Promise

As you sit in silence,

Wondering why

I'll be your shoulder to cry on

Until your tears run dry.

When you've been hurt,

And can't believe what they've done

If you need someone to talk to

I'll be the one.

If a close friend hurts you,

And you don't understand

Remember I'm here,

I'll lend a helping hand.

Burdens are lighter when carried by two,

And I just want you to know

I'm here for you.

Stagecoach decides on its coaching aspects.

Stagecoach has reached agreement to sell the retailing activities of its Megabus and Falcon scheduled coach businesses to Scottish Citylink, the well-established joint venture (JV) between the group and ComfortDelGro.

The transaction is expected to complete in mid-August. It will also see Stagecoach’s share in Scottish Citylink increase from 35% to 37.5%.

Announcement of the sale agreement represents a change from an earlier position that, under initial plans for Stagecoach to be purchased by National Express, would have seen Scottish Citylink take on the marketing, retail and customer service activities of Megabus and Falcon but also become wholly owned by ComfortDelGro in a deal slated at the time to be worth £8.75m.

The proposed purchase by National Express subsequently collapsed and Stagecoach was instead acquired by DWS Infrastructure. The Scottish Citylink JV is already responsible for services operating under that brand, along with Megabus-branded routes to, from and within Scotland.

At the time that the earlier, more extensive planned deal between Stagecoach and ComfortDelGro was announced, the prospective purchaser said it was planning to further expand its provision of scheduled coach routes in the UK with “new and innovative” services. Since then, ComfortDelGro has agreed a €12m purchase of Galway-based GoBus to make it Ireland’s more than third-largest scheduled coach operator.

Around 30 Stagecoach employees are expected to transfer to Scottish Citylink as part of the sale of Megabus and Falcon retail activities. No changes will be made to the operation of those services, with vehicles and drivers still provided by Stagecoach.

Speaking about the latest agreement, Stagecoach Chief Executive Martin Griffiths says: “Inter-city coach has a positive future as a greener and better-value alternative to the car and as the UK rail network continues to see rising fares and operational challenges.

“The agreement we have reached with ComfortDelGro will provide certainty for employees in these businesses and ensure that we can continue to benefit from future growth in the inter-city coach market through our increase share in the Scottish Citylink joint venture.”

Adds Sean O’Shea, speaking on behalf of ComfortDelGro as CEO of its Metroline subsidiary: “ComfortDelGro’s 20-year relationship with Stagecoach in Scotland is set to expand, and I look forward to working together to deliver great services for inter-city customers in England and Wales.”

So Stagecoach is holding on to its coaching business. To be fair, the sale of the coaches was only to satisfy any referral to the Competition Authorities over the purchase by National Express. With that now not happening, it’s hardly a surprise that it’s holding on to them. Of course with the entry of FLiXBUS and Ember into the UK market the coach industry is undergoing a period of change. An example of a Stagecoach bus is 27225 (SK15HCG), part of its Western Buses fleet, a significant provider of coaches to both Megabus and Scottish Citylink joint ventures.

War without end and the third anniversary rolls up.

Ukraine has not fought so hard, spilt so much blood, wasted so much, spent so much and suffered so very much to surrender now. Traitorous transactional tyrant Trump is an aberration, an insanity that will pass in four years. A lasting just peace for Ukraine is essential and will outlast Trump and his corrupt cohorts far beyond their time.

Russia is on its knees, its economy about to blow up. Its army is notionally big but definitively not clever, devoid of modern equipment, devoid of trained manpower and devoid of any strategy beyond grinding bloody unsustainable slaughter. One or other will collapse and drag the other with it.

Trump’s grotesque treachery cannot and must not be allowed to succeed not simply for the sake of Ukraine and its long suffering people but for the sake of a secure peaceful Europe. The people of Europe should be on their knees with gratitude that it is “only” Ukrainian lives that are being destroyed and should be willing to pay any amount to keep Ukraine in the fight against an existential threat to us all.

Trump’s sleazy sycophantic submission to Putin when Putin is beyond weak, staring into the abyss, begs the question: WHY? What is so compelling for Trump to turn American history and military policy for 80 years on its head and betray all that America has stood for, as the beacon of democracy? The answer is for another time but will be as black as Putin’s heart. Reagan would have happily armed Ukraine to the teeth and thought it a bargain: the destruction of the US’s oldest enemy without spilling a drop of American blood for a fraction of the US annual military budget.

Trump’s insanity brings gin clarity for Europe. Either Europe takes over from the US and throws everything into supporting Ukraine until it takes back a minimum of Crimea, Zaporizhia and Kherson OR it surrenders its future to yet another bloodier, wider war for Europe’s children, determined by a long dead disgraced demented narcissistic psychopathic felonious fraudster, rapist piece of excrement.

The mistakes of 1919 must be avoided at all costs and this war must end with a Ukrainian victory and the death of Putin (and ideally Trump).Or we will all suffer. Slava Ukraine.

