This is the central portion of a Haida Transformation Mask "Transformation masks are physical manifestations of the concept of changing from one state of being to another. They are worn by costumed dancers, who open and close the beaks by pulling on strings attached to the sides of the mask. One of Canada's great national treasures, this North-west Coast mask can be transformed from the outer image of an eagle to the inner image of a supernatural being in human form. This is accomplished by pulling an elaborate set of cords attached to hinged panels that extend to form a corona. At the moment of transformation, the performer turned his back to the audience to conceal the action and heighten the mystery. The flickering light of the fire around which he danced further enhanced the dramatic effect. The ghostlike faces painted on the corona probably represent the souls of the owner's family in the underworld awaiting rebirth. Their incarnation was controlled by the supernatural being, whose face was revealed only during these secret winter ceremonies." A truly unique monument though the idea behind the statue is even more unique
In 1991 while visiting a rock yard in Carrera, Italy, Francis Jansen found herself drawn to a large piece of marble. She saw the image of a Native American man lying on the ground and felt compelled to release from the rock the image contained within. Nine months later she completed "Transformation Through Forgiveness." The monument symbolizes and acknowledges the significant cultural impact that our Native American heritage has brought us.
The monument "Transformation Through Forgiveness" poignantly
captures the moment of truth in the transformation of man evolving into
higher self "the Eagle", a symbol of freedom and power recognized by all
people of all nations . This is the journey every man, woman and child
aspires to take if they are to rise about the experience of "self". By
"putting on the wings of the Eagle", they find their higher power, purpose, unity with God, humankind, Spirit and truly are free.
The turtle represent the earth in the Native Americans belief.
The plaque attached to the monument's base reads:
This is a tribute to the Native American peoples and stands symbolically for the healing of all wounds, be they physical, emotional, mental, spiritual or environmental.
"Transformation Through Forgiveness" is a call to all Humankind for reconciliation of man's inhumanity to man, & stands in acknowledgment in celebration of the universal understanding, “One whole nation, One whole world.”
May the eagle soar to ever greater heights and envelope human kind into the profoundness of our higher destiny.
