About the Steve Nash Foundation
About the Foundation
Formed in 2001, given U.S. charitable status in 2004, and Canadian charitable status in 2007, the Steve Nash Foundation is a private foundation dedicated to assisting underserved children in their health, personal development, education and enjoyment of life. Like its NBA MVP founder, the Foundation is fast becoming a leader in assists . . . to a slightly shorter population.
Through our own initiatives, and through grants to public service and nonprofit entities in British Columbia, the Foundation aims to grow health in kids by funding projects that provide direct services to children affected by poverty, illness, abuse, or neglect, and create opportunity for education, health, and empowerment. We love the opportunity to get involved in the good work being done by child-focused ngo’s in our home province.
The Foundation also seeks to afford thoughtful solutions to community needs through our own projects to address critical health and education needs. The Foundation focuses its resources on underserved populations of children in British Columbia, Arizona, and the country of Paraguay. Equipping a neonatal intensive care ward in Asuncion to provide basic necessities for infants and their families, developing an early childhood education center of excellence to bring best practices to young kids that don’t always enjoy that access in Arizona, and uniting civic outreach, corporate and social service organizations to show kids how to get involved in their communities are examples of the daily work of the Foundation’s small but dedicated staff. Stemming from our first ever Steve Nash Foundation Charity Classic, held in Toronto, Ontario, in 2005, the Foundation is also working closely with the City to establish an all-access, all-kids after-school center there to build hope through hoops for kids.
While our work focuses exclusively on child welfare, we believe that corporations must share responsibility for the well-being of our communities. The Foundation employs and encourages environmentally-friendly office practices, and offers grantees assistance in developing their own recycling and energy conservation programs (check out our Green Leaf here). We also like to highlight the important work of other individuals and organizations, using our website links to increase their exposure, and contribute to their efforts. Further, we are proud to be working with young people that excel in their chosen fields, from whom we welcome energetic leadership and fresh voices.

Lets skate!
It's been a while since Albert had been on any adventures, and so today decided it was time to get back out there! But what to do? He thought about sky diving, or rock climbing, but didn't have any equipment ready and raring to go.
So he started flicking through the extreme sports channel and came across skateboarding. Fantastic Albert thought. In his youth, Albert was one of those children who raced through busy towns on his skateboard causing all sorts of grief for pedestrians, so he was no novice when it came to the plank on wheels. However, he was no expert, and had not been on it in a number of years.
He ran to the loft and found his old board, covered in spider webs and what he hoped was dust. After a quick clean, it was back to normal, and Albert set off for the local skate park. When he got there, he went to the top of a ramp and stood on the board admiring the view. "Now how do I get this thing going" he thought to himself. He began to lean forward, and as he did so, he felt the board slipping. He tried to lean back to stop it, but it had gone too far. The board shot out from underneath him, and Albert went sliding down the ramp.
This happened a few times, until Albert was able to master it. But when he did, he was so excited, the adrenalin buzz that Albert was looking for was there! As he rocketed down the ramp, he felt 13 again, with the wind whistling past his head. It was soon dark, and Albert vowed to return soon to lean more tricks.

Alingsås, Sweden.
Visiting lights in alingsås, a light installation spectacle held once a year, I came across this skatepark. The light changed constantly and I took some shots that all looked pretty cool. However I couldn't decide which one to post so I have combined three of them here.

View large on white highly recommended.
Our homage to Martin Schoeller's picture of Tony Hawk in his kitchen.
We were sitting around sunday morning, nursing our Jager-Bomb induced hangovers after Eddie's birthday, and Theresa was looking through my Martin Scholler book. She saw his classic pic of Tony Hawk skating along his counter in his kitchen, showed Guru, and he then suggested we re-create it. Guru is of course The Bird Man, Theresa is appropriately playing his wife, & Lou is playing Tony's son Riley looking into camera.

My son has a Tony Hawk bike that he got from McDonald's. He decided to build him a delux sandcastle (with Dad's help). This is the result. Aidan in the background

Signed while he was on tour with Team Rollerblade. It was painful to sit through the whole show. BMXer Matt Hoffman and Davey D from KMEL were there that day as well. Oh, the 90's...

