My photographs represent my transition to the University of Florida. I recently transferred from Santa Fe College, so I am trying to adjust from a semi-small environment to an even larger environment. Each photo shows my process of discovering the campus. My goal for each photo was to depict John Szarkowski’s five issues, such as the thing itself, the detail, the frame, the time, and the vantage point. I have some images that are my favorite, and I believe these few photos represent all of Szarkowski’s five issues.

Some of my pictures focus on shadows, and I was inspired by the work of the photographers Harry Callahan and Paul Strand. For example, the photo of my shadow on the sidewalk. Also, my picture with the star water fountain represents Szarkowski’s issues concerning time and detail. When I took a photo of the water fountain, the water is paused, and I noticed the bubbles within the water stream. Moreover, if I had to pick which photograph was my favorite, it would be the picture with me crouched down in the hallway. I love this photo because I like how I changed the filter to black and white. After all, the building my class was in gives me early 50 and 60 vibes. Overall, I hope you enjoy viewing my photos and that they help you feel as if you are exploring the campus with me.

Flo officially "graduated" high school this week, sort of wrapping up our collaborative homeschooling journey. She finished with a year of college credits under her belt and a resolute desire to marinade in the possibilities of life for a bit, soaking in some experience, while perfecting a recipe (plan) for future pursuits. Thus, the "gap year" commences! To celebrate this coming of age, Flo wanted to go spend a couple weeks with Silas in Tennessee. So, Zofia joined me in transporting Flo, and we made a trip of it, stopping in Virginia to visit our old friends Floy & Oliva, then, spending a couple nights in Johnson City. It feels a little full circle, considering almost 18 years ago, Flo was born in Tennessee when Darren and I were facing some transitions of our own. Life is interesting... and good.

Following the Mexican War, the boundary between the US and Mexico was in dispute. This area was claimed by both countries. To bolster their claim, in 1850 Mexico sent settlers to live in Mesilla. In 1854, the Gadsden Purchase, in which the United States officially bought the disputed strip of land along the southern borders of New Mexico and Arizona, this area became a part of the US. This brass palque commemorates teh peaceful transition as the US flag was raised for the first time over the sqaure in Mesilla.
