And so here we are; the last day of the holiday, and all of Tokyo to explore and snap. And we don't have a scooby where to go. We had thought about it, looked on line, and 2nd on Tripadvisor was Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. And as we enjoyed the gardens at the Imperial Palace, we thought this might be a good idea.

We went down for breakfast at 07:10, and found the restaurant in the middle of the lobby packed, but somehow I managed to get a table for us. And seeing as this was more of an international place, breakfast had more of a European feel. The freshly baked rolls looked nice, still warm from baking, so I thought one would be fine with marmalade on. I cut it open only to find it part filled with blue cheese; and I wanted to have marmalade! Oh, what the heck, lets mix flavours, and it came out as being tasty!

We got our stuff together, ready to brave the madness of the Metro for the first time in 10 days, our route planned; we set off.

Up to now we had seen subway trains with just standing room available, but this was the first time we had seen a train pull in with there no space whatsoever to get on. Some locals did push on, and we saw their faces as the train pulled out. Thankfully, the next one was less full, and we did get one for the few stops before we had to change again.

We arrived at the station near the garden, and the security guard saw us looking at a map and told us to cross the road on street level and then turn right.

Which is what we did, along a shaded promenade walk to the main gate of the park, which only charged 200 Yen to get in. The walks were well signposted, and as we just wanted to see the Japanese garden, we set off through the woods for it. Also in the park were dozens of school parties, all very young children, who had come for some nature-based activities and then a packed lunch.

I suppose what we had hoped for was something akin to the garden at the Imperial Palace, with flowers, insects and ponds. But here there was a pond or two, bridges and paths leading through them, but it lacked the wow factor of the Imperial Palace, and out of blossom season is "just a park". I say that as there isn't a lot of green spaces in downtown Tokyo, but this gives a chance to escape the crowds and have some quiet time, walking through garden or over the grass, maybe have a picnic.

We pause for a cool drink from a vending machine and an ice cream from the small shop.

It was darn hot, so darned hot that by half eleven, we decided not to go to the English garden, which might have been the wrong decision, but then again, it was our holiday, so we get to do what we want.

I was trying to write my blogs out before we left, or at least get the first week written before we left, so I said I would like to spend some time in the hotel with the view, radio and air conditioning, writing. Jen said she would like to do some last minute shopping and Jools wanted to go back to Beadtown. So it was set, we took the metro back, then walked via a huge subway past shops and yet more vending machines until we came to the correct exit for the hotel.

The afternoon slipped past, I wrote, Jools and Jen shopped. I was writing away when I heard a noise at the window, only to see two blokes cleaning the window via a gondolier. They didn't notice me, and within 15 seconds had moved on to another floor. Just enough time to rattle off a shot or two of them!

Jools came back at something like four, and I needed a drink, so we go down to reception and in the same bar where I had drunk the whisky the night before, they presented me with the cocktail menu. I had always though that Jools would like a White Russian, so I order two, happy that if she didn't like it, I would be able to finish it. Which is what happened. We sat in the bar, chatting to the manager about Tokyo, visitors and the difference between Americans and Brits, and that we may speak the same language but we rarely mean the same thing! He smiled.

Reflected in the building opposite were the colours of sunset. We went round to the other side of the lobby to look and were treated to a wonderful site; the sky was all oranges and reds with the city beginning to light up, and the iconic Tokyo Tower centre. But best of all, on the horizon, poking through some thin clouds was the silhouette of Mt Fuji.

Jen came down, and we went hunting for dinner. Or somewhere to have it at least. Down in the subway, we saw an ad for "sky high dining", eating whilst looking at the city far below sounded wonderful, so went up.

In a place named after Oregon State, we were given a table right by the picture window, with views to a railway station surrounded by skyscrapers. It was perfect. Instead of shabu-shabu, which what had been planned, we had steak, and wine. It was glorious, a fine end to the holiday, the city laid out for our enjoyment before us.

It has to come to an end of course, and this now had, the final curtain rushed towards us just as we were getting used to Japan.

There's always next time I suppose.

