One year ago I was on holiday in Nippon. These are some photo's of exactly one year ago.

2nd day Kyoto. 3rd event for the day was the Fushimi Inari-taisha (the mountain of orange torii gates) which is in the East of Kyoto. The place is centuries old. At the base of the Inari mountain you can find the Fushimi Inari-taisha which is the biggest of many Shinto shrines. Big place; pretty crowded.

The big 'attraction' is going up the mountain through these thousands of torii gates. Is is not that steep; the top is at 233m and you can do a full circle which takes about 1 - 1.5 hours. I got lost so I probably spent some more time in the forest. Don't underestimate it because I have seen some people not doing to well. Take enough water with you. An ambulance cannot get up the mountain, you are on your own.

People walk inside the Senbon Torii ("thousands of torii gates"), the two dense, parallel rows of gates at the entrance to the torii-gate-covered hiking trail to the top of the scared mount Inari (233m) in Kyoto, Japan. The torii gates along the entire trail are donations by companies, families or individuals and can cost from 175000 yen (~1500Euros) for a small sized gate up to over one million yen for a large gate. The gates placed in damper areas have to be replace every 5 years due to deterioration. The date of donation and the donator's name are inscribed on the back of each gate.

Up inside one of the bamboo forests is one of the most densely-packed cemeteries. These red Torii gates are bought by individuals to promote success and happiness. The big ones are expensive, but the smaller ones are more affordable and can be placed in up in these remote cemeteries and shrines. #80Stays #rcmemories #Kyoto #Japan

Today's shot is another collaboration with my wife Erika. I honestly haven't felt very motivated or creative when editing my own photos lately and this collaboration with her has been much more enjoyable than editing my own photos as of late. This shot is of course of the Torii gate at Epcot. We were just kinda hanging out and shooting here at sunset and getting some great colors in the process. Enjoy.

Such a picture can be found in almost every Japan travel guide: The way up to the Blessed Sacrament of the Fushimi Inari shrine is lined with thousands of these orange-red torii, which are labeled on one side with the wishes of their donors.

Atago Torii, Sagano-Toriimoto, Arashiyama, Kyoto, Japan

For ages, pilgrims passed through this narrow street to climb up Mt. Atago to visit the Atago Shrine, for ‘the God who prevents fire lives there.’ When homes are made with thatched roofs and dried bamboo, tragic fires are a legitimate concern. Hirano-ya, a tea house (the thatched roof building on the right), has been serving pilgrims on their way to the top of Mt. Atago for generations. This building is about 400 years old and has not changed much, except for the prices of the food served there. A simple matcha (green tea) could cost as much as $10. The Sagano area of Kyoto represents one of the last remaining sections of thatch-roofed homes in a rustic area of the old capital. Today it is a preserved street called Sagano-Toriimoto. For present-day pilgrims, this is usually the end of a popular trail through Arashiyama, but for us we started at this spot one morning. It was a serene and beautiful place to begin the day.
