Research Project "Scripts of the Lagoon”

Underwater sounds of the Venetian lagoon recorded by Marta Picciulin, Department of Environmental Sciences, Informatics and Statistics, Ca' Foscari University, Venice (Italy).

The research project explores the relation between sound and asemic scripts (scripts that deconstruct culture-specific and structured languages and transforms them into a universal language of pure emotion). The research project aims to develop an audio-visual script for transhuman life forms. The interaction between sound, colors, shapes, and motion will create a series of animated audio-visual segments, phrases consisting of unintelligible sounds, that can be assembled and combined in endless configurations, triggered by and responding to movement and light. The sounds of the Venetian lagoon will form the base of this exploration and will guide the creation of this imaginary script that may be used as an interface between the underwater and the overwater worlds. With water as a central theme, other keywords will be scripted into the content, referencing hypothetical values for future communication across species. A series of prototypes will develop that will be displayed on screens in an interactive installation.

For her Honors project, Jennifer is researching the transhumanist movement, which promotes human enhancement through technology. She's specifically focusing on a sub-movement within transhumanism that aims to extend human longevity through diverse methods, such as rejuvenation therapies, cyborgian replacement of body parts, and uploading of individual consciousnesses into computer programs. Her primary interest is whether and how such views promote an affirmative or renunciation (or neither) of the human body and embodiment.

About the Exhibition:

What if a sculpture or an image is a question, pondering who we are and where we are headed in relation to nature, technology, and creativity?

The interest in line, the interest in fiber and pixel and what they can become in the context of time, space and materials, is still the essence of my personal explorations: the mechanics of inspiration and visual thinking, the ethics of transhumanism, and a phygital mind.

While exploring the same subjects, the work has grown in scale.

It’s unclear to me if sculptures and moving images are interior or exterior spaces. They can be both. Connections of mind and body, material and immaterial, ancient and contemporary, bio and tech, all are complexities which are not opposites. If light is a machine, what is the spirituality of technology?

Building structures as questions induces countless little responses, reactions, decisions, shaping the space into a subjective mass of thoughts, memories, hopes, possibilities, but mostly, a desire for more tenderness.
