"The American Conservation Experience (ACE) DHA program has provided me with the exciting opportunity to act as a Natural Resource Specialist (NRS) at the Bureau of Land Management Bakersfield Field Office. As an Oil and Gas NRS Intern, I have participated in a range of management practices within and outside of the oilfields.

Upon first arriving to the Bakersfield Field Office, I was no expert in the processes involved with overseeing oilfield operations. I’ve spent many hours reading documents, visiting pump sites (potential, interim and reclaimed), and interacting with a number of BLM staff and oil and gas operators. I’ve also fulfilled personal and professional goals of developing a stronger knowledge toolset of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process.

However, oilfields aren’t the only setting to aid in fulfilling BLM objectives! One of my favorite opportunities so far has been a Giant Kangaroo Rat trapping, which we were invited to participate in by biological consultants who work often with the BLM. Also, I’ve participated in events such as the annual Kern River Valley Pride Day and National Public Lands Day, where we collected trash and participated in restoration activities.

This internship will be one of lasting importance for me. I’m excited to continue my journey with the BLM, where I will develop a stronger understanding of fluid minerals operations and administer national environmental policies intended to sustain our socioeconomic and biologic needs!"

I essentially wanted to give Leliana something of her voice actor's face, while keeping my feeling of her personality. There are a number of facial differences between the two...I'm still trying to decide if I am happy with this rendition or not.

Today I moved my son out of the UW Stout dorms for the final time. He graduated last Saturday and completed his finals week activities (yes, they do them in that order, I don’t know why). Mjölnir has been used to deal with raising and lowering the dorm lofted beds for four and a half years and can sleep easy in my toolset until needed again.

Today also brought a close to the regular trips to Menomonie, WI in spectacular fashion as I drove most of the 356-mile round trip in conditions warranting a winter storm warning from the National Weather Service. While I’m grateful I wasn’t counted amongst the many crashes, spinouts and slideoffs that I saw, I’m also not eager to repeat the experience any time soon. There were enough close calls and one near disaster that I have had enough of winter driving for a while.

This shot demonstrates one of the advantages of shooting in Manual. This shot is not heavily edited; it's the exposure I went for in the camera and is very nearly an "out of the camera" shot (I did lower the shadows and darks a little in LR, but not much). Aperture or Shutter Priority would prevented this exposure, and Automatic Mode? Forget about it!. :-)

That being said, there's nothing wrong with shooting in the Priority Modes at all, but knowing how to use your complete toolset to get the capture you want is definitely an advantage.

About the Presentation:

Reduce your cycle time to improve your value delivery

The faster your software is deployed, the quicker you can get feedback. With release management in Visual Studio you can configure, approve and deploy your applications for any environment. Create automated deployment orchestrations for each environment no matter how complex the configuration. Delivering your software more frequently and easily to an environment allows your testers to get to work validating your system and keeps your stakeholders involved in giving feedback.

This presentation will walk-through the steps of creating a release pipeline using the RM Client, defining the mechanics of deploying with deployment sequences, giving business users control with approval workflows, and continuous delivery integration with Visual Studio and TFS.

Scribd is batch & broken?

Summary

Exporting a quick news.yc post from my blog engine to Scribd. I found adding to Scribd is batch & broken? Or is it?

I write a lot on startups, badly some say. [0] I also like using my own tools that allow me to write something quickly, then export to external sites like Scribd.

'... I also want to use some sort of online 'editor' to write markup and edit ...'

I really want to be able to post in real-time, preferably using my toolset . I don't know if I'd tolerate using other toolsets but I'll take a peek to see if this is possible. I also want to use some sort of editor, preferably online to write markup and edit online. I realise that not everyone wants to write text online. Scribd appears to be geared to pre-written, edited and formated information in different formats. I accept this. [1] My initial impression is Scribd does not appear to be geared towards real-time, information generation.

So I decided to test my impressions and try to generate information in real-time at the server. Here's what I've found.

