Tithe barn wall.
This was taken at Frampton Tithe Barn which has featured before in the Wattle monochrome image.
I'm always a bit drawn to windows and doors, arches and portals. And so with this. The window is quite small - less than two feet square. Presumably for some sort of communication or transaction.
But I'm allergic to sepia toning so this is a challenging move for me. Cliché it may be, but I need to grow up a bit and be more accommodating and less prejudiced :)
And this image was one of those where I half think the original full colour version is more interesting - the bricks have a wonderful range of colours.
Thank you for taking the time to look. Much appreciated. I hope you enjoy the image. Happy 100x :)
[Handheld in daylight.
Developed in Photolab 3 going for a full range of colour and retrieving the deep shadow detail in the top of the window from the raw file.
Sharpened in Affinity using High Pass and Linear blend which is good for large features and lines I have discovered.
A fair bit of correction to the geometry to get the lines parallel.
The crop was difficult to try to get the visual tension balanced between the S truss and the window, limited by the in-camera framing. Hmmm... take more next time and crop later...
Into Nik Silver Efex for the conversion, using a colour filter to add variation in the brick brightness. Lots of micro-contrast and structure.
Lots of localised tweaking in Efex around the window, in the window, and around and in the S-shaped wall truss.
Heavy sepia toning for the silver with a more yellow tone for the paper.
Finally, a light light vignette, though quite subtle I think.]
A pair of KCS-family SD70MACs ease their way towards Kansas City off of the old GM&O line from St. Louis. This is a westbound at Rock Creek Junction in Independence, MO, and the train was headed towards KCS' Knoche Yard.
Three years after TFM was formed in 1996, they acquired these new units, and the 1623 continued to serve until it was involved in a head-on wreck in Keithville, Louisiana on December 30, 2013. As it was a BNSF train, the BNSF ended up taking possession of this unit, and trading KCS for a 70MAC of their own! More info on this transaction can be see here: flic.kr/p/yw4ppT

What happens in an act of language is not only a transfer of data from speaker to hearer, but a social transaction with reality whose ramifications escape over the horizon of the present and beyond the act of speech itself. The act changes the society in which it occurs. The society then adjusts to that change, becoming different from what it was before the act happened. This adjustment means that no subsequent act of language can ever touch the society in exactly the same way as the previous act did. And it is in the constant adjustment to such change that a society increments its own awareness of its peculiar nature, that it shakes out and tests its own public and private norms, that it works out its sustained response to the phenomenon of its own existence in the real world. It is this ongoing adjustment which is the society's fundamental and most important business. It is where politics, morals, and all the arts are born. It is where all these, together with philosophy and religion, emerge in intimately related form, not yet separated out into competing and often contradictory “disciplines” which are by definition matters of the second order.

This is somebody who thinks that Trump has lost it. Completely. Truth has always been a marketable commodity for him, but even ethnic cleansing degenerates now into a business transaction. The man is shameless, whatever attempts at damage limitation are now rolled out. Brace yourself. Fuji X-E3 plus Samyang telephoto lens.

