I’ve made my decision: It’s Lightroom.
all review sections:
part 5: conclusion
In the end, the decision was more difficult than I expected. In short, each program really plays to each parent company’s strengths. Apple has always been an expert with its design and function and it shows in Aperture. I found the user interface, while certainly a larger learning curve than Lightroom, just to be more comprehensive and useful. It’s not so much about bigger items or statistics, but just on overall “feel” Aperture really delivers. I also really appreciated the organizational tools: The project and subfolder structure, the smart albums, the common keyboard commands, vaults and the overall layout.
In contrast, Adobe is primarily known for its huge graphics editing background with Photoshop and the rest of the Creative Suite. Therefore, it isn’t a surprise that the editing and output capabilities of Lightroom really overpower the Aperture toolset. Editing is faster, more intuitive and overall I occasionally I'm able to just provide more creative and successful results with the tools in Lightroom.
Speed, as reported widely online and in print, is another strength of Lightroom. Even with my 1.5Ghz Powerbook G4 Lightroom works pretty well, even snappy sometimes. Aperture is just slower, to the point of occasional annoyance. Admittedly with newer Mac products results will be better on the Aperture side, but I’ve found a surprising number of complaints by new Mac owners as well.
So there was the breakdown: UI and organizational features for Aperture, speed and editing power for Lightroom. In the end I decided that output for me is what matters most – I want consistently strong results, and that combined with Lightroom’s speed really put it over the top. In addition, looking long term, while I could easily be wrong, I have the feeling that it’s going to be easier for Lightroom to catch up to Aperture (note to Adobe: add a magnifying loupe tool, pronto) in the organizational department than for Aperture to catch up to Lightroom in terms of its sheer speed and editing capabilities.
To conclude, while Lightroom was the choice for me, Aperture and Lightroom are very good products and I’d recommend either depending on your needs. I think most amateurs, and almost anyone with a not bleeding edge Mac (one without a higher end video card) would probably be best served by Lightroom’s straightforward appeal and faster performance. That said, for higher end users and professionals where organization is where it’s at (e.g. wedding and studio photographers) Aperture could be worth a look.
I’d recommend anyone thinking about these programs just to download the free trial of both and play around a bit.

Lobster fisherman work the waters around the little town on Monhegan Island, Maine. I created this "postcard" style image using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5, Adobe Photoshop CC, and Nik Software's Color Efex Pro 4 tools. The original raw file was processed in Lightroom then I sent a copy over to Photoshop. Using the Nik Color Efex toolset as a Smart Object I added a light "Glamour Glow" to soften the details, a little edge blur effect, and the black and white image border. I like the mood that the extra trimmings create in this already picture perfect scene!
If you are interested in photos like this I have big news coming soon about a photography workshop that I will be leading on the Coast of Maine this fall...

Writing from the airtrain to JFK en route to O'Reilly Foo Camp. It promises to be an exciting weekend of meeting, developing, and general geekery. Also looking forward to a couple of quick meetings with my good friend Tao @ Swivel.com to iron out the beginning of my consulting work for the startup, which aims to yield some exciting work that will hopefully prove to be a useful toolset for hackers and data-fetishists everywhere. Stay tuned...
Time to get checked in and catch a few z's before SFO. Be good.
Still behind. It may take a few days to catch up.
All of the 366 Snaps photos for last June 17 were taken at Bentley's, where we ate breakfast. It's fairly dark in the B-N-L, and I only took 7 photographs. This was not just the best; it's really the only acceptable image.
So here it is again, processed differently. A year ago I processed it (in Bibble Pro--now available as Corel Aftershot Pro) according to my then-current practice of imitating Ilford film printed on Kentmere Art De Luxe using the Andrea plugin. Today's version was more directly processed using Bibble's built-in tool set. Both, as usual, were then sharpened in Photoshop Elements.
One side effect of the daily photo project was that I learned Bibble's toolset. For much of the year this gain largely showed as increasingly sophisticated use of the product's Andrea plugin, but by the year's end I was mostly using the program's "native" tools. This set is limited--Photoshop Elements is a far more capable program--but for most photographs I've found it adequate. What's more, the program's design makes it nearly impossible for your to destroy the original photo by accidentally overwriting it with a modified version.
And Bibble's an excellent product for sorting through a lot of photographs (that's what I originally purchased it for), and for applying the same processing to a group of photos quickly.

This photograph is an outtake (well, actually an alternate treatment) from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps.
Number of project photos taken: 7
Title of "roll:" Bentley's
Other photos taken on 6/17/2012: Joan and I spent much of the day wandering around Sault Ste Marie, where I shot nearly 300 pix. After supper we visited the Tern colony; I took well over a thousand mostly-lousy pix.
