Nothing fancy here. Just a simple B&W image with a dab of Selective Coloring.

I'm still thinking about how awful that event was thirteen years ago on 9/11.

One of my best contre-jour tram shots just happens to be of tram 2551, seen here at Morden Road in March 2012. This is part of my reprocessing in mono project.

It's such a poigniant shot, as 2551 was the tram involved in the Sandilands accident where 7 people lost their lives and many others were injured.

I call it Tragedy and Joy because of the girl on the left seemingly jumping and having fun and obviously, no-one knew the fate of the tram at this point.

Today in We're Here!, we're looking for "Beauty from Tragedy" and I feel like I misinterpreted the theme. Tragedy is that flowers have to die, but there is beauty even in dead flowers.

I bought these flowers in February, but never threw them away when they wilted and died. And, now, here we are...

When the ending isn't a happy one...

They had paid a fortune for this trip, but they knew it was worth it. They were about to witness one of the most tragic and iconic events in history: the sinking of the Titanic.

They boarded the submarine, a hulking, antiquated-looking vessel that could travel through time and space. They were greeted by their guide, a cheerful and charismatic man who wore a vintage suit and a bowler hat.

"Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the Time Tours. I'm your host, Mr. Williams, and I'll be taking you on a journey to the past. Please, make yourselves comfortable and enjoy the ride."

The submarine submerged and activated its time engine. A screen showed the date and time: April 14, 1912, 11:40 p.m. The submarine emerged near the Titanic, a majestic and colossal ship that glowed with lights and elegance.

"Wow, look at that!" one of the tourists exclaimed. "It's so beautiful!"

"Yes, indeed. The Titanic was the largest and most luxurious ship of its time. It carried over 2,000 passengers and crew, including some of the richest and most famous people in the world. It was also considered unsinkable, but we all know how that turned out."

The tourists gasped as they saw a huge iceberg looming ahead of the Titanic. They knew what was about to happen, but they couldn't take their eyes off the ship.

Then it came. The moment of impact. The tourists watched closely as the Titanic struck the iceberg and sealed its fate. . .

[Note: Many stories use time travel to witness the wonders and horrors of history. A few examples are "Vintage Season" by C.L. Moore and Henry Kuttner, "Up the Line" by Robert Silverberg, and "A Sound of Thunder" by Ray Bradbury (my favorite - where a hunter travels to the Jurassic era, accidentally kills a butterfly and changes the course of history.)]

The tragedy of life is not that it ends so soon, but that we wait so long to begin it.~Anonymous

The Doolough Tragedy is an event that took place during the Great Irish Famine in southwest County Mayo.

On Friday 30 March 1849 two officials of the Westport Poor Law Union arrived in Louisburgh to inspect those people in receipt of outdoor relief to verify that they should continue to receive it.For some reason the inspection did not take place and the officials went on to Delphi Lodge – a hunting lodge – 12 miles south of Louisburgh. The people who had gathered for the inspection were thus instructed to appear at Delphi Lodge at 7:00 the following morning if they wished to continue receiving relief. For much of the night and day that followed therefore seemingly hundreds of destitute and starving people had to undertake what for them, given their existing state of debilitation, was an extremely fatiguing journey, in very bad weather.

A letter-writer to The Mayo Constitution reported shortly afterwards that the bodies of seven people, including women and children, were subsequently discovered on the roadside between Delphi and Louisburgh overlooking the shores of Doolough lake and that nine more never reached their homes. Local folklore maintains the total number that perished because of the ordeals they had to endure was far higher.

Doolough Pass

A cross and an annual Famine Walk between Louisburgh and Doolough commemorates this event. The monument in Doolough valley has an inscription from Mahatma Gandhi: "How can men feel themselves honoured by the humiliation of their fellow beings?"

so they got a tragedy on the road and they focus on ppl and unfocus on the background

It was a horrible tragedy. My heart is with you.