Tuesday 29 October 2013: Kalaw (ကလောမြု့) - Pindaya Caves (ပင်းတယရွှေဥမင်) - Nyaung Shwe (ညောင်ရွှေမြို့)

Awake early, to clear skies which made for some lovely final photos of Kalaw - Aung Chan Tha zedi (the mirror mosaic pagoda) and (again from the Winner Hotel's rooftop restaurant) the alms collecting monks returning to Thein Taung Paya monastery.

Bidding farewell to Kalaw, we boarded our bling bus and drove through the colourful Shan State (ရှမ်းပြည်နယ်) countryside to the Pindaya Caves. I'd taken "We venture into the labyrinth of tunnels with our guide to gain a better insight into its history" to mean we'd have a guided tour of the caverns, chambers and tunnels which house over 8,000 images of Buddha.... instead we were left to our own devices to explore the limestone caverns for an hour. Stunning - but I would have liked some explanation. Yet again, I regretted not bringing a guidebook.

Lunch at the Green Tea Restaurant - a lovely lakeside setting and set up, but catering solely for large western tour groups - then looping back through the fields and hills (I became a tad obsessed with getting a snap of the beautifully stacked cabbages and the wooden horse and carts collecting them) towards Nyaung Shwe, our Inle Lake (အင်းလေးကန်) base for the next few days.

We had a couple of stops en route: a viewpoint over the valley where the Myanmar Railway line loops back on itself (which apparently inspires poets), and at the fascinating Nan Cherry Bamboo Umbrella and Shan Paper shop near Heho (ဟဲဟိုး) where we got to see a family producing hand made petal decorated paper and traditional bamboo umbrellas. On the final approach to Nyaung Shwe we had some time to photograph the beautiful teak monastery of Shwe Yan Pyae.

Our home in Nyaung Shwe was the Hu Pin hotel, which provided a compact, simple but bijoux twin bed room and - most importantly - laundry facilities. The Explore and Exodus groups were staying here too - we overlapped with them both at various times on our trip. The lovely ladies on reception provided a map of the town, and Anna, Miriam, Joelle and I headed out to explore, visiting the Yadana Man Aung Paya as dusk fell.

For dinner, Anna, Miriam and I followed up on one of the suggested restaurants in Miriam's guide book rather than going for pizza with Josh and the rest of the group. The Aurora proved a winner: family run, local food and plenty of it. Wonderful. If you're ever in Nyaung Shwe, eat there.

I think one of the pleasures of staying in an international place like this hotel, as what people from different countries have for breakfast, and the hotel has to cater for most of them, as all would be impossible I suppose. Most people seem to think coffee is an important part of breakfast, and they would be right of course.

We got our stuff together, ready to brave the madness of the Metro for the first time in 10 days, our route planned; we set off.

Up to now we had seen subway trains with just standing room available, but this was the first time we had seen a train pull in with there no space whatsoever to get on. Some locals did push on, and we saw their faces squashed against the door's windows as the train pulled out. But best of all, on the horizon, poking through some thin clouds was the silhouette of Mt Fuji. And that, seeing the volcano on the very last sunset of the trip, we had crossed the last thing to see off the list. And what a fine end to the holiday. But not quite the end, as there was dinner to seek out.

Jen came down, and we went hunting for dinner. Or somewhere to have it at least. We had in mind more shabu-shabu, and we were sure that we could find somewhere serving that near to the hotel. But then Tokyo seems to be the most people unfriendly place on earth, at least at first. It is all so bewildering, passages and stairways leading in all directions.

We wandered aimlessly, pointing out places that clearly were selling food. But not looking too special, and we felt that the last night should be special.

Down in the subway, we saw an ad for "sky high dining"; eating whilst looking at the city far below sounded wonderful, so went up.

Maybe not the best nor cheapest steak in the world, or the city. But with views like that, it hardly mattered.

It has to come to an end of course, and this now had, the final curtain rushed towards us just as we were getting used to Japan. But, we came, saw and enjoyed ourselves. But I yearned to go home, see the cats, have some tea, and just be home in our little piece of England.

There's always next time I suppose.

