Hand tools are generally sufficient for a large proportion of tree pruning. In addition to the use of hand tools, battery-powered chainsaws are now readily available for the professional tree industry. The level of noise these chainsaws emit is roughly equivalent to that of a large cordless drill.

Worked from home today - and witnessed the tree management we'd been warned about at the residents association AGM. Sadly this maple (though thankfully not 'our' Japanese Maple!) was marked for removal, as it had signs of necrosis and 'dieback.' I was just opening the blinds this morning and could see this fella working away, very quickly, on his own to bring it down. All very neat and efficient. It made a big old thud as it hit the deck, but landed very neatly and safely on the grass. I couldn't believe how quickly he did it all - including then chopping it up into sections and carting them off with a JCB type thing.

Ploughed through my process mapping again today - and got most of it done. So bored of it though, I'm not 100% sure I'm doing a good job anymore! Will revisit it soon and work that out, I'm sure.

Popped up into Blackheath for a very late lunch break, to get a couple more keys cut for our neighbour. Funnily enough, I bumped into her on the way, coming back home with her cousin, who seems to be helping her out with shopping, etc, today.

Heard from my brother this evening - he's been for tests and appointments for a lump on his neck, and has now been told he needs to have half of his thyroid removed. Keeping my fingers crossed that that all goes smoothly and without complications.

Hiking with attitude! When a tree came down over the levada walk in Madeira, does it stop hiking? Nope!

Must be 'entertaining' cutting down a tree you know has already broken, with ropes fixed to it - wielding a chainsaw?

Being Silver Poplars they will regenerate quite rapidly so next year they should have fairly full crowns again.

We used to have a ditch that ran the full length of our terrace separating our road and the fishing lane that goes down to the ponds...it was full of life and bustled with birds. At the top end proudly stood a Sycamore, a fir and a majestic Poplar tree. It was massive and characterful and gave our terrace a natural screen from the ugly new houses that were built across the way. But years ago, the local water authority in it's 'wisdom' with ideas of saving money spent on keeping the ditch clear, decided to rip out the hedgerow and pipe the water. We used to have regular visits from hedgehogs but when the rhyne was piped in, they disappeared.

The beautiful Poplar tree that drank from the ditch suddenly had no water available to quench it's thirst so it shot out it's roots..further and further until it finally hit into the foundations of the large Victorian house at the top of the lane....uh oh!