Yesterday I got busted by hubby! Seems that if I add up every Paypal transaction since October 1 ...the number is staggering!!! Today I started my dolly diet by avoiding a dolly meet where I knew I would spend a bag full of $$$. I stayed home and tidied up my dolly room and put together a second glass display cabinet. I have one more beautiful girl adopted from Maasje that will be joining the family as soon as she is paid for and two girls on a commission list. That is it for 2011!!!
Anyone else in a similar predicament?!?! Hurry up 2012!!!
Bac Ha (Vietnam) - Qui vend ?
Bac Ha (Vietnam) - Who's selling? Who's buying? I have no idea. I arrived just as bundles of bills were changing hands. The only certainty is that several buffaloes were at the center of the transaction. I stayed for about ten minutes after taking this photo to try to understand what was happening. I think it was the Blue Hmong woman selling two cattle to the men. But I'm not 100% convinced.
I didn't see who left with the buffaloes. The protagonists stayed behind, the cattle having probably been transferred by truck. But I had left a long time ago.
I was in a strange and blue-beautiful area of Tokyo called Ginza. I had no purpose, as usual, and was wandering about. I saw some sparkling little jewels inside a shop and walked inside randomly and saw hundreds of amazing teapots... I bought some exotic tea to bring home and grabbed this photo while waiting for the transaction to go through. via Trey Ratcliff on FB at ift.tt/1v05hWZ Snapchat: treyratcliff ift.tt/1qx3iMJ Instagram: treyratcliff ift.tt/1c7s6Uy
We were walking down the street. The three of us. Keiko, Skorj and I. Having a good time, in the drizzly and cool Tokyo afternoon. Minding our own business really. Walking off lunch, chatting, talking shop, taking pictures (At least some of us where, and some others, like me, thought they were, but I digress. You'll get it if you keep reading), marveling at Mr. Skorj's pinhole and Polaroid skills.
Point is we were walking down the street on our way to Ueno Park in search of stray cats to photograph. When all of a sudden. a man approached us, approached Skorj. A man with a somber look and dubious intentions, with an USB cable protruding from his sweater.
He offered to sell Skorj a camera. 1000 yen, he said, in his very thick Russian accent.
Apparently he was a Russian sailor, selling some cameras for pocket money, selling friend's cameras he brought with him on the ship. The rest of the details are fuzzy.
The camera was a Lomo Lubitel 166B. The shutter cocking lever was missing but other than that it looked interesting and in pretty good shape for a toy camera. Ahh, it did have a roll inside, not yet done with, in need of developing.
After a conversation, negotiation and much amusement had by all (except the Russian, who did not smile once) Skorj opted to buy the camera just so he could get the film inside and see what happened with it. The Russian wrote an address on a very colorful Russian photo shop mailer so that Skorj would mail him the photos if they came out? I'm not sure. I have the envelope now.
The 2nd camera offered to us was a very cute half frame toy camera, an old Russian Agat 18, loaded with film. Same price. 1000 yen.
Nobody else wanted it. So, of course, I bought it. I winded the roll in the Agat when I returned home and I do not think I'll get anything from it, but the canister is here, sitting on my desk. As soon as I read the info on the camera that Keiko so kindly sent to me I'll load some film in it and take it out for a spin.
Anyway, back to the story of the photo:
Later on during a coffee break, Skorj offered the Lubitel to Keiko and I. Keiko passed. I passed. But Skorj said he would toss it if nobody wanted it. You can do TTV with it, he said. Hmm, I've forgotten all about TTV. Okay, so, I gladly accepted the gift.
Mind you, I had taken photos of the whole thing. The sale, the passing the camera around, the three of us at the café, the cameras. All with my Hasselblad.
Thing is, later on, while at Ueno Park, when we finally found some kitty cats that stayed and posed for us and meowed for us and let us pet them and after all the wonderful, crazy and funny things that happened to the three of us that day; of meeting Keiko and Skorj and walking and shooting around town, when I finished my 220 roll on the Hasselblad and it was time to wind the film and reload, I realized there was no tension when cranking the back.
There wasn't any roll inside the Hasselblad. I had shot twenty-four imaginary photographs.
Photos of people, of people with cameras, of Keiko and Skorj taking photos with their Polaroids (Keiko's lovely green leather beauty) and pinholes, of hybrid sakura trees with white and intense pink flowers in the same branch, in the same clusters. Photos of kitty cats in Ueno Park and people enjoying picnics under the Sakura trees, with sakura petals raining on them and at least four or five frames of the Russian incident.
Of all the photos taken that Sunday afternoon, this Polaroid is the only hard copy of our Tokyo Russian sailor street camera seller adventure that made it to Seattle with me. I had forgotten all about it until a few days ago, when I found it in an envelope with Akane's postcards and the rest of the Polaroids I brought back with me. This Polaroid alone lived to tell the tale of the Russian and the Lubitel and of a wonderful afternoon spent with two lovely people, two Polaroid friends.
Somewhere along the way from Asakusa to Ueno Park, right before the coffee break and after the restaurant supply shop district.

Ankaramena (Madagascar) - The Ankaramena zebu market is not a major event for cattle breeders. In any case, not like that of Ambalavao several hundred kilometers to the West, where we can see gatherings of more than 1000 cattle.
Here, when around fifty zebus change owners, it’s a good day.
Raising zebus in Madagascar is a particularly profitable profession. If some old breeders still like to dress in rags to illustrate the saying that it is better to be pitied than envied, the youngest no longer hesitate to dress in the “trendy Malagasy” style.
On this scene two zebus will change owners. The crouching man holds in his hands a small plastic box containing the money from the transaction.
