The first place we headed to once arriving at Death Valley on this round was Dante’s View. Here, at 5’476 feet (1,669 meters) above sea level, you get an outstanding view of a good chunk of the park overlooking Badwater Basin. As Badwater Basin is as low as 282 feet (86 meters) below sea level, this is seen from well over a mile up. This year, however, water has been present in the basin. That’s not unheard of, though the fact this water has been there for better than five months is. The park was hit by Hurricane Hillary last year that dumped more rain in the park in an hour than it typically receives in a year. Considered a ‘millennial event’, the result was major damage throughout the park from flooding, transforming the face of the park in many places overnight. Wildrose Road and Titus Canyon are still impassable and may take many years to recover.
The park is still getting rain as of this past week in an ongoing event that meteorologists have dubbed an ‘atmospheric river’. That has left the park with 4.9 inches of rain over the last six months, which is more than double the normal 2 inches of annual rainfall. That has been good for the wildflowers found in Death Valley, though few are evident in the Badwater region due to the high concentration of salt. That salt is apparent here as white spread throughout the basin. Whenever water covers Badwater Basin, it becomes the ephemeral pluvial body known as Lake Manly. According to NASA’s Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite, Lake Manly spread to 6 miles long and 3 miles wide in early February of this year, ranging as deep as 3 feet. It was fascinating to be here during such an historical occurrence.
Across the basin from here is snowcapped Telescope Peak in the Panamint Mountain Range. At 11, 049 feet (3368 meters), it is the highest peak in Death Valley National Park.

Montenegro is a country in Eastern Europe bordering Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Albania and the Adriatic Sea. It used to be a part of Yugoslavia. The capital is Podgorica. The name Montenegro is Italian and means Black mountain. Montenegro was an independent princedom between 1878 and 1910 and an independent kingdom until 1918. That year Montenegro became part of Yugoslavia. In 2003 Yugoslavia was transformed into the new country of Serbia and Montenegro, but this fell apart in 2006 when both countries went their separate ways. Montenegro is therefore the youngest country in Europe. Montenegro is not a member of the European Union, but it is a member of NATO. Despite the fact that Montenegro is not yet an EU Member State, people do pay with the euro. Montenegro may be small, but this beautiful nation has a huge array of natural and man-made wonders. Once overlooked in favor of more famous Mediterranean countries, Montenegro is quickly gaining a reputation as a great place to travel. It's easy to see why. The mountainous hinterland is home to deep gorges, flowing rivers, glacial lakes and old-growth forests, popular for adventure activities. Riviera of Budva is situated in the central part of the Montenegrin coast, together with the main tourist centres Budva, Becici, Sveti Stefan, and Petrovac.
The coastal area around Budva, called the Budva riviera, is the center of Montenegrin tourism, known for its well-preserved medieval walled city, sandy beaches and diverse nightlife. Budva is 2,500 years old, which makes it one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic coast. Budva is a charming old town. There is a maze of alleys with tucked away boutiques and restaurants, cafes and bars. The buildings in Budva are exceptionally well preserved and also restored. Nice squares, good food, beautiful beaches. The walls and ruins are amazing, and you can imagine the battles, romances, discussions and other daily activities that took place here. Take the time to walk on the walls; the views are spectacular. Not only is the town very attractive, you also have a few beaches in the town directly, that will blow your mind. Beach Plaža Ričardova is very popular beach with a pebbled shoreline & clear waters, located near the walls of the old city. It takes you 200 meters of walking to reach the beach. Many restaurants and beach bars are on the beach or near the beach, as well as a hotel and some apartments, if you decide this beach to be your next summer vacation.

