love the texture of my dads tool box

In about 1981 I made a Tool Chest for my son, Mark. Again he was to use half of his allowance to buy things to fill it, woodworking tools. I also overlaid it with small diamonds and triangles. I was seeing what all I could do, and what it would look like.

Two reinforcing strips which are also where the locks snap round make the toolbox infinitely more difficult to prise open.

Scaled down tool tote from the Handyman Club www.handymanclub.com/projects/articletype/articleview/art.... This is a 12" long box instead of an 18" box, because my wife wanted something smaller and we are going to give the full sized one to my in-laws.

Ye Olde Toolbox

Since my car is getting a pedicure (i.e tire balancing and rotation) at Town Fair Tire today, I went rummaging through my basement for something interesting to photograph. I found my grandfather's old toolbox filled with bottles and jars containing rusty nails, nuts, bolts, and staples. The toolbox dates back to the 1930s and ultimately came to me when my grandfather passed away in '79.

To setup today's shot, I simply arranged a couple of sawhorses in front of the door to my furnace, placed the toolbox on the sawhorses, and lit the scene with a single 40 watt Phillips natural light incandescent bulb. The clamp light was placed to create those deep shadows to the left of the box. I wanted a very gritty and grainy image, so that played heavily into the post processing.

Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, boost black, boost white, and contrast. The detail slider was pushed pretty far and that's what emphasized the grit and grain. A sepia photo filter in darker color blend mode followed by a levels adjustment was added in PSE.

I built this box last night as a way of developing my understanding of a traditional Japanese tool box. It's just balsa wood: not really serious woodworking at all. But the more often I build these projects, the easier it is to think in three dimensions. And the easier it is to build these boxes again in full size, full-weight materials.

All of this is training for the Kavad, of course.

I’ve got a Husky toolbox for my wrenches and other tools but it seemed a crime to put wood tools in it. So I decided to build my dream toolbox. To keep with the wood theme, every component is wooden, the box, hinges, latches, and handle. The wood is honduran mahogany and the finish is lacquer.

Inside the toolbox:

- multimeter

- cable ties

- back full of left over nuts and bolts

- binoculars for spying on neighbours

- regulator instruction manual

- bag with tools
