For many businesses, Quickbooks is what runs the vast majority of their accounting and payroll systems. Yet, for many, the nature of Quickbooks’ multi-user system is somewhat mystical. The challenge is always to provide reliable access to database resources, but what do you do if that doesn’t work? Intuit offers some direction on this topic, but not nearly as much as many would like. We’ve had some experience with these issues over the years and thought it would be a good time to go over the best ways to work with QuickBooks in multi-user mode.
First and foremost, you need to decide what computer will be hosting the QuickBooks database file (usually a .QBW file). If you’re just beginning to use multi-user access or are having problems, the key is to define the computer you want to be your server. This computer would ideally be a Windows machine that stays on all the time and is not regularly operated by a user. While there is a way to share files that uses different computers, it’s best that you choose one machine and make it the server.
Once that’s decided, you’ll perform the standard file sharing and mapping processes from client computer or install an Active Directory. That stuff is beyond the scope of this article, but you’re having trouble with QuickBooks in multi-user mode, then all of that has likely been done.
Setup scanning and monitoring on the server
Included with all versions of QuickBooks is the QuickBooks Database Server – this needs to bee installed on your chosen server computer (you’ll find it on the QuickBooks CD). Also in this package is the Database Manager tool. The Manager needs to be configured for monitoring the correct locations on the server. Be sure to add the directory where the database (.QBW) files are located and that the monitored drives are correctly checked off. It’s not entirely clear what settings, if any, the scanning process acts on – but it appears as though the QuickBooks Database Server needs to know where the database files are located, and this tool does that.

Make sure services are clean
Installing and upgrading various versions of the QuickBooks Database Server tends to create new services, but we also found that the installation process does not remove older services. Be sure to run “services.msc” on your server and have only a single (newest) service of QuickBooksDB## and QBCFMonitorService. If needed, the AutoRuns tool from Sysinternals can be used to delete un-needed service versions. In addition, make sure that you only install the QuickBooks Database Server (not the full QuickBooks application).

What services need to be running?
As shown in the picture above, only the QBCMonitorService and QuickBooksDB## services need to be running for your database server to operate normally. You do not need the entire QuickBooks Application installed or loaded, only the database server.
What ports need to be open?
Many of the connection issues you’ll see are likely due to ports not being accessible, open or correctly configured. If you have checked that all of your services are clean and correctly running, you should next make sure that either (1) the server’s firewall has the required ports open or (2) is just disabled altogether (disabling this is is a good quick way to rule out firewall problems). QuickBooks has a full rundown online of all the ports required for each version of QuickBooks.

That big list is messy, but in most small environments ports 8019, 56722, and 55348 through 55352 need to be open-able on your server. You can find out what programs use what ports on your server by using the free CurrPorts tool from Nirsoft. You’ll also want to make sure you know what firewall software is installed on the server and either configure or disable it.
What is the “Alternate Setup?”
In our experience, the Alternate Setup tends to cause the most confusion. Using this option makes QuickBooks multi-user capable but turns the first computer to open the file into a server. If you stop and think, you might see how this could make for a very frustrating environment. You may not know which computer has become a serve, or the firewall may be mis-configured on that computer blocking all access. It’s generally not a good to use Alternate Setup unless you absolutely do not have a computer that is on always on that can be a server.
Use the Connection Diagnostic Tool
Intuit also offers a tool called the QuickBooks Connection Diagnostic Tool (download here). In cases where you’re comfortable that the server is setup right, but can’t tell if the clients are connecting correctly – Using this tool (as well as other basic tools like ping), will tell you if a client computer can open your QuickBooks database in multi-user mode. We’ve even seen scenarios where local client firewalls were restricting access from the client to the server, so using a tool like this may help you find and correct those sorts of issues.
How will I know it’s working?
There are a few ways you can tell you’ve successfully configured this. First, from the client computer’s installation of QuickBooks, you’ll be able to click on File -> Enter Muti-User Mode and not see any errors. The newest versions of QuickBooks we’ve seen are set to notify when another user logs in – this is another sign that things are on the right track. To know that your chosen server is doing the work, log into it and run the QuickBooks Database Server Manager, click on the “Database Server” tab and the “Refresh List” button. What you should see is a listing of open database files and connected users (listed as: User1, User2, User3).

What versions of Windows work with the Database Server?
We’ve seen, installed and tested the QuickBooks Database Server on Windows XP, Windows 7 (x86/x64), Windows Server 2003 (x86/x64), and Windows Server 2008 (x86/x64).

Trying to get this thing running. I only get to use spare parts, and I don't know if anything is use works or not. Much fun! Well, I started with beep codes. I had to track down the manual for the motherboard online, and decipher the beeps. I managed to finally find good memory sticks, got passed the beep codes, but no video. I tried many things, and nothing is working. I'm in a video black hole of some kind. Maybe I'll have this running tomorrow.
Say hello to my little friend. Yesterday morning my Surface Pro bricked itself ... wouldn't turn on and no amount of troubleshooting could revive it. Was it the usual Microsoft Tuesday update? I have no idea. My Surface has had battery problems and waking from sleep problems, and they finally became fatal. It is only 10 months old but it is completely nonfunctional now. Had a hankering for a cup of joe and a donut one night after troubleshooting a server outage... turns out not every Dunkies is a 24 hour establishment. Shame, but I did spare myself 500 extra calories.
I got to vacuum my foyer area when kaplooey! my vacuum just stopped working. I've followed the troubleshooting instructions in the guide. Nothing worked. It's not working.
I don't need to have to need a new vacuum right about now. I just don't!
But instead of getting stressed out and worked up I took the dogs over to the dog park again and let them run. Then I came back, opened up my bottle of Coke imported from Mexico and kicked up my feet.
I didn't lose a vacuum. I gained a foot rest.

