A floating ball, named after David Bowie's song (1969) about a lonely astronaut who has lost contact with Earth.
The ball is filled - every morning - with just enough helium and air to let it hover in its place. Heat, cold, and people moving around can cause it to drift away. A minuscule thread secures it to the floor.
I had such a good laugh watching this Wild Turkey practicing his move and being completely ignored by the ladies. He did not look like he knew what he was doing. He was walking in slow motion like.

Tom turkeys along Lake Erie, showing off for the ladies. Point Pelee National Park.
The ladies were unimpressed.
I woke to see this visitor in my yard yesterday. He was all puffed up in his glory .. .why? Turns out he took exception to the 2 Canada Geese that come every year and spend a couple of weeks on my pond, bathing, eating, and doing those things that wild Geese do in the springtime before going elsewhere to create their new family. And surprisingly, the Geese gave it up and flew away for the rest of the day. They are back this morning but no Turkey. As far as I could tell Mr Tom was protecting only one hen, who was across the stream out in the field and calmly feeding, but he was doing it to his Utmost! LOL Apologies for the poor quality, but was forced to shoot through a window and one that had a screen on it.
This is a new friend of mine, Tom - "Tom the Gardener", as I call him.
Tom is going to celebrate his 70th birthday soon. He is a veeteran with some great tales to tell, for example, how he helped get NIxon out safely on a trip to Central America many years ago - or - how he was caught by Castro while on liberty near Guantanamo (he was one of he last to get liberty there).
Tom loves Philadelphis and lives close to Glenwood Green Acres, where he tends his garden. He is fairly satisfied with his life and enjoys the simple things, like family, friends and gardening.
We had a wonderful conversation in North Philadelphia.
This photo reflects the hope we have, especially when we weed out the not so good things in life and plant some really good things...like the vegetables he grows to give to the homeless and hungry.
Thanks, Tom.
Much better than a peeping tom, this tom turkey was caught strolling across the backyard in a light, early springtime snowfall pretty much like he owned the place, which of course he does. We share the acreage at the homestead here with all sorts of creatures because, after all, they were here long before we came along. We are the invaders, the last ones in (so far), and maybe even the interlopers, depending on your point of view.
Turkeys, toms and hens, are frequent passersby on the backyard property and, usually, they come in a flock of 7-10 birds who live and roost in local trees just up the lane. They generally squawk to announce their arrival, lest they sneak up on something that would rather not be interrupted. Very thoughtful neighbors, the birds. Among the best actually, although it is certainly a close competition.

This Turkey and his friends were crossing the road. So I stopped and photographed him. Why did the Turkey cross the road? The usual reasons.
In the distance I could see that the cold light of the winter sun was spotlighting the peak of what I think is Tom Meadhoin near Glencoe

London is a very unique place with all types of culture to see. Here is Tom and Jerry on the side of a delivery van. Not sure why they were on it but it reminded me of my youth. We watch violence on tv every saturday with our cartoons. But we never jumped off the building or ran into walls thinking it was ok because a cartoon person did it. This is an Ice Cream truck. Notice Jerry with the bomb in the ice cream cone. I want some of that. :)

On September 18, 1990, I took this shot on the west side of Oconomowoc of an eastbound freight running wrong main past a ballast train just after noon that day. In the photo, Tom Farence (right) stands alongside Ron Kaminen on Soo 2407 with Art Danz standing on the concrete remains of Chaffee Road Bridge. All have given a run-by inspection and have waived goodbye and safe travels to the conductor in Soo caboose #93.
I got to know Tom not in the typical face to face setting, but through email via good friend Dan Longley who knew Tom personally. Tom first helped me with an article I was writing on the Milwaukee Road's September 1968 wreck of the XL Special, and more recently as I work on a new one.
He remembered a stunning amount of details on the XL wreck, having been directly connected to it as he was assigned to bring a crane in to assist with clean-up. To no one's surprise, Tom had his camera in hand that day and shared with me some black and white images he took when he arrived.
As we emailed back and forth, it struck me; at 50 years removed from the 1968 wreck, his memory was simply amazing....names, details, times, places, even things that happened afterwards. His recollections brought a whole new level of storyline depth to my article of which I was ever so grateful.
So, like others here, I wish condolences to Tom's family and pray they find peace in this time of sadness.
Glad to have known you Tom, even if it was in a non-traditional way. Thanks for the memories (literally), the stories, and of course the photography that brought alive the inside workings of Milwaukee Road to the rest of us. Goodbye, Godspeed and rest in peace.