"Dům U Nováků is an art nouveau commercial and multi-purpose building at the address Vodičkova 699/34, 110 00 in Nové Město, Prague 1, near Wenceslas Square. It was named after Josef Novák, a tailor and textile entrepreneur who ran a department store and also owned a tailor's salon. The building has been protected as a cultural monument since 1958.

The house and shop of the butcher Vodička once stood on the plot, after which the street is named. Here, in 1878, brothers Antonín and Josef Novák, originally from Česká Třebová, bought a house and a thread and toy store, a former brewery, U Štajgrů, for a relatively low sum. The brothers acquired the store from a seriously ill owner who died three days after the transaction. The brothers focused their business only on the sale of textiles. After the death of Antonín Novák, Josef takes over the management of the company, successfully develops it and expands the product range to include tailoring and fashion.

The house was built between 1901 and 1904 according to the design of the famous architect Osvald Polívka. It is a multifunctional business palace with an arcade, shops and facilities, offices, sports halls, a playroom and U Nováků theater for 700 spectators and a cabaret hall.

The client and owner of the building, Josef Novák, died two years after its completion in 1906, at the age of 51, but the name J. Novák remained on the building for a long time and was returned to the building after the Velvet Revolution of 1989.

The building has rich art nouveau stucco and sgraffito decoration, it was originally designed as a department store with luxury fashion and jewelery goods. The prototype of the concept was contemporary department stores with corridors with large glass windows, created mainly in Paris, Milan or Naples. The passage of the house was only the second in Prague and excelled in the number of shops. In 1912, the painter Jan Preissler decorated it with a wall allegorical fresco Trade and Industry.

In the 30s of the 20th century, the U Nováků theater housed the Liberated Theater of Jan Werich, Jiří Voskovec and Jaroslav Ježek, which moved here from the Na Slupi Theatre.

The New Town (Czech: Nové Město) is a quarter in the city of Prague in the Czech Republic. New Town is the youngest and largest of the five independent (from the Middle Ages until 1784) towns that today comprise the historic center of modern Prague. New Town was founded in 1348 by Charles IV just outside the city walls to the east and south of the Old Town and encompassed an area of 7.5 km²; about three times the size of the Old Town. The population of Prague in 1378 was well over 40,000, perhaps as much as twice that, making it the 4th most populated city north of the Alps and, by area, the 3rd largest city in Europe. Although New Town can trace its current layout to its construction in the 14th century, only few churches and administrative buildings from this time survive. There are many secular and educational buildings in New Town, but also especially magnificent gothic and baroque churches. These nevertheless are not the main drawing points for tourists. New Town's most famous landmark is Wenceslas Square, which was originally built as a horsemarket and now functions as a center of commerce and tourism. In the 15th century, the Novoměstská radnice, or New Town Hall, was the site of the first of the three defenestrations of Prague.

Prague (/ˈprɑːɡ/ PRAHG; Czech: Praha [ˈpraɦa]; German: Prag [pʁaːk]; Latin: Praga) is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic and the historical capital of Bohemia. On the Vltava river, Prague is home to about 1.3 million people. The city has a temperate oceanic climate, with relatively warm summers and chilly winters.

Prague is a political, cultural, and economic hub of central Europe, with a rich history and Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architectures. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia and residence of several Holy Roman Emperors, most notably Charles IV (r. 1346–1378) and Rudolf II (r. 1575–1611).

It was an important city to the Habsburg monarchy and Austro-Hungarian Empire. The city played major roles in the Bohemian and the Protestant Reformations, the Thirty Years' War and in 20th-century history as the capital of Czechoslovakia between the World Wars and the post-war Communist era.

Prague is home to a number of well-known cultural attractions, many of which survived the violence and destruction of 20th-century Europe. Main attractions include Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, Old Town Square with the Prague astronomical clock, the Jewish Quarter, Petřín hill and Vyšehrad. Since 1992, the historic center of Prague has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.

The city has more than ten major museums, along with numerous theatres, galleries, cinemas, and other historical exhibits. An extensive modern public transportation system connects the city. It is home to a wide range of public and private schools, including Charles University in Prague, the oldest university in Central Europe.

Prague is classified as a "Alpha-" global city according to GaWC studies. In 2019, the city was ranked as 69th most livable city in the world by Mercer. In the same year, the PICSA Index ranked the city as 13th most livable city in the world. Its rich history makes it a popular tourist destination and as of 2017, the city receives more than 8.5 million international visitors annually. In 2017, Prague was listed as the fifth most visited European city after London, Paris, Rome, and Istanbul.