Upload

Because I have control of my ng blogging engine [2] I can do tricky things like export content to other sites. The only way I could upload a quick post [3] to Scribd is via an upload form. [4] While you can upload existing files in lots of different formats creating a document online is difficult. In fact I have come to the conclusion that the way scribd has been structured, this may not be possible at all.

Editor

I selected the upload link [5] and found you could either publish a document OR ... edit text in a box. I was surprised by this. I would have thought a more comprehensive option for editing online. There are plenty of tools around. The ideas and technology behind this is well understood. Coming from a slashdot, flickr sort of background I'm used to having tools you can just edit information and get an instant response.

So I added a post by adding an existing post I created for news.yc. The first thing I found was you could not enter any markup. In this case XHTML. It was simply rendered, tags and all. So I drop back to plain text. No tools for adding emphasis, bold, etc. In terms of markup this is pre-historic. Eventually I did find a rich text editor in a link right next to the plain text box. I simply missed this the first time. Why this is not default I'm not sure? My only suggestion is it takes more resources. You certainly need this type of markup to improve the readability of the content.

Editor take 2

Sometimes it is possible to leverage better tools to your advantage. So it was of no surprise that I found the addition of a Facebook application using the newly created API. Facebook is mature, polished and has some slick editing tools so I wanted to see if Scribd had leveraged Facebooks editing tools ? [7] MyNotes in particular. But could not find anything beyond a upload on the Facebook Doc homepage. [8]

Despite the fact I couldn't find a way to create content in Facebook and export to Scribd does not mean it's not there now or in the future if enough users request it.

Editing

I continued. Saved the content, added a title, summary and tags (looking good) and hit enter and go to edit. What, "you can't edit the saved file?". You can edit the title, summary and tags. What about the content? Now that's a bummer. I happened to make a simple mistake so I could find no way to make changes once saved? [6]

Save, view, oddities

I also noted some oddities in the final saved document with URL links. I would have thought links would be converted to clickable urls. This problem can be avoided using the rich editor and only applies to the basic editor. Another oddity is saving the document. A document is recorded with title + summary + tags and other meta data. Finally the document itself. So I didn't bother adding the title, summary or any other references to the document. Why? I've already added them once. But I got a surprise when I find no title, summary or tag information in the downloadable text file.

No DRY storage of information here [9]. There is an assumption the document or information uploaded is discrete and contains all required meta information. A duplication. I'll have to be more mindful of this for future uploads. To me adding the title, summary again in the text will initially look funny to the reader who will see two titles, two summaries and then the content.

Things I like

There are some aspects of Scribd I really like, including

* unique url for a document

* text metrics (text statistics)

* view metrics (traffic analytics)

* selective licensing

* various download formats

* community feedback (view information, comments & voting)

These alone make Scribd useful both users and authors. Especially the feedback loop from logged in readers.

Real-time ready?

At the moment the focus appears to be on pre-existing documents and wisely so. I initially thought the tools are a little primitive but quickly found some alternatives. I'm still confused about the inability to edit saved documents. This one for me is a bit of a killer. For small snippets of information the inability to import the added meta data (title, summary and tags) may cause confusion when reading. If left out confusion in downloaded documents. I'm also surprised there is no upload for XHTML or any path to import HTML like documents at all. The one thing I really miss is an API. With an API I could simply create the text, export it dispensing with the UI supplied altogether.

Will I use Scribd? Yes. But the question is I will have to adapt my approach taking into account the short comings I've discussed. [10]

Salon Prive 2021

In 2002 Ferrari began production of the fastest road car they had ever made. Controversially named Enzo after the firm's legendary founder, this 650bhp, 217mph supercar was the fourth in a line of ultra-high performance Ferrari's. The Enzo weighed in at 1365kg, a little heavier than Ferrari had hoped for but still light enough for 476bhp per tonne.

