In some ways, I'd say this was a long time coming. Back slap bang in the middle of the COVID pandemic, as a lot of firms seemed to do, Transdev Blazefield took delivery of 19 Enviro400 MMCs for its two flagship CityZap and Witch Way services, with the latter receiving 14 and the former receiving the balance, one being a none-specific 'Pride of the North' vehicle. Of course, we all know how the CityZap network went down after that.
But what the focus of great interest is here is service X43, commonly known as 'The Witch Way', between Manchester and Burnley. Following Blazefield Holdings' purchase of Stagecoach Ribble's much-maligned east Lancashire and Manchester operations in 2001, one-time 'Network 2000' 'Mancunian' service X43 was rebranded in short order to 'The Witch Way', in reference to the trials of the Pendle witches - technically, the route was rebranded in 2005, but the new Blazefield double-deckers for the service featured witch graphics, so I'll call it from there. Since then, and a smattering of new investments, the classic 'Witch Way' identity has taken a rather minimalist approach based from Best Impressions studio, and the route has since been curtailed to no longer serve the Borough of Pendle which inspired it's name. No wonder, therefore, some of the buses are now being repainted into generic Burnley Bus Company livery.
A bus wearing a route brand rather at risk of losing it's identity, Transdev Burnley Bus Company's 'The Witch Way'-branded 2003, a 2020 ADL Enviro400 MMC, is seen departing Shudehill Interchange on an X43 service to Burnley.
