After years of struggling playing classical or soft pop music, WLOL-FM in Minneapolis-St. Paul hit it big as the Twin Cities hot hits station in the eighties. In the days of analog tuners, they billed their dial location as 99 and a half rather than 99.5.
This is a page from a direct mail flyer advertising a sweepstakes contest in the summer of 1984, featuring morning drive team John Hines and Bob Berglund (and Roger too!), Bill Lee in the afternoon, TV meteorologist Paul Douglas with the weather and a playlist of just the hits by the likes of Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie and Hall & Oates. "No heavy metal. No obscure album cuts."
As popular as the station was in the eighties, the ownership decided to sell it out to Minnesota Public Radio in 1991, which turned it into a non-commercial classical music station.
You never knew where the Summer Fun Patrol would show up!
I saw them in person once when they stopped at the Anchor beach in Milford. The Summer Fun Patrol truck was driven that day by Brian Phoenix, one of my favorite DJs. It was extremely cool to meet him in person AND to win a New Waves Boogie Shirt as well as a large package filled with promotional photos of all the jocks!
My single cover for "Heart Attack" by Demi Lovato.
Originally started as a cover for the album, this cover quickly took a turn when nothing was working for me. When I looked at this picture, it kind of just reminded me of this song. The finished product, at first lacked something: color. So with a handful of edits, this is my cover for Heart Attack. I'm in absolute love with it. Comments?

Ayy
My girl is bangin'
She's so low maintenance
Don't need no champagne poppin' entertainment
Take her to Wendy's
Can't keep her off me
She wanna dip me like them fries in her Frosty
But every now and then when I get paid
I gotta spoil my baby with an upgrade (ayy)
Ayy, ayy, ayy
Yeah, we fancy like Applebee's on a date night
Got that Bourbon Street steak with the Oreo shake
Get some whipped cream on the top too
Two straws, one check, girl, I got you
Bougie like Natty in the styrofoam
Squeak-squeakin' in the truck bed all the way home
Some Alabama-jamma, she my Dixieland delight
Ayy, that's how we do, how we do, fancy like, oh
Fancy like, oh
Fancy like, oh
Fancy like, oh
Uh, don't need no Tesla (don't need no Tesla) to impress her (to impress her)

when they came back to plug their Earth Headquarters back in again, they found it somewhat dusty and crawling with little earthlings.
toen ze terugkwamen om hun Hoofdkwartier Aarde weer in werking te stellen, was dit nogal stoffig geworden en vergeven van de aardlingen.

Fab 40 survey from KDWB-AM 630 ("Channel 63") in St. Paul-Minneapolis, dated December, 28, 1963, a major turning point in American popular culture, in between the Kennedy assassination and the Beatles first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. No signs of a coming British Invasion found here. Twin Cities group The Trashmen have the number one spot with "Surfin Bird/King of the Surf."
Jim O'Neill (a.k.a. Prof. James Francis Patrick O'Neill) went to WLW in Cincinnati in 1967. Lou Riegert later became known as Lou Waters and eventually turned up as an anchor on CNN. Bob Casey was the stadium announcer for the Minnesota Twins from the 1960s to the 1990s at Metropolitan Stadium and the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, as well as a longtime radio sports commentator.
KDWB still exists as an FM contemporary hits station at 101.3 in the Twin Cities.
For a Photoshop project I superimposed a photo of the old WFIL roundhouse studio building into the Liberty Bell design on a 1976 WFIL music survey cover.
This scan is from a small photo in the Encore yearbook for 1978. That's a rack of carts in the background where all the jingles and promos were stored on the radio version of 8 track tapes. Those square headphones are so 1970s!
Radio was completely analog back them. No automation computers like today. You had to know how to back-queue records, fire them up at just the right moment after a jingle, talk them up to the vocal, remove the previous record, get the next tune ready for airplay and think of something clever to say. You also had to handle the phones for requests and write an entry in a log of the songs you played. It took work and experience to make everything sound completely seamless and effortless. I loved every second of it!

Top 20 hits for Canadian radio station CKPR-AM 580 in Thunder Bay, Ontario for the week of September 29, 1984. Top hits were still a viable AM radio format then, in spite of the format's rapid migration to FM. Also interesting that there are no Canadian artists represented here, in spite of the Canadian Content rules there. Chart likely represented what was actually selling, not necessarily what they had to play.
Chart is from a Thunder Bay TV magazine.
Hand-drawn 1975 fantasy ad for a fictional top-40 radio station, KPRA-AM 920. Depicting typical 1975 young listeners and promoting the disc jockey lineup, NBC News on the hour and "American Top 40" with Casey Kasem, along with "HITS! HITS! HITS!" Note the joint in the hand of the dude in the lower left.
Probably my best Parthenon picture. Taken at 6.30 am, 20 June 1975, the day we left Athens to live in Johannesburg. There is not a tourist or a guard in sight! No fences, no scaffolding. There were some Evzones there, who had just raised the Greek flag. Scanned from slide.

Antwerpen Meetup #1
After Brabo chopped off the giant's hand, he threw it in the river, right at the spot where now rises the city of Antwerp.
Ant-werpen = Hand - werpen = throwing the hand; clearly a legend based on folk etymology
Antwerpen Meetup #1
Toen Brabo de hand van de reus had afgehakt, wierp hij de hand in de rivier, op de plek waar nu de stad Antwerpen ligt.
Ant-werpen = Hand - werpen = throwing the hand; de legende is een duidelijk geval van volksetymologie
Bruno's, 2389 Mission Street, San Francisco, California. Bruno's used to be an amazing bar/lounge/Italian supper club, straight out of the 1950s. The interior was gorgeous, vintage space-age style, and they had awesome live jazz bands. Alas new owners gutted the place, ripped out all the vintage booths, bars, and decor, and turned it into a top 40 hip-hop dance club. Ugh.