A normally aspirated V12 with an all-alloy block formed the heart of the Enzo's 6-litre motor and was the first of a new generation of Ferrari engines. With 5998cc it returned to a four-valve cylinder head and featured a variable-length induction system that extended the length of the induction pipes from 340 to 430mm via hydraulic actuators. Also new was variable inlet and exhaust valve timing that helped produce 650bhp at 7800rpm, more than any previous Ferrari production car.

Performance figures were very impressive, 0-60 in 3.5 seconds and 0-125 in 9.5 making the Enzo the fastest car in production between 2002 and 2004. The most obvious F1-derived detail was surely that raised nose flanked by a pair of radiators located ahead of each front wheel. These directed hot air through vents to the upper body, thus preventing it from merging with the underbody airflow that used fast air to generate even more downforce - as much as 775kg at 186mph! Complex under body active aerodynamics meant no need for a traditional large rear wing.

The cabin was a technological tour de force also, the most advanced of its day. A complex steering wheel housed controls for driving modes, traction control, a trip computer, reverse gear and wing angles, the upper rim incorporating five LED's that came on in 500rpm instalments after 5,500rpm. Just 399 (+1)Enzo’s were made between 2002 and 2004, all of which were completed in left-hand drive, the last car rolling off the production line in May 2004.

Confirmed by Marcel Massini to be one of just thirty-seven Enzos originally finished in Giallo Modena, this example was delivered new in the U.K. through Maranello Sales. Arguably a more fitting colour for the Enzo, Giallo being the colour of Modena; Enzo Ferrari’s birthplace.

Its first owners, Ciaran Caulfield and Michael Cullen, a pair of Ferrari fanatics and close friends who raced together in the Ferrari Challenge Series at the time; the pair received the car on 8th July 2003. In addition to its Giallo Modena paintwork, the car boasts a black interior with carefully chosen Giallo stitching. The contrasting stitching can only be found on the steering wheel, handbrake gaiter, across the top of the glove box and in the headlining. The remainder of the interior is exquisitely appointed with special-order, diamond hatching, on both the seats and rear bulkhead; a very rarely seen option. It is understood this option was made available to the original owners as close friends of Luca di Montezemolo; also known to have extended the number of options available to those in the Ferrari Challenge series at the time!

The diamond pattern does away with the yellow stitching, more subtly finished in black for a supremely elegant interior. This is believed to be the sole Giallo Enzo with a diamond pattern interior. Additionally, the car sees a Giallo rev counter, four-point harnesses in black and large-size seats.

First registered to Caulfield, the Enzo was seen out and about during that time, most notably at the Goodwood Festival of Speed just after it was delivered. It was re-registered to Cullen in August 2003 and remained registered in his name throughout the remainder of their joint ownership. Passing through an intermediary owner for a very brief amount of time, the Enzo’s second registered owner acquired the car through Graypaul Nottingham on 3rd February 2005, amazingly, the car would remain in that family’s ownership for the following 15 ½ years, before being acquired by its current custodian in August of 2020.

Upon his purchase, the current owner set about meticulously bringing the car to Concours standards, which included removing all “sticky-plastics”, a common problem on Ferraris of this era, and sending them out to be refinished, refurbishing all four wheels, and a complete detail.

What helps this Enzo to stand out from its peers is the truly incredible volume of factory accessories and memorabilia accompanying the car, this collection was truly a labour of love compiled by the current owner who spent countless hours tracking down these individual items:

- A complete set of original manuals including the original warranty manual and Ferrari-branded torch.

- A complete toolset, including white working gloves still in plastic packaging, all fuses, centre lock wheel tool, and original tyre inflator in its case.

