13,250 whitebark pine seedlings were planted on June 18, 2018 on 55-acres of Montana DNRC and National Forest lands impacted by the 2015 Squeezer Fire by a group of partners including Montana DNRC, Swan State Forest, and the Flathead National Forest. Whitebark pine mortality in northwest Montana is the highest in the United States due to white pine blister rust infections, so the planted seedlings were selected from trees with high blister rust resistance.

A little rain could not deter 60 tree-mendous volunteers who helped plant 40 trees...and came ready to plant more! Thank you to the volunteers, neighbors of South Beaverton, and the City of Beaverton for such a successful morning! These trees will be a part of a healthier, greener future for all!

Hi all
After a couple of weeks studying my navel at L & D it was good to be back with the Eastern Voles even if the day was grey and dismal. I counted over 15 voles today and we had both Tim & Steve S to supervise etc. The task was more tree planting against the distant base boundary and I think management was well pleased that the earlier session's performance was matched with another 900 trees today. Breaking the task into very small procedures made the task very fast and the spread of plants flashed across the area we have to cover, rows being measured, bamboo canes placed, holes made, trees planted, plastic protectors placed over tree and cane, all in a trice.
Catering was excellent with honey cake and special bread pudding from Malcolm, special Xmas biscuits from Roz, chilli hotpot, teas from TWF and "Badger" steamed golden sponge so we had more than adequate sustenance for the day & task and indeed after lunch it was hard to get going again It was a bit grey and desolate on site but there was some interesting wildlife. At lunch we had good views of a large Lapwing flock (200+) flying westwards behind Chicksands Wood, there was a very large and active Badger set on the boundary fence, there were Siskins, Meadow Pippits and a flock of tits popping around the reserve and elsewhere solitary Woodcock, Kestrel and Green Woodpecker.
There is not much else to say but if the sound of our day excites you join us again next week for more of the same, only 3000+ trees to plant.
Cheers
JP
