I love the flaky texture of this tree, it's like it's shedding scales

Toward the end of Section A of the Billy Goat Trail, the trail descends from the rocks along Mather Gorge and comes closer to water level. Littered across the ground are ancient tree trunks worn bare by the currents of the river that brought them there.

I love how atmospheric these trees are. And to think, they've been here for over a hundred years.

It's January, what more can I say......

Along the New River there were beautiful boulders and gnarly trees and such.

Lichen altered tree trunk

While out in the woods, we spotted a caterpillar on a tree trunk. Not having a macro lens, or my tripod with me it turned out to be tricky to shoot.

Veins, thick skin and calluses
