Captured from my back garden in Rochdale, UK on Friday night the 10th of May 2024.
All images were captured using a Canon 1100D with an 18-55mm basic kit lens.
14 second exposures at ISO800 controlled with a Neewer intervalometer.
I was afraid this night was a bust for night sky photography - too many clouds with not much hope for clearing. But it was my last chance, my last night on my red rock loop trip and the crescent moon was getting bigger by the day. So I went for it. The ranger told me if I went a few hundred yards down the Fairyland Canyon trail, I'd have dark, no city lights. Well, that trail was only a few feet wide and a stumble or misstep would send me home to my maker, so I opted to set up at the edge of the overlook. That meant I could almost see my camera from the comfort of my car, so I sat and caught up on my Flickr friends with my Ipad. I checked on the camera after an hour or so and the clouds had actually cleared and things were looking up. I let it go for almost 3 hours, in fact, as I went to check on it, the card filled up and showed me the last shot on the LCD - a glorious Milky Way had risen. I actually changed cards then and did a few more stills. Absolutely fabulous.
This time-lapse starts about an hour after sundown and the sky continues to get darker as it goes. You can see about 4000 airplanes and some nearby towns in the distance, Tropic to the left, and probably Cannonville further in the distance, with some highway lights as well. Which brings up a point about how we must work for and cherish our dark if we hope to experience the glory of a night sky. Our national parks, as some of the last bastions of the dark, are pushing the importance of this.
Also of note as you watch, I believe you can see the moonlight roll up toward the horizon, about midway through, as the moon is filtered through the trees behind me and finally sets out of sight. The full treat comes toward the very end, as you can literally see the Milky Way rise above the town lights. Just simply thrilling, and I thought it was going to be a bust and almost packed it up.

Here in Toolik Lake the Sun did rise above the horizon today, just not high enough to make it over the mountains of the Brooks Range to the south. The Sun got about half a degree above the horizon before it set again, while the mountains are about 1.5 degrees high. The whole day lasted about 2 hours. I'm counting this as my first day where the Sun didn't rise.
Since videos are now possible on flickr, I couldn't resist to upload one that I made about a year ago. It is a timelapse made with my Ixus Wireless camera. The IXUS Wireless is great for such jobs, as you can create intervall shots from a computer connected over Wireless to the camera. So this video is a series of still frames that were taken in intervalls of about 10 seconds.
Anyway don't worry I won't be posting a daily video. :))
Photos are still my main passion and producing videos is a bit more work than shooting a photo.
The video has no soundtrack!
At first I was a bit skeptical when I read that flickr is going to allow videos too, however when I read in the rules that a video cannot be longer than 90 seconds and I could agree with that as in that way flickr is not going to become another "MTV on Demand Service" like YouTube with a huge amount of copyrighted material illegally uploaded and distributed.

I did this timelapse with Time Lapse Asembler, a free software for Mac. But I cann't choose less than 15fps. If anybody could tell me another software where I can choose the number of pictures per second please.
Those are 65 pictures of 30sec.

This is our first attempt on TimeLapse.
750 shoots per sequence, 1 every 5 seconds.
24fps is about 30s of video.
Shot with Nikon D7000 18mm F16 1/60 and using interval trigger and fine jpeg.
Postproduction using Lightroom 5 and LRTimelapse 3.1 Pro.
Production time about 6h.

A timeplase experiment using Canon SX10 and CHDK.
Setup:
Set the candles, camera on a tripod with CHDK loaded with Timelapse script
Set 5 sec interval for the shots.
Hit shutter and grab a coffee.
Process frames in Picasa to get the movie.
I shot 1.3s exposures at F8, ISO400 for 8 minutes with an interval of 2s so would be 8x30 = 240 images. Run in 'electronic shutter' mode on D850 to save shutter clicks. Made as a 4k time-lapse in-camera. All I needed to do was downsize with Quicktime to make it possible to upload to Flickr. So easy!
One of the best things about allowing the camera to make the time-lapse in electronic shutter mode is that the lens aperture blades are not opened & closed between each shot. This eliminates 'flicker' due to inaccurate aperture setting. I also allowed the camera to do exposure smoothing - although I have no idea whether that actually makes any difference when you pre-lock all exposure parameters as I did here: yes I used manual mode with all exposure parameters locked so that the scene would darken naturally as the light faded (evening to night).
1.3s chosen as duration to make for a nice smooth time-lapse .. pause it anywhere you like and you can see the light-trails thanks to 1.3s; 2s interval to provide more than enough time for the camera to shoot 1.3s; 8 minutes = a reasonable time for a couple of traffic-light sequences.
I have not used post-production software to straighten vertical lines - although there is enough space to do so. Deliberately pointed camera sky-ward because the sky is much more interesting than the grass.
Any comments would be welcome. This is an area of photography I knew far too little about and am still learning!
