This group of dwellings on 138 and 139 Sts, between Frederick Douglass and Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Blvds, earned its current name because of the hard-working individuals who sought to live in them. New York building contractor David H. King, a prominent individual in the construction of the Statue of Liberty, hired four different architects to design the three rows of 1890s brownstones: McKim, Mead and White; James Lord Brown; Bruce Price; and Clarence S. Elsie was the mascot of the former Borden dairy products company. She appeared at the 1939 and 1964 World’s Fairs, both held at what is now Flushing Meadows Corona Park, where she is still honored today. Her mate Elmer is the mascot of the glue by that name. I hadn't seen one of these in many years.
It works like this... The traveler selects his destination for the day on the left. If it isn't too remote, there's a reasonable chance it will be listed here, and the mileage and routes to drive appear to the right.
With the ability to use cell phones and GPS units for routing & traffic updates, this thing is obsolete... but I still enjoyed seeing it.

When Brooklyn lawyer and developer Edwin Clark Litchfield hired architect A.J. Davis to build his Italianate villa in 1857, his property spanned a large portion of the Prospect Park and west to the Gowanus Canal. No, this isn’t Savannah, Georgia. William Astor financed and architect Charles Buek designed these 28 semi-attached row houses that were built on the south side of 130 St between 5 and Lenox Avs between 1880 and 1883. Not only were they among the first townhouses built in Harlem, they featured a detail not ordinarily seen in New York City homes – front porches.
