“I asked myself, ‘What would happen if the figures in my paintings suddenly became animated?’” - Alice Pasquini
And this was how the idea for the animated clip What Goes Around, by street artist Alice Pasquini in collaboration with animator Rocco Venanzi, was born.
What Goes Around is a previously unreleased work that fuses together a variety of techniques to create a layered, final effect—from rotoscope to full animation.
Pasquini and Venanzi worked from the video footage photographer Jessica Stewart shot while the artist was painting the interior of the Zero Stress Accademia in Moncalieri, Italy. This innovative breakdance and dj academy was founded by legendary Italian musician, Sandro Orrù (DJ Gruff), a frequent collaborator with Pasquini. Across several years Gruff and Pasquini have enjoyed a creative friendship, exchanging work and music frequently.
“It seemed like a natural time to experiment with animation, given that our friendship has always been based on creative exchange,” explains Pasquini.
Thus, it was fitting that Pasquini should make the voyage from Rome to Moncalieri, near Turin, to paint the academy prior to its opening. What ensued was a weekend of music, art, and dance that spontaneously formed as everyone passed three days together. The animation is meant to capture the spontaneous atmosphere and spirit with which the walls were painted.
DJ Gruff, acclaimed dj, beat maker, and rapper, produced the music for the animation—directing the sound design and effects.
This video/performance/mural/animation reaches its apex when Gruff’s music, like the Pied Piper, leads dancers Eddy and Valentina into animation. They melt from our real space into the painted walls, suggesting a continuous game of transformation.

i took my western landscape history students on a field trip today through parts of sonoma county -- we stopped just outside of Sebastopol to check out the transformation of local agriculture from being dominated by apple orchards (right) to vineyards (left) -- we literally were standing in a driveway looking at these two fields on either side.
as much as i like wine, the take-over of these lands by grapevines is a little disturbing -- it's a much more intense kind of agriculture than orchards, and gives the area a completely different feeling -- we were standing on the Gravenstein Highway, after all, named for the local apple variety, but with fewer and fewer orchards each year...
if you click on Flickr's map feature for this image (and zoom in), you can really see the two fields distinctly from the aerial photo...

It was surprisingly warm (-1C) but dark in the mountains. But, nevertheless, nothing can replace the feeling of being in nature...! Have a wonderful week, everyone!

Assignment: PCA71 – Transformation
Deadline: Sunday, July 12, 2009 (2 weeks)
Image Tag: pca71
From: Anthony J.T.
Mission
According to Merriam-Webster's dictionary, the general definition of transformation is "to change in composition or structure; to change the outward form or appearance of; to change in character or condition".
I think the process of representing this photographically is challenging, because the world around us is in a constant state of change or transformation. In my opinion, the most effective images move not only the subject, but the viewer, from one place to a new one (a "transformation" of sorts) evoking thoughts of how change effects the subject of the photo, the world around us, and the viewer him or herself.
The goal of this assignment is to create a work that embodies the idea of transformation - how you see it, what it means to you as a person and as a photographer. As the examples illustrate below, I believe you can have success showing transformation in a concrete or metaphysical way. Go with what you know! Submissions SOOC to Photoshop creations are perfectly acceptable.
WIT: This is an attempt to show transformation in a concrete, though imaginary way. The shapes and colours here seem to shape shift and transform back and forth somewhat. It is a few maple leaves snuggled up against an abandoned machine of some kind in the back of the mechanics shop on the college campus where I work. I was actually taking rust pictures trying to get some vibrant colour and texture for the pro assignment, but this pic popped out at me because I saw the leaves morphing into paint chips or vise versa. Maybe that is what happens ... just in this one spot. I'll keep my eye on it. Colour boosted and sharpened.
Today's finale was the Calypso Ladyboy Cabaret, and what a show it was. Humour, tragedy, glamour, talent – it was a breathtaking extravaganza that had me looking at the performers in a way I never have. The ladyboys in Thailand are known as katoyes, they dress and live as women, and are largely accepted into society as a whole. Thais believe being a katoey is a result of transgressions in past lives and that they deserve pity rather than blame.
The show featured performers at every stage of their transformation from boys to ladies. They undergo hormone replacement therapy but some shows don't allow them to perform after the final op, as technically no longer ladyboys. There is no way however that some of those performers in some of those outfits were able to disguise their masculinity! These are some of the most beautiful women around.