- Luggage set: two suit carriers and one handbag

- Four red Ferrari-branded covers: one for the car, two for each seat, and one for the steering wheel

- Spare key

- Original battery charger

- Original press kit for the Enzo, including an unopened 2002 Ferrari Yearbook and a booklet on the Enzo published by Autocar magazine

- Six lithographs in their protective case

- Spare accelerator pedal

In terms of its service history, the car has been wonderfully looked after, only by Ferrari authorised service centres, from day one. Each invoice is included in the car’s history file, comprising of two binders of documentation, and no less than fifteen stamps in the service book. The last annual service was carried out by Maranello Egham at 15,835 kms on October 2020. At this time, the Enzo was also inspected for Classiche certification which was subsequently granted in December 2020. Its certification binder accompanies the history file, which confirms that the Enzo is finished in its original colours and retains its original engine and gearbox, presenting today just as it did when it left the factory.

Further to this, the car has been enrolled in the Ferrari Premium program, which is an official Ferrari program that ensures that all scheduled and preventative maintenance has been carried out, including confirming that all recalls have been completed. This exciting new program was established in 2019 to support the owners of modern classics in ensuring that their cars are always properly looked after to the highest possible standards, using only original Ferrari components. The program enables the replacement of components that are subject to wear over time, such as the notorious sticky buttons (the replacement of which were recently completed on this example), as well as suspension and trim components amongst other items. As of September 2021, this is the first Enzo in the U.K. to be enrolled in this program, and it is accompanied by a certificate issued by Ferrari stating that all of the requisite maintenance has been carried out as of September 1, 2021. This accounted for just over £12,000 of work in addition to the car’s most recent annual service and saw work carried out on the fuel induction system, cooling system, hydraulic power steering system, and the braking system of the car.

Needless to say, this is an Enzo that truly needs nothing, a wonderful car in all regards, one that can easily be driven and enjoyed as intended, having already been driven 15,900 kms from new, and a car that could easily be displayed at Ferrari Club Concours events, along with its numerous accessories and memorabilia.

Asian American speaks out about racism in Sweden and is met with more racism

On October 19, Katherine Zhou published a thread on Twitter before going to bed detailing her experience with racism while working and living in Stockholm, Sweden. She expected only a few people would read it.

When she woke up the next morning, the thread had gone viral. People were responding with messages of support, denial and more racism. AsAmNews spoke with Zhou about her experience as an Asian American in Stockholm and the response to her Twitter thread.

Microagressions, racism and physical intimidation

Zhou moved from Austin, Texas, to Sweden in January 2020 after taking a job with Spotify. She says the company gave her generous financial compensation, offering her a large relocation budget, housing assistance and a high salary. Spotify did not, however, prepare her for the cultural differences she would experience.

“It’s truly something we have to be wary of and find out ourselves,” she said.

So, Zhou did her own research about the country, its culture and its attitudes toward Asian people.

“My Google searches before I moved there were like: What are the racial demographics of Sweden? Are there Asian people in Sweden? Is there Asian food in Sweden? Is Sweden racist?” she said.

Google searches can’t capture an accurate picture of a country’s culture. Zhou found few written resources about racism in Sweden. What little literature there may have been was written in Swedish, which she could not read.

When Zhou arrived in Stockholm, she began experiencing microaggressions that she says would be considered archaic in most major U.S. cities. She was coughed at, tutted at and mocked for her eyes. People crossed the street to avoid her. Although Sweden’s political leadership in 2020 was more progressive than the Trump administration, the compounding microaggressions made her feel unwelcome and bothered.

“I like to compare it to death by a thousand cuts when these kinds of things happen again and again and again,” she said.

In February of this year, two men cornered Zhou while she was at a city train station. They mocked her eyes and flipped her off. Eventually, another man came over to assist her after she pleaded for help.

Zhou took pictures of her aggressors during the incident. Her ex-patriot friends from the U.S. and the U.K. suggested that she could post the photos on social media. Swedish colleagues working in the security and legal sectors told her that would get her in trouble.

“There are certain laws against defamation or slander that are constructed in a way to really compromise victims,” Zhou said. “I was told by multiple people that I went to get advice from to not share the photos or the videos.”

