This is actually raw French toast. My daughter made French toast for breakfast; hmmm... so good. These are some of the raw materials.

One of the things which came home with me from England.

Super luxurious kaya toast at the Shangri-La Hotel in Orchard. $12 bucks and worth it. Butter tasted like a fine French butter, kaya was perfect, and two different kinds of bread.

For those not familiar with this, kaya toast is a traditional Singaporean breakfast, usually served with a poached egg and coffee or tea. Kaya is a type of local jam made with fragrant pandan leaves, palm sugar and egg. Making it is an art form and there are many varieties of it across Southeast Asia. I fell in love with it when I first arrived here and enjoy it quite often.

Toast Hawaii oder Hawaii-Toast ist ein mit Schinken, Ananas und Käse belegter, überbackener Toast, der in Westdeutschland in den 1950er Jahren populär wurde.

Bis in die 1970er Jahre gehörte der Toast Hawaii zum wöchentlichen Speiseplan vieler Familien und wurde in den 1980er Jahren beliebtes Gericht in Kneipen, für Partykeller und Kegelbahnen.

In der Mischung aus „Provinz und zugleich … Extravaganz“ zeige sich der „Ausdruck eines Lebensgefühls ganzer Generationen“: Südfrüchte aus der Konserve hätten für deren Verfügbarkeit unabhängig vom Klima gestanden, das Toastbrot für Amerika, der Kochschinken für Bürgerlichkeit.

Luxus

Eine Konserven Dose Ananas von Edeka gab es nicht alle Tage.

Edeka wirbt im Namen für die Einfuhr von weit her, Kolonialwaren.

Der Toast Hawaii brachte einen „Hauch von Exotik“ in den Alltag und gehörte damit zum demonstrativen Konsum der Nachkriegszeit in Deutschland.

EdK für Einkaufsgenossenschaften deutscher Kolonialwaren- und Lebensmittel-Einzelhändler.

Laut der Historikerin Petra Foede steht das Gericht auch für die Abwendung von traditionellen Magenfüllern wie Eintopf oder Klößen.
