ABOUT BETTER BROTHERS LOS ANGELES

Better Brothers Los Angeles was created to provide spaces for Black gay men to network, socialize and be BETTER – at life, love and community. Developing a sense of community has been a challenge for some Black gay men, given the cultural and religious opposition to their sexual orientation. As those challenges have receded in mainstream society, they still present significant difficulties and constrain a sense of well-being for Black gay men within the Black community. Better Brothers Los Angeles has sponsored cultural, recreational, and social/networking events, and continues to create a community where Black gay men and women can walk with a greater sense of confidence and pride. ABOUT THE DIVA FOUNDATION

The DIVA Foundation -- founded in 1990 by Tony-nominated actress and HIV/AIDS advocate Sheryl Lee Ralph -- is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, created as a living memorial to the many friends she lost to HIV/AIDS as an original cast member of the Broadway musical “Dreamgirls,” and because of her concern for the threat HIV/AIDS posed to women and children. Over the years, the DIVA Foundation has worked to break the silence and erase the stigma still connected to HIV/AIDS and encourage people to get tested in order to know their HIV status.

Truth, Truth Aquatics, out of Santa Barbara

While out doing some photography on a fine autumn morning, I crossed paths with Julius and a new face. Julius and I embraced a firm handshake and hug, as his friend looked at us with bewilderment. As fate may have it, I was carrying my collage of strangers I put together back in the spring for a gallery event. Julius had only ever seen the image on my tiny phone screen, so the honor was bestowed upon him to take a look at the image. As he pointed at several faces he knew in print, his friend looked at me and asked "why am I not included?" Smiling back at him, I knew this was the opportunity for a new member of the "A HREF="https://www.flickr.com/photos/redskyrocketman/sets/72157645750435863/">(608)strangers so I ran with it. "Obviously because I haven't taken your picture yet!" I exclaimed with a hint of laughter in my voice, and thus the man introduced himself as Cory better known to his friends as "Truth." He asked how I wanted him to pose, and as with my strangers I told him "just be you!" He promptly stood up straight, with good posture and looked at the lens. I clicked off a few frames and was content.

I shared the frames with him and he applauded my efforts and gave the thumbs up for inclusion in the project. The 100 strangers group has plenty of followers who just enjoy the photography, I for one am a member to enjoy the write-ups too When I meet people with not much of a backstory, I think of it not as a missed opportunity but rather a new friend. I suggest trying the project out, as in my mind there is no grounds for failure if you go in with open arms and open eyes!

With a name like Truth or Consequences, I had to visit. From what I could see, it was just another older western town strung along the interstate. It had renamed itself after a radio show, so that the radio show would broadcast from there once every year.

From "T or C" my plan was to get to Alamogordo and see the White Sands area. This required going south on I-25 through a number of small towns to Las Cruces (which turned out to be much less interesting than I expected), and then east on US-70 across the White Sands Missile Range (next picture).

A quote from the pastor where he asked if we needed to defend the truth or if it was our interpretation that needed defended. That whole message inspired me to create this little graphic.

This is the symbol for the new truth campaign, thats mission is to teach teens about gods life and save our generation from a life of hell.

The women known as Sojourner Truth, born in bondage, would become one of the most powerful advocates for human rights in the nineteenth century. At the 1851 Women’s Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio, Truth delivered what is recognized as one of the most famous abolitionist and women’s rights speeches in American history, “Ain’t I a Woman?”

My baby's got a heart of stone

can't you people just leave her alone

she never did nothing to hurt you

so just leave her alone

The motion of her tiny hands

and the quiver of her bones below

are the signs of a girl alone

and tell you everything

you need to know

I can't explain it

I feel it often

everytime I see her face

but the way you treat her

fills me with rage and I

want to tear apart the place

You try to tell her what to do

and all she does is stare at you

her stare is louder than your voice

because truth doesn't make a noise
