DeRobigne Mortimer Bennett, a freethinker and founder of The Truth Seeker, was sentenced to 13 months in prison in 1879 at the age of 60 for violating the Comstock laws by distributing a supposedly obscene essay entitled Cupid's Yokes, a 23-page, densely worded, heavily footnoted argument against the institution of marriage. Anthony Comstock, the crusading postal inspector and head of the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice, personally collected the evidence for Bennett's conviction, ordering the essay from him by mail along with some other publications.

If it seems shocking that such an essay was labeled obscene and that distributing it could have landed you in prison in the United States just 135 years ago, keep in mind that our modern ideas of free speech still needed another 80 years to really take root; it was only a 1959 lawsuit over the Post Office's confiscation of uncensored copies of Lady Chatterley's Lover that, "in effect, marked the end of the Post Office's authority — which, until then, it held absolutely — to declare a work of literature 'obscene' or to impound copies of those works or prosecute their publishers . . . [and] established the principle that allowed free speech its total victory."

I found an NY Times article from 1883 reporting that Bennett's friends wanted to install the monument you see above here at Green-Wood, adorned with quotations from some of his writings. The Times's (or at least the author's) disdain for Bennett's countercultural views is glaringly obvious: the article describes him as a semi-literate buffoon "addicted to obscenity" whose defining thought on religion, amidst the "blasphemous and indecent rubbish that he wrote in his life-time", was "There ain't no God". Bennett's own words, however, paint a much different picture. Engraved in the monument above (though not visible in this photo), for example, are the following lines:

I believe in the eternal powers and principles of nature, in the superiority of good lives, in acts of kindness toward our fellow-beings, and in efforts to spread the light of truth over the dark spots of the earth. Each person must be responsible for the good or ill he does. Here is our duty, here is our allegiance, and not in the sky above us. We must make our heaven on the earth, and not in the air.

Aaaaand I forgot to take a photo! The is literally the only thing in my storage for today - a test edit for one of my photos from the shoot on saturday. I'm so mad cuz I was only messing around to see if what I wanted to do was possible, it's not even a good edit!!! D:

It was literally a test run to seeing I could make holes in my picture, then layer it over another picture so the background comes through, and then I was messing with the blue settings to see if they'd do anything (sort of but imma have to tone it down and make it more pin point).

Technically it was successful cuz it did what I wanted but this looks nothing like how I want the final edit to look.

Anyyywaaayy, anyone watched Truthseekers? This is my Astrid cosplay! XD

This newest by Xiamara has more spikes than a porcupine! The whole outfit came out of Xia (as usual) grabbing an opportunity to get up my nose: I was mouthing off to Bettina Tizzy about how I loathed brown to the extent where I did not even have a single brown garment in my RL closet, when she turned around and made this: A brown as brown can be outfit for men and women!

The garment takes its somewhat high falutin' name from the fact that all the textural elements used are art nouveau/seccesionist ornaments. And Xia insists that this is a floral outfit and I have to say that I can not disagree with her. Who said flowers were these cute little innocent things anyway? They can be soooo spikey...

Heartfelt thanks go to Truthseeker Young who gave us a set of amazing prim attachments which we have agreed to put to good use in a collaborative project in the near future. However, Xiamara could not resist utilizing the belt for this garment as well.

NatWest bank has frozen the accounts of state-run broadcaster Russia Today (RT), its editor-in-chief says.

Margarita Simonyan tweeted: “They’ve closed our accounts in Britain. All our accounts. ‘The decision is not subject to review.’ Praise be to freedom of speech!”

RT says the bank gave no explanation for its decision.

It said the entire Royal Bank of Scotland Group, of which NatWest is part, was refusing to service RT.

The broadcaster says NatWest wrote to its London office, saying: “We have recently undertaken a review of your banking arrangements with us and reached the conclusion that we will no longer provide these facilities.”

Ofcom backs BBC in Russian TV case

He added that in order to “keep the pressure up”, further sanctions against the Syrian regime “and their supporters” would be considered.

RT, which is run by the Kremlin, has previously been sanctioned by Ofcom for biased reporting.

This included claims that the BBC “staged” a chemical weapons attack for a news report on Syria.

The BBC won a case against the TV channel after complaining to Ofcom, saying the allegations made in a programme called The Truthseeker were false and struck “at the heart” of its obligations to accuracy and impartiality.

Ofcom ruled that elements of the programme were “materially misleading”.