Gracie is in a better mood than her humans were after unsuccessfully troubleshooting a wonky internet connection all afternoon (hence the Hipstamatic iPhone shot this week).
It was a creature of instinct. Is such a thing deserving of our horror or pity?
At the beginning of the month I transformed my sister into this Angler-fish-humanoid. The costume was designed to have the look of a transparent skin with skeletal elements jutting out. My husband assisted with the wiring components for the lit up chest-piece and dangle light. The wig was custom dyed and has the dangle light anchored to it (thank you to the wonderful ladies in the UB costume shop for troubleshooting with me!). My mother assisted in getting Laryssa into character on location. And of course, Laryssa was a such a wonderful muse and took on the uncomfortable and unflattering task of becoming this character.
Shoots like this take an incredible amount of time to prep and I'm thankful to everyone who helped in the process.

Clem is pretty mad at me for not posting his picture on Thursday....but our Internet wasn't working and Mister wasn't home to figure out what was wrong and my limited troubleshooting didn't help. So we have a Clem Saturday with clem blending into the dining room wall. Hope you have a wonderful Saturday!
Last year we struggled a lot with troubleshooting our irrigation system, and our fall carrot crop was a complete loss because we couldn't keep the soil moist enough while the seeds were germinating. It was very, very discouraging.

Previously I whined about SSIL that didn't work and I didn't know how to make it works, why it happened only to me was unknown until today..
Here what I discovered:
if you start the game with ambientocclusion=false, and then you activate it through GUI of Toggler you will only see SSAO work, but not SSIL.
You basically have to restart the game with ambientocclusion on "true" to see either SSAO and SSIL. Or at least this is what was wrong with my configuration.
I have to thank jay and its Goddess ENB to make me discover this mistery, since I forgot to set ambientocclusion to false and I found out testing its config and its values :)
P.S Reandor as a follower, I made a compilation with most of my characters as followers.. the only thing is I forgot to give them some perks :facepalm:

Under The Hood...
Beneath the user-friendly world of the keyboard, monitor and mouse lies and often hidden world of wonder and beauty... the heart of the machine. Although I built my current rig a number of years ago, it still runs smoothly and without issue given a healthy maintenance and backup schedule. Whilst some will tinker under the hood of their vehicle, changing fluids, checking connections and pressures, replacing belts and plugs, this holds no interest for me... my computer is my everything... it keeps me connected to the world.
Thought it's interface I live a good chunk of my life... my photography comes to life through the digital darkroom... entertainment from movies and music... education through YouTube and photography blogs... friendship through Flickr and Skype... shopping for sundries and big-ticket items... tedium with bill-payment and troubleshooting... it is often near the centre of my universe be it work or play... and as such keeping it running in good order is as important to me as my other activities that together form a balanced lifestyle.
This is a picture of the evaporator coil, defrost heating element, drip pan and drain hole located behind the freezer's plastic false wall. It turns out that the defrost drain pipe was clogged with ice and debris.

It seems that whilst I had taken to my bed with a cold, the media server at home had died.
This holds the storage array with all the media on it, and so it's bad if it dies.
The machine is a Fujitsu Primergy TX150 from 2009, so it's got a few miles on the clock but has given sterling service so far. Alas, it's rather unresponsive.
Helpfully, the motherboard has a boatload of diagnostic LEDs showing which components are faulty. Unhelpfully, none of them are lit. :/
Helpfully again, one of the blinking green lights showing something alive is the "iRMC". This is a brilliantly helpful integrated remote management console.
This is basically a web server that allows to remote in for all kinds of diagnostic information about the machine. HP use a similar technology called 'iLO' but this is Fujitsu's version and it's great.
The machine won't even boot as far as the BIOS, but I can still see the error log. It's showing me too errors, one major and one critical. The major one is that PSU is only providing standy voltage during the power on sequence and the critical one is that the temperature sensor on the CPU is showing an overheat.
Given that the machine won't run, and the ambient is 12 degrees, I'm guessing the CPU overheat is spuriously generated by the power failure. I think it might be time to start shopping for a PSU. Fujitsu pulled support on this product last summer. Let the games begin. :)

1. the cannon is much too fragile with this "one stud" connection. i need to find a better sturdier solution.
2. I love the idea of a tandem seating, but as www.flickr.com/photos/78224984@N00/ magnus_lauglo pointed out, the commander's turret in the rear sticks out and enhances the overall silhouette.
I tried to lower the rear turret, but I was only able to decrease the height about one plate.
3. To have a greater gun depression I modified the front track section but now there is an ugly gap, which looks troublesome. The gun elevation is ok in my book (It's not a howitzer).
Meanwhile, I'm much happier with the driver's cabin and the foldable hatch with integrated optics.
