It would have been a difficult life living in these turf huts in the long harsh winters.

Another image taken a couple of weeks ago when visiting How Hill. I have finally got my iMac back from Apple with a shiny new LCD screen. It's good to be back processing in Lightroom rather than on mobile apps.

This and many others were at the Banksy (second I think) London exhibition, Turf War, held at a warehouse on Kingsland Road, a few years back. He's repeated the diving helmet theme on a number of graffs most noteably the artwork for the last Blur Think Tank album. Painted on to cardboard.

There are so many new families in the nests this year in such close proximity to each other in the nesting areas of the rookery, so many different species that there are bound to be spats. This one lasted for about ten minutes. It's hard to say who was too close to who as the Great Egrets and the Anhingas chose to raise their families in the same general area, but this Anhinga male knows that the Great Egrets are notorious for grabbing chicks out of the nest, so it lets the egret know in no uncertain terms to stay back as it protects its family. Videoed at Elgin Park, Surrey, British Columbia, CA by my son, David.

I was taking some fairly long distance shots of this heron preening on a dead tree about 30-40 feet away when another heron came out of nowhere and barrel rolled him off the branch he was perched on. They fell to the ground about 20 feet away and started going at it. This video began about 5 seconds into the fight (love that instant video button!). After chasing the other heron to the Yukon, ;) he returned for a nice relaxing fishing session. When I refer to 'this' heron, I mean the defender who was also the victor in this fight!

There are many turfed churches in Iceland. This one was next to the house we were staying in a hamlet just off highway 1, near Skaftafell national park.

Neon sign for Rodeway Inn & Suites, 741 E Washington Street in Charles Town, West Virginia. This establishment was once known as the "Turf Motel". I like the dramatic red arrow directing travelers off the road.

Those who want to get a feel for old Iceland would do well to visit Keldur, probably the oldest house in Iceland. The house was lived in continuously from the 10th Century to the mid-20th Century. Still, it is not quite possible to say that this is a 1000 year old house, as turf-and-sod houses have to be continuously renovated and rebuilt, so different parts are from different times. Even the stones have had to be rearranged at times, after earthquakes, but the hall of the farm is clearly the oldest in the country.

Keldur is a farm and a church site in S-Iceland. Where the old farm still stands in the shelter of the edge of the lava field, big cold springs, called Keldur, feed a stream. The areas north of Keldur are almost totally barren, sanded lava areas, where there were fertile areas and prosperous farms in the past. The ruins of 18 farmsteads have been discovered within the area, victims of soil erosion.

During the first decades of the 20th century, the occupants of Keldur fought the devastating advance of travelling dunes and sandstorms rather successfully. The remaining defense constructions show great ingenuity. Today, much effort is made to stop and reverse soil erosion in Iceland, which is the worst in Europe.

According to the Njal's Saga, the farmer Ingjaldur Holskuldsson occupied Keldur around the year 1000. Later the most powerful dynasty of the country, the so-called Oddaverjar, had one of their manors there.

A few years before the turn of the last century the houses of the old farm were repaired and renovated and archaeologist carried out excavations discovered new facts about a secret sub terrain walk from the farm down to the stream. A plausible theory is that it was built by Ingjaldur as an escape route. He had reason to fear attacks, as he refused to join the coalition against Njall, making him some powerful enemies.

I got to witness something a bit unusual yesterday. For almost two hours there was no activity at the Osprey nest, just a lone Osprey sitting in a nearby tree. A few eagles and heron did close flybys to keep me entertained, but I resigned myself to realize that I might walk away without many photos. Then, while I wasn’t paying attention a lone Osprey landed on the nest. I focused on the bird to take a couple of shots, when several other Ospreys flew in and battled over the nest. I never knew that they had turf wars!

It wasn’t a long or bloody battle, and the two successfully defended the nest and stood on alert until after I left. I managed a few good shots, but would have done things differently had I know what was to take place.

I am working on a new website for all of my Toy Car Project shots:

Another shot of the two tooned cars I picked up the other day. The one in the front is a woody style wagon, called Surf 'N Turf. The VW Beetle is also in the tooned style, which I'll post next.

Cheers,

Wade

My 5th trip to this location and I have finally got a shot that will stop me having to return!

After looking at a rather promising weather report, it was all systems go!

Mind you, I don't think I have ever seen so many photographers at one location in one go!! I counted twelve, and to the lovely chap who asked what everyone was waiting for.... the answer would be for the sun to do this. Quite a stunning sunset tonight :)

Centuries before ‘going green’ became fashionable, Icelanders were constructing eco-friendly and energy efficient houses.