Looking at these beautiful masking tapes, can you believe they originated from fly catching paper from 1923? Any company survives over 80 years deserves certain admiration. Kamoi is a Japanese company started to produce fly catching paper in the 20's and gradually changed its business nature to paper adhesive tapes, recently supplying masking tapes for the auto industry.
A few years ago, a Japanese school teacher sent a mail to Kamoi requesting them to make more colors available from their adhesive tapes because she used to do school projects with a lot of their tapes and felt the demand strong for the craft projects in education sector. Kamoi responded by trial running and eventually the MT masking tape brand was born. Imagine that, one customer comment transforms your entire business. You just have to listen carefully and appreciate your customer's creativity. Today MT became wildly popular in Japan for all the possibilities this simple tool can bring to lifestyle.
I saw these tapes in Japan early 2008 when they hit the market. I immediately got a few and pondered whether this will be good for our market in Hong Kong. Some say Hong Kong is a cultural desert but I always challenge them "did you do something about it?" Lifestyle is learned, so these tapes won't get hit unless somebody is willing to show the possibilities. You just have to inspire by examples, and listen to your customers. OK, they are arriving in a week's time to city'super/LOG-ON and I'm gonna feature them in our Travel Photo Cafe 2009! As u can see, I'm after all not that lucky with clouds :) i still get cloudless sky at various places on many occasions. Well, a bright blue sky can sometimes be nice too.

This ring (made by my extremely talented wife) consists of 8 individual rings which in normal use form a stack below the mount which carries the stone, through which you poke your finger. However, they are cunningly hinged together so that they can unfold from their normal position and transform into a bracelet (shown here partially deployed).

instead of wilting , with petals falling off as other aging cut flowers do, the hyacinth flowers started to become translucent and gelatinous and slimy with age! I had not seen this before, but then i've only had hyacinths growing in pots previously, not as cut flowers in a vase

Derby’s Arboretum is recognised as the first specially designed urban park in Britain. Joseph Strutt commissioned and donated the park for the benefit of citizens of Derby in 1840. The intention was a botanical tree garden for instruction as well as leisure.
John Claudius Loudon designed, constructed and planted the gardens, while EB Lamb designed the two Tudor style lodges. Some of the trees are listed on the British Isles Tree Register, a catalogue of notable trees in the country recorded by the Forestry Commission
As a conservative estimate, I've driven past this scene well over a thousand times in the last five years. It's one of those sights that's so ingrained in my routine that I stop seeing it.
I'm glad this morning's mist changed that.

ICEBERG est une œuvre ludique et immersive qui présente le parcours d’un iceberg, de sa descente dans les eaux polaires jusqu’à sa dissolution près du littoral méridional. Iceberg est composé d’une série d’arches métalliques lumineuses qui diffusent des sons particuliers. Organisées en tunnel, elles invitent les visiteurs à s’y engouffrer pour écouter et pour jouer de cet orgue géant dont les notes et la lumière voyagent d’un bout à l’autre de ce corridor musical. L’activité humaine « réchauffe » ces monuments de glace et transforme leur nature originelle en une symphonie visuelle et sonore. (quartierdesspectacles.com)

ICEBERG is a playful immersive work that tells the story of an iceberg, from its calving into Arctic waters to its final melting near a southern shore. Iceberg consists of a series of illuminated metallic arches that each produce a particular sound. Arranged as a tunnel, the arches beckon visitors to enter, listen to and play this giant organ, whose notes and light travel from end to end of the musical corridor. CAPRIOLE - Iris van Herpen made her debut in Paris as member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture with this collection. Besides being a compilation of highlights from previous collections, this new collection also presented five striking outfits that evoke the feeling just before and during a free-fall parachute jump.
A ‘leap in the air’ (the meaning of the French word Capriole) that Van Herpen once in a while takes to reset her body and mind. The five outfits are a reflection of the extreme feelings experienced during that jump. For instance, the dress consisting of serpentine forms made of black acrylic sheets, nicknamed the ‘snake dress’, evokes the mental state at the moment before the jump when, as Van Herpen explains, “all my energy is in my head and I feel as though my mind is snaking through thousands of bends”.