And so here we are; the last day of the holiday, and all of Tokyo to explore and snap. And we don't have a scooby where to go. We had thought about it, looked on line, and 2nd most popular attraction on Tripadvisor was Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden.

I was trying to write my blogs out before we left, or at least get the first week written before we left, so I said I would like to spend some time in the hotel with the view, radio and air conditioning on, writing.

Always have a camera handy!

“My family's Home away from Home for 15 years”

5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 days ago on Tripadvisor.com

"My wife and I have been using the CentrePoint Chidlom for almost 15 years -- from when it was still known as "CentrePoint Langsuan." At first, we put our friends and colleagues who visited us from abroad there, but after we moved from Thailand, we started using the hotel. We've tried other hotels several times, but we ended up always moving to the CentrePoint Chidlom every time. For the price range, no other hotel can beat the service, amenities, and comfort provided by the CentrePoint Chidlom. Even the five star Bangkok hotels we've used (even the one used for a POTUS visit) did not match up for us because we found that their staff was not as friendly as the staff at the CentrePoint Chidlom.

I've noticed that some of the less than satisfactory reviews by other people here on tripadvisor could be associated with miss-communication and incorrect expectations. My wife and I have always made it clear our needs to the hotel's sales office before we book, and we've never been shy about complaining about every little "nit-noi" problem we find to the staff, and in every case, the hotel staff always go out of their way to provide us with what we need or what we've requested.

The hotel's location is a good balance between convenience and calmness in my opinion. The hotel is located about midway into a relatively quiet road -- it is about a 15 minutes' walk to the large Lumpini Park where you can see elderly people practicing tai chi in the morning. It is a 10-minutes' walk to the closest "sky train" (BTS) station -- or you can take the free hotel tuk-tuk to go between the sky train station and the hotel. There are several good restaurants just a few minutes' walk from the hotel, yet the street is not as busy as "Sukhumvit" or one of the other heavily-crowded roads.

The breakfast at the hotel is just perfect in my opinion. I grew up in an Asian home (neither Thai nor Chinese), and I really appreciate the hotel serving what I would consider to be "Asian comfort food" that the CentrePoint makes available at breakfast every morning. This is in addition to typical western breakfast food (sausage, bacon, made-to-order eggs or omelette and milk-and-cereal) -- but whereas most other high-end hotels in the area might serve ONLY the western artery-clogging food, the CentrePoint takes into consideration its Asian (and Asian-American) guests as well. (My little six-year-old son appreciated being able to get his misso soup every morning for breakfast.)

Although the hotel has been at its current location for a long time, it has done a great job maintaining and keeping its facilities up-to-date. The covered (but still open to the air) pool is a lot more relaxing and child-friendly now than it has ever been. The hotel lobby and library are very relaxing places to just sit and watch people or to read. Even the golf putting green they've installed is very well done and makes the stay at the hotel that much more comfortable. The rooms have been updated with comfortable furnishings and amenities. (The two-bedroom apartment we stayed in had 3 modern LCD TVs, comfortable king-sized beds with memory-foam pillows, fast internet -- and a toilet that cleans your rear end for you!!!!) Our apartment was both comfortable and quiet. The housekeeping staff were very quiet; they were able to keep our rooms immaculate, yet we never hear them working in any of the other rooms on our floor.

As much as we love the amenities and the rooms at the CentrePoint Chidlom, the biggest reason why my wife and I (and now with our children) have always returned to the CentrePoint Chidlom is the customer service. My job of close to 30 years puts me on the road quite a bit. I've stayed at hotels of all levels of service and of a wide range of prices all over the world -- from hostel-like places in South America to bed-and-breakfasts in England and continental Europe to resorts in Las Vegas to five star hotels in India, Japan and almost a hundred other countries. The friendliness and service that the staff at the CentrePoint Chidlom gives to me and my family every time we've stayed with them surpasses that of any other hotel I've ever used. (Again, I do think that communication is important if you want great service: The hotel caters to people of different cultures from all over the world, and for the most part, they've done a great job at anticipating their guests' general needs. However, they've also been able to go beyond what we've expected from other hotels whenever my wife and I have asked.)