Bohemia (Latin Bohemia, German Böhmen, Polish Czechy) is a region in the west of the Czech Republic. Previously, as a kingdom, they were the center of the Czech Crown. The root of the word Czech probably corresponds to the meaning of man. The Latin equivalent of Bohemia, originally Boiohaemum (literally "land of Battles"), which over time also influenced the names in other languages, is derived from the Celtic tribe of the Boios, who lived in this area from the 4th to the 1st century BC Bohemia on it borders Germany in the west, Austria in the south, Moravia in the east and Poland in the north. Geographically, they are bounded from the north, west and south by a chain of mountains, the highest of which are the Krkonoše Mountains, in which the highest mountain of Bohemia, Sněžka, is also located. The most important rivers are the Elbe and the Vltava, with the fertile Polabean Plain extending around the Elbe. The capital and largest city of Bohemia is Prague, other important cities include, for example, Pilsen, Karlovy Vary, Kladno, Ústí nad Labem, Liberec, Hradec Králové, Pardubice and České Budějovice, Jihlava also lies partly on the historical territory of Bohemia." - info from Wikipedia.

I was keeping company with a friend who was in need of a car rental. Inside the rental office building, while he conducted his business transaction, I scouted for a suitable stranger to approach to photograph.

In a scan of the long room, I observed this young woman enter with a small group of people. The others went to a rental counter leaving her to stay back in the waiting area. She was alone with a single roll aboard suitcase. I approached her with my introduction. She was familiar with Flickr, and agreed to participate without missing a step. Meet Kelly, 36/100 of my 100 Strangers.

I suggested we move a few paces closer to a large window, to permit a portrait with some natural light on her face. She was less than three feet from the window. I used a reflector to fill in areas on the side of her face that was closer to the interior of the room. The effect was only mildly helpful. Because of her hat, I couldn’t bother to bounce a fill off the ceiling; it would only have placed greater shadows down onto her face.

When we concluded our creative portion of the encounter, we sat on nearby seats and chatted a bit. Kelly is 23 years-old and came out to Albuquerque from Dudley, Massachusetts. She is visiting New Mexico for the first time. Kelly and her group were renting a car to drive just outside of Santa Fe. They were about to embark on a landscape painting workshop in Ghost Ranch, Abiquiu, NM. Their destination is an educational retreat center known for both excavated dinosaur fossil discoveries and more famously as a site of rugged landscape inspiration for 20th century American painter Georgia O’Keeffe.

Kelly studied business at Worcester State University and minored in Art. I asked her to describe herself to me:

“I always overthink things,” Kelly confided.

Once we finished the exchange of email contact information, I offered her recommendations for dining in Santa Fe; also, a convenient side trip for unusual landscape scenery between Albuquerque and Santa Fe, in case they were to have time before leaving the area.

When Kelly replied to confirm receiving her portrait, she said that she thought it was beautiful. That made my day. It was gratifying to portray her as a work of art as she was embarking on a week of making her own art.

Coachwork by Pininfarina

It was like a scene from a spy novel. In the early hours of the morning and with a suitcase full of money next to him, Ivan Mahy drove off for a rendez-vous in the village of Deurle, just outside Ghent. The seller wanted no prying eyes to see their transaction. A few months previously, a customer of Ivan’s brother Hans had given him a tip. In a garage, deep in the green Flemish countryside, two classic cars were hidden away. A Ferrari and an Alfa Romeo. One blue and one grey, without a roof. The Ferrari was a 250 GT with Boano coachwork: a prize-winner in its day, but not uncommon. The Alfa Romeo was much more of a rarity: a 6C/2500 SS from 1949. The company had only made 383 of these short wheelbase Super Sports, most of them with Touring bodywork. Its three carburettors and light weight allowed the six cylinders to push the needle on the speedometer up to 150 kilometres per hour, making the Super Sport one of the fastest cars of the 1940s. The ‘find’ in Deurle was the stunning cabriolet version, designed by the celebrated Battista ‘Pinin’ Farina. Only 63 of these two-seaters were ever made and most of them had been lost by the time Ivan Mahy set off for his secret meeting at the end of the 1980s. The Alfa in question had also seen better days. Rain seeping through the garage roof had left rust spots on the elegant lines of its nose and its once gleaming grey flanks were now smeared with layers of dirt. Ivan made an offer for the car. The owner said he would think about it. He did. For months. Out of the blue, he phoned up from France. Mahy could collect the cars, but (of course!) no-one must see him. Discretion was essential. Handing over the suitcase of cash was no problem. Discretely removing the cars was something else. The garage doors were blocked by some large tree branches and an overgrown hedge! After much huffing, puffing and cursing, the Mahy’s finally got their ‘loot’ loaded onto the trailers. Back in Ghent, the Alfa was painted with a sand-coloured primer to stop the rust. Since then, it has remained untouched, still minus its headlights and its front maker’s shield, resting balefully on three wheels in the gloom of the factory hall. Original Borrani wheels, even worn-out ones, cost thousands of euros – far too expensive, in the opinion of the stubborn and parsimonious Mahy, for a car that will never see the light of day. Consequently, it was only on three wheels that the Alfa ‘limped’ into the photo studio for its session, following which it was returned to obscurity in Leuze. A sad end for one of the most magnificent cars ever to come out of Milan.
