Out of curiosity I scrolled through lots of pictures of Pacific coast crabs, and nothing really looked like this guy. I got a bit overwhelmed over just how many there were. Rock crabs were kinda close but his "face" was different. If anyone has an ID I would be grateful!
Spotted this one in the tide pools around North Point, near Morro Bay, ca.
At minus tide,

In case the perspective is difficult to understand: the water line is just above the urchins, an oblique line across the top of the photo, so everything below the upper white rocks is underwater. The tidepool was motionless while the tide was out.
As the water rushed over a Giant Green Anemone and several kinds of coralline algae at minus tide.

That's a snap! I forgot to mention that, if you want to get to the bluffs when tidepools show signs of life, you have to head south and climb over those logs. Then you have to take a boat (if anyone's got one and willing to take you) to the bluffs. And that's what we did.
At my favorite place on the California coast, Pescadero State Beach. Between Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz, California.
This was taken at Pu'uhonua Honaunau or Place of Refuge on the Big Island of Hawai'i.
Back in the day lawbreakers had one chance to escape the death penalty: Reach the area's place of refuge before being caught, then all was forgiven.
They had great tidepools.
Just because I thought it looked kind of cool.

Walk along the shore and collect free seashells. Use mouselook to hunt for especially rare ones. See crabs, starfish and seahorses in the tidepools.
An evening storm lays in over the Kapoho Tidepools near Pahoa on the eastern tip of Hawai'i. The crystal clear lava ponds are teeming with fish, urchins, coral, jellyfish, crabs, and all manner of marine life.
On the horizon, the last light of day breaks gently through the clouds. It was so quiet and peaceful here. You don't forget a place with this much zen.

[Update, the 2018 Kilauea eruption buried this entire neighborhood, including the famous tidepools, under a giant lava flow. Most of the homes here were destroyed.]
This was the only tidepool that I’d seen on this trip to the beach that the water was not crystal clear. What I saw in it I immediately thought of the painting The Scream by Munch.
There was no wind, not even a slight breeze to ripple the water surface. Soft light, sharp focus. Dawn light, reflected colours. Simplicity!