She reported the incident to the police as she was advised. She provided the police with time stamps that described when the men entered the station. She gave them a map showing where the incident occurred.

For two months, Zhou said the police led her to believe they were working on her case. Instead, they told her the case had been dropped because of insufficient evidence. They also claimed that in two months they could not find an English interpreter to assist Zhou.

Speaking Out

In September 2022, Zhou watched as the political tone of the country shifted during the Swedish general elections. The Sweden Democrats, a right-wing Swedish political party with roots in the neo-Nazi movement, won 20.5 percent of the vote, making it the second most popular party in Sweden.

The party espouses staunchly anti-immigrant belief systems and legislative policies. Zhou wanted people to understand that the political climate in Sweden and her experiences with racism are connected.

“This political party, this rise of fascism in Sweden, is enabling people like my attackers,” she said.

She began “rage-tweeting,” as she describes it, about the physical intimidation and microaggressions she has faced. Her thread described the traumatic incident she faced in February. She also discussed a video she took as she confronted a Swedish woman

Zhou’s thread about racism is met with more racism

There have been supportive responses to Zhou’s thread. She says that people who experienced similar things have confided in her. A few people have also helped her identify the two men that cornered her.

Many Swedish people responding to Zhou’s thread denied that racism existed in their country. They told her that the men who accosted her did not look Swedish. In an ironic display of xenophobia, they claimed they must be Kurdish or Balkan. Twitter users sent her links to an article that claimed Sweden was the second least racist country in the world.

Zhou said she also received “a gamut of responses that proved my point” about racism in Sweden. She was called racist names and sent death threats. One tweet, which was eventually taken down, leaked her address to the public.

Several people also accused her of being a Chinese spy. The accusations have forced her to repeatedly describe her heritage and family history.

“Some journalists were asking me, ‘Can you explain your background, your heritage so we can put this to rest?’ It’s so weird to have to litigate who I am,” she said.

Education and Bystander Intervention

Zhou does not believe that increased policing will help prevent the things she has experienced.

“What we can do instead of an increased police presence is community accountability of people looking out for each other, people standing up for each other, speaking up for each other,” she said, recalling how it was community members that found her attackers.

She also believes the country needs to stop ignoring racism.

“They need a baseline recognition that there is racism in their society. They need to not be in denial,” she said.

Zhou acknowledged that confronting racism is a “newer” problem for Sweden. Immigration to the country rose markedly after World War II but for centuries society was ethnically homogenous. Sweden may not have the toolset that the U.S., which she describes as having “an ugly legacy of racism,” does to talk about race and racism.

“We have the vocabulary, we have the tools to talk about it. Not all of that exists here,” she said.

She also suggested that Sweden cannot afford to alienate and abuse immigrants. Immigrants in Sweden fill important positions across a variety of job sectors, making them an important part of the economy. She recalled thinking it was ironic that people were telling her to “go back to China” when Spotify fought so hard for her to work in Sweden at an office that was predominantly staffed by ex-patriates.

“It’s really rich because this country needs immigrants,” she said.

Loud Objects (Tristan Perich and Kunal Gupta) at iMAL, november 16, 2010, beginning with a Noise Toy mini-workshop including Erg students, then for a performance-concert.

Loud Objects' performances start with punctuated silence as they begin to solder together microprocessors on an overhead projector, exploding into noise when the initial circuit is assembled and new chips are added and rewired. Their entire toolset consists of soldering irons, power and audio jacks, and a handful of Atmel microprocessors, pre-programmed in C via USB from a laptop using tuxgraphics' AVR programmer.

Compare this photo with the previous photo. Do you see how short the pencil on the left has gotten? That's the result of hard geometry, precise lines and almost-obsessive sharpening between each major part of the project.

What's the project? Can't tell you yet. CAN tell you, that notebook underneath has all the text written in it. It's ready for ink and illustration.