A side note...with the earthquakes, landslides, etc. that have happened of late, I wanted to remember those affected by those tragedies, too. My hope is for safety and peace for those affected. And healing of hearts and bodies of the survivors.

Please don't post your photos here nor GLITTERY IMAGES. They will be removed. Don't invite me to any group. I will not accept ;-)

Just off to the right of this picture is the scene of the fifth largest non-nuclear, non-natural explosion in history, which took place on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus on 11 July 2011.

A large store of explosives and ammunition self-detonated, killing 13 people and severely damaging Southern Cyprus' only power station (the chimneys shown are part of the re-constructed facility).

When I took the photo I wasn't aware that it included a gravesite (indicated by an arrow) which I assume belongs to one of the victims. (To zoom in click on the picture once - or twice - and press the "Escape" button on your computer to return to the normal view)

Sometimes life hands you clichés.

This is a photo of a young Iraqi girl taken during a night raid in the War on Terror. The girl had been in a car with her parents when they failed to stop at a military checkpoint. Soldiers on duty fired warning shots and then opened fire on the vehicle when it it continued toward the checkpoint at high speed. Both of the girl's parents were killed. This is one of the many tragedies that come from Iraq almost daily. Over the course of almost twnety years, Iraq has been bombed, raided, burned, and searched too many times to count. American troops have had an unmistakable presence there since the Gulf War of the early 1990's and have participated in two wars. During that time hundreds of thousands of casualties have occured. Today, vast portions of Iraq have no electricity or indoor ploumbing, since bombs and raids have destroyed the city. This young girl is only one of the many children orphaned by the war. Entire families are left homeless. Schools, hospitals, and neighborhoods have been destroyed. The future for this little girl is grim, as it is for all of Iraq. Sadly, scenes like this have been a part of several conflicts that U.S. soldiers have taken part in. Civilian casualties have occured not only in the Middle East but also in Korea, Vietnam, and the Phillipines. This can have an extremely detrimental effect on a developing nation, since trauma early in life can dramatically change a person. This little girl will grow up facing the pain she experienced upon the loss of her parents, pain that will likely taint her image of the west and the world in general.

What would Auguste François Marie Glaziou think? It is estimated that 90% of the National Museum collections were lost in the fire.

I am posting the second of two pictures I took a month ago of a sunset between two hopper cars.

Tragically we have lost four people in train accidents the last couple of weeks. Yesterday a semi-truck ran into a train in small town close to here and the driver was killed. Three days ago a 61 year old man walked under a crossbar to save a few seconds. He didn't realize a train was coming from the opposite direction and he stepped in front of it. The week before a man was crossing a railroad bridge spanning the Red River in Fargo and was hit. The week before a 24 year old musician was found along side the tracks, he had fallen from a freight train he was riding.

Caution and common sense has to be used when ever you are dealing with a train, they are dangerous.

This ancient archive photo shows the crash of the LL314, during its approach to the geothermal research centre on the Parallax.

Gravitational anomalies bent and twisted the light around the asteroid, meaning that pilots had to trust their instruments and not their eyes. Unfortunately many of the visual distortions were so convincing that spacemen would disbelieve their radars, fly by sight and hit the ground.

This experiment would have been impossible without Lego Jim's work on MOCpages.

The female Chinatown red-tailed hawk died some time between midnight and 8am on March 31, 2016. She had been displaying signs of illness the previous day. In all likelihood, she ingested rodenticide. Her mate didn't seem to understand why she wasn't moving and he kept trying to rouse her. Here he tugs at her feathers. Absolutely heartbreaking.

Here in the shadows

There's no wishing well

May the Blessed one forgive me

Like so many times before

There's no savior at the door

It won't matter anymore

Touch me now while we reach the end,

I wonder where you are right now, right now,

Oh my dear

She still has sunshine in her weary eyes

A bed of roses to testify my love

A promise made, now I will make a try

There is no power in earth to tear us apart

Love's tragedy asunder

Oh, set your spirit free

Love's tragedy asunder

Do I believe
