"I do not believe this darkness will endure." J. R. R. Tolkien

Some more shots of my LEGO model of Eärendil's ship Vingilot from J.R.R. Tolkien's Silmarillion, as built for the Sailors and Boatmen category of the Summer Joust 2023. The ship is mostly inspired by Ted Nasmith's illustrations, but doesn't attempt to capture any of them accurately. Building instructions and further details can be found on Rebrickable.
"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort."
Dusk at Collado Jermoso (near refugio Diego Mella), at about 2100m. After the most gruelling hike I've done in my life (1200m of elevation difference at 4km of distance, with stretches where we had to literally climb using all fours and carefully look for grip and footing) we reached the mountain shelter shortly before sunset.... of which there was no other indication than it's "due time".
Single exposure with some hard ND grads (probably 0.6).

took a number of shots of this convoluted blanket of cloud that day but very few worked... this one's not bad... I focused on the high light above the local supermarket car park and the bird atop... removed a broad white border from the shot, leaving only a white line at the top of the image...
“Remember what Bilbo used to say: 'It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to'.”

Just a little doodle I did on a draft of my undergraduate dissertation. I love the balrog sequence from Lord of the Rings, such an epic scene.

"In winter here no heart could mourn for summer or for spring. No blemish or sickness or deformity could be seen in anything that grew upon the earth. On the land of Lórien, there was no stain.”

[This is the most I've tweaked a photo and then reuploaded it...ever. I hope it doesn't disappoint people who've already fav'd it, but I realized I just wanted to make it more vivid and alive than it was. Sooooo this is the new version of the same image. =) ]
Sorry I haven't uploaded in ages, but here's some example of the stuff to come!

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892 – 1973) was an English writer, poet, philologist, and university professor who is best known as the author of the classic high-fantasy works The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion.
Tolkien had the name Lúthien engraved on Edith's tombstone at Wolvercote Cemetery, Oxford. When Tolkien died 21 months later on 2 September 1973, at the age of 81, he was buried in the same grave, with Beren added to his name.
In Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium, Lúthien was the most beautiful of all the Children of Ilúvatar, and forsook her immortality for her love of the mortal warrior Beren. After Beren was captured by the forces of the Dark Lord Morgoth, Lúthien rode to his rescue upon the talking wolfhound Huan. Ultimately, when Beren was slain in battle against the demonic wolf Carcharoth, Lúthien, like Orpheus, approached the Valar, the angelic order of beings placed in charge of the world by Eru (God), and persuaded them to restore her beloved to life.

Dating from 1891 this wonderful small sculpted figure by Jean Carriès is the spitting image of a certain cinematic Gollum don't you think? Surely this was a possible inspirational jump?

We'll never really know, but it's widely rumoured that the North door to St. Edward’s Church inspired Tolkien's fantasy world. The two ancient yew trees on either side of the door could easily have been the inspiration for the Door of Durin, the gateway to the elven kingdom of Moria.

My love of music began with three albums- and this was one of those albums. I remember buying this record when I was in kindergarten, and I would listen to the story and songs over and over again (I’m sure my mother loved that it kept be busy!).
I developed a love of Tolkien at an early age (the inspiration behind my journal pages), and the songs in here helped me develop a love of music as well. And now it has a special place on my studio wall to remind me.