Our last stay at the CentrePoint Chidlom was for a 2-week vacation that started in early July. As our van drove up to the hotel, my wife and I turned to each other and then we said to our kids: "We're home!" -- The hotel staff did not disappoint us."

we are happy that slowly clients are willing to take their time to share safari experience with future travellers. bit.ly/15ZkaMr

“Top Value Riad”

This was my 3rd visit to Marrakech and I have previously stayed in lower rated accommodation but as we were staying for 4 nights we decided to pay a little more and I saw the reviews of Dar najat on Tripadvisor - all the previous reviewers were very complimentary and they were very right - this is definitely a great place to stay.

Most importantly is the friendly welcome you get from Olivier a French men who own and run the place. He is really friendly and helpful and has some great staff working With him . It really was a happy place to stay, which is nice.

Rooms - the Riad has 7 rooms and we had one of their smaller rooms with ensuite facilities but it was very tastefully decorated, it had hanging space and the bathroom always had hot water. We didn't spend much time in the room because the Riad has a lovely shaded terrace and lots of other areas where you can just chill out and get away from the hustle and bustle of Marrakech.

Location - it is just 5 mn from the Cafe de France in the main square Jama l fnaa so is perfectly located although it does take a little time to find the first time as the Medina is full of alleyways but after first time we had no problems finding it again.

Help & Advice - although we had previously visited Marrakech we got some great advice and recommendations from Olivier of places to eat and visit. All his suggestions were spot on. We also got him to organise a private excursion to the Ourika Valley which was very good. We could have done it cheaper by joining a group mini bus excursion but the driver Christophe arranged spoke great english and was very friendly and made it a great trip - many thanks to Adou our driver & guide for a great day.

Marrakech is either a place you love or hate - like most places in the Muslim world you get woken early by the call to prayer and some of the streets in the old city are dirty and grubby and you always get people trying to sell you stuff in the souks but Marrakech is a magical place and when we go back again we will be staying at Dar najat as it is a very welcoming and friendly place –

Internacional (+52) 998 883 1985.

And so here we are; the last day of the holiday, and all of Tokyo to explore and snap. And we don't have a scooby where to go. We had thought about it, looked on line, and 2nd most popular attraction on Tripadvisor was Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden.

I was trying to write my blogs out before we left, or at least get the first week written before we left, so I said I would like to spend some time in the hotel with the view, radio and air conditioning on, writing.

Always have a camera handy!

I was trying to write my blogs out before we left, or at least get the first week written before we left, so I said I would like to spend some time in the hotel with the view, radio and air conditioning on, writing.

Always have a camera handy!

I was trying to write my blogs out before we left, or at least get the first week written before we left, so I said I would like to spend some time in the hotel with the view, radio and air conditioning on, writing.

Always have a camera handy!

Figured I'd take a pic for the TripAdvisor review.

Below is the full TripAdvisor review:

------------

Stayed at this hotel for the Washington Coalition for Open Government 2012 conference up the block on night of March 9-10. Arranged for my stay a few months before so I could get best available rate. Was able to check in at 10 am and take my bag up, declined to accept a $100 hold on my debit card though simply because I wanted in-room WiFi. Found the suite great with a nice desk strong enough to take my 30lb bag + big enough to let me clutter, a nice sofa, a refrigerator, complimentary coffee, a closet and a very comfortable bed. Not to mention a great view and an even better job done by housekeeping.

Also very nice to have the business center to check on e-mail & Facebook on the fourth floor. I was the only person using the already-paid for internet though at 4:30 PM and then 10:30 PM for two half-hour sojourns on a Friday night, though. Felt very safe inside the hotel, what with the elevators across from the front desk.

Do appreciate that the hotel is three blocks downhill along Seneca Street and then on 3rd Avenue is a staircase to the light rail. Only a bit longer walk to the waterfront & the ferries.

I did take a few pictures of the suite. Hopefully shows the good work by housekeeping.

Finally, I'd recommend the hotel for anybody NOT on a tight budget... very comfortable AND QUIET place. Couldn't hear anybody else nor the elevator from my suite during my stay.
