Lomo 3.7x, 68 photos, continuous light

These are my light painting tools, nothing fancy or expensive but I've had a lot of fun with them.

If your interested in light painting check out this new light painting group Shining Light on Cancer.

An earlier variation on the image Diagonal Pattern, from two images back.

Though I prefer to use masks, I finally edited my brush for this by making a brush and using it with the eraser tool.

GIMP has a tool called the Paths Tool, which is like the Pen Tool in Adobe. I used it to create the brush used in this pattern.

Masking is easy; clipping masks are rather confusing. Just what I need to keep my mind occupied : )

The carpenter's shop at King's Landing maintains the 1860's theme. All the tools are from that era and a carpenter does many chores using the 19th Century tools.

UPDATE UPDATE: BoingBoing updated their article and now link back to this page. Thanks.

The wooden tools pictured here were beautifully made by hand by master woodworker Frank Weisner in Australia. I have waited a few months to get them, but they are certainly worth the wait. To give an idea of scale, the sewing frame in the center is only 7 inches wide. The most coveted tool is the lying press and plow on the left, which is used to trim the edges of the book block before the covers are added. The standing press will come in handy to apply the initial pressure necessary after glueing the covers. The other tools on the right are a corner rounder which is not much used in miniature bookmaking (it was sitting on the shelf so whatthehell), and lastly my Schärff-Fix leather skiver which is a must have tool for leather binding.

Spooky. There's a camp bed in there.

Some of the personal possessions of my late father.

The three miniature hammers, the mini anvil, and the micro adjustable saw, are all tools that he made himself.

All the others have been modified or improved in some way.

He mentored me in many mechanical subjects, and was always trying to improve my understanding of metallurgy. Even as his vision started to fail and his desire to work on things diminished.

He taught me to: live life on my terms. To pursue things that made me happy. To not settle for what was made available, and to always look to improve what was around me.

I'm missing him today as I clean up my shop, and handle things he gave me, things that I learned to make with his help&knowledge.

I am who I am today, because of his support, and his example.

I hope I can do the same for my Son, and Daughter.

A group of nice old bicycle tools from arround the early 20's or 30's two of them are marked Burgers E.N.R. (Eerste Nederlandse RIjwielfabriek) which means the first Netherlands Bicycle factory.

I knew that some tools where marked with the name of bicycle brands and where supplied with the bike for maintanance during a cycling tour. Most of the time there was also an small oilcan in the litle bag enclosed. I am searching for an nice toolbag in brown leather for my old Fongers bike which i am restoring on the moment.

1. Taking pictures a tool (camera), not a photographer.

2. The choice of tool limits the possibilities.

3. Experience allows him (instrument) less and less to limit their capabilities.

4. The ability to see is given only when the observer allows ...

5. The moment of observation is the real find ...

6. Training and mastering it defies. Training leads to poor imitations of the original.

7. Often the result should ripen, like wine. Although time is the understanding of the mind, therefore it is very speculative.

8. The meaning of all this is the process!

9. Let it be!

Ouch! Missed as so often happens when hammering in a nail.

Parked between what used to be Marrakesh Restaurant and Fort Fringe, these three backhoes are no doubt getting ready to participate in the upcoming transition of the 600 block of New York Ave. NW in Washington, DC

Awesome Tool roll collaboration with Lemolo Bags!! These things rule and are super versatile. They are space great for Brooks style saddle loops but will strap on any saddle, handlebars, racks, toptubes, pretty much any where you wanna stick it. And, they come stocked with Full Size tools!! From the tiniest Park allen wrench up to 8mm, 8-11 mm box style Park wrenches, Topeak full sized chain tool, two Tire levers, a green spoke wrench and even that chainring bolt tool no one ever has around! Also has little bungees for keepin a tube of your choice in the roll. I couldn't be more excited on how these came out, Elias at Lemolo is amazing and really nailed this. They are $120 fully loaded with tools and ready to ship.

Tool kit left in the wall of an abandoned office car park, strange as all the tools looked brand new, there was even a set of cutters still in their blister pack.

Dr. David Baltimore is a Nobel Prize-winning biologist whose work has profoundly shaped modern molecular biology and immunology. His discoveries have altered our understanding of viruses and immune responses, laying the foundation for advancements in gene therapy, cancer research, and vaccine development. Yet, his influence extends far beyond the lab, through his leadership in research institutions and his role in guiding the future of scientific inquiry, he has helped shape the landscape of modern biology.

I photographed Baltimore on November 2, 2021, at Caltech’s Athenaeum, a setting befitting his legacy. Our conversation was wide-ranging, touching on molecular biology, the evolving challenges of university administration, and the responsibilities of scientific leadership in a rapidly changing world. His insights carried the weight of experience, tempered by a continued passion for discovery and mentorship.

We sat for portraits beneath his own painted likeness in the Athenaeum, a moment that highlighted his enduring impact. Later, in the shadowed reading room, surrounded by art and the quiet weight of history, his presence felt both scholarly and deeply reflective. It was a setting that underscored not just his scientific contributions but also his role as a custodian of knowledge, someone who has not only expanded the frontiers of biology but also ensured that those who follow will have the tools and guidance to push them further.

Baltimore’s contributions to virology and immunology have helped shape the foundations of modern biomedical science. His leadership at Caltech and beyond continues to influence generations of researchers, making him a pivotal figure in both scientific discovery and institutional stewardship. His work serves as a reminder that science is both a pursuit of knowledge and a responsibility, one that demands vision, integrity, and a commitment to the generations that will inherit its discoveries.
