This was translating a scene in Philip K. Dick's "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep". The scene was when the protagonist is wandering around the desert and finds a toad amiss the barren landscape.
"Translating Laughter" captures the heart of my research on humour, translation, and political storytelling in the medieval Arabic fable collection Kalila wa Dimna. These animal tales, first composed in Sanskrit and later translated into Arabic and English, use wit and allegory to disguise sharp critiques of power. In the photo, the Arabic and English editions of the text rest side by side, lit by candlelight on a piece of tatreez—traditional Palestinian embroidery. Together, these elements symbolize how stories and art forms travel across cultures, languages, and empires while preserving their hidden truths. The candlelight represents the fragile endurance of knowledge and laughter under censorship, while the fabric evokes heritage and resilience. My research explores how translation—like embroidery—threads together survival, humour, and imagination, allowing stories born under oppression to keep speaking across time.