The Search for Animal Chin (1987). A lovingly corny skateboarding video starring the breakout "Bones Brigade" directed and produced by Stacy Peralta, of Powell Peralta Skateboards.
Starring Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Mike McGill, Lance Mountain, Tommy Guerrero. It actually had "a plot!"
A movie I loved in 1987 and recently re-watched on DVD with some hilarious directors cuts and bonus disc of interviews with the original cast giving background. I guess you could sort of call this the "pink flamingos" of skateboard videos. It's so absurd it's great, and they skaters actually try to act. Well, a little.
Film also includes smaller parts by other 80's skaters. San Francisco Scene: Jim Thiebaud, Jesse Martinez, Bryce Kanights, Doug Smith. Bakersfield Scene: Chris Borst, Bobby Reeves, Charlie Dubois, Ray Underhill, Adrian Demain, Donny Griffins, Kevin Lambert. Johnny Rad Party Scene: Mike Vallely, Rodney Mullen, Per Welinder, Natas Kaupas, Arron Murray, Kevin Harris.

A few on-set snapshots from Satsuma and Pumpkin, Bob Monkhouse's last acting role. Tony Hawks co starred.
It was a pilot for a sitcom based on the code breakers of Bletchley Park and was filmed within the original old house on the site. Many thanks to writer and director Jeremy Engler for asking me to join him on the project.

Most impressive thing you've seen this year:Jamie Bestwick's tailwhip flair.
Advice to up-and-coming riders: Go at your own pace and most important, have fun.
Breakdown of how I spend my time:
30% Riding my bike
25% Lifting weights
15% Riding my harley
5% Golfing
3% Relaxing at home
12% Concentrating on nutrition
10% Playing board games with my buddies
Highlights from this past year:
March 2003-getting engaged to my fiance Robin
May 2003-Gold Medal at Global X Games
July 2003-getting my Harley Fatboy
August 2003-Bronze medal at summer X Games
August 2003-Winning 2003 Soul Bowl Series(3rd year in a row)
Not many people have broken their pelvis twice or had 20 concussions. How do you continue pushing yourself in your sport when you know first-hand what the consequences can be?
Life is full of minor setbacks, that's what I consider injuries. You can't let the negatives keep you from chasing your dreams.
At 6-feet, 200 pounds, you could probably double as a bouncer at any freestyle BMX event. How does your size help your riding? Are there some situations where it's a disadvantage?
Having extra muscle on my body really helps prevent injury and helps with recovery time from injury. There have been no set backs because of my size.
Professionally, what is your main focus right now?
Just to keep progressing and having fun.
What was the best thing that happened in freestyle BMX in the past year?
The opening of Woodward West.
What's the last trick you learned? How long were you working on it?
Switch hand to no handed flair. I worked on it for one day and then decided to just go for it during X games.
What do you think can be done about the current "skater vs. biker˜ conflict that's going on in some skateparks right now?
I think all skateboarders and riders should just be happy that they are able to do these sports. There's a lot of unfortunate people out there that can't walk or don't know where they're getting there next meal...I think people need to grow up and stop being so selfish.
How big of a role does music play in inspiring you? What do you like to listen to when you're riding? How about during a contest?
Music can really get me pumped, my favorite band to ride to is Pennywise.
Which impresses you more in the halfpipe, huge straight airs or smaller but very
technical tricks?
Huge straight airs, that's what vert's all about, going big.
What is an average day like for you at Woodward?
Roll in sometime in the afternoon, grab a bite to eat, hang out with some kids, then meet Jamie Bestwick, Chad Kagy, Tom Stober, Jared Souney, and Keith McElhinney at whichever riding spot we're going to shred that day, throw down for a few hours, then head home.
Do you ride differently in front of a huge crowd?
No. i ride the same if there's 2 people or 10,000.
Oops - big fingerprint
My desk space from back in the mid-nineties.
I just got a film scanner so I can now scan my negatives. I'm surprised at how scratched so many of them are, just from lying around in film wallets in a box for years.
I like the results from this scanner and the sofware a lot. I just got the thing on February 21st, so i'm still getting used to it. I imagine I'll be posting a lot more film scans on flickr.com though.
