Turn around from the view of Otter Rock State Beach to this great view of the tide pools by Otter Point.

Sea Anemones and Crabs were my Companions on a Delightful visit to the Tide Pools at Corona Del Mar, California.

As excited children scurried from one pool to another shrieking at the sight of colorful sea life, this old guy was practically on hands and knees scrambling back to safety from the advancing tide. Do it while you can... Life is Good : )

A few more from my visit to Yachats last week. Loved those low-tide sand ripples.

I selected just the rock in the tidepool and lightened it a bit, also jacking up the color just a tad, to make it stand out. The sky is then darkened a bit using just the Enhancer tool in Photomatix, where the foreground uses some adjustments in the Contrast Optimizer tool.

It almost looks like a composite, where the tidepool rock is from another photo dropped into this one, but it's not. This is another of my views with the camera as low to the sand as I can get it, to give lots of detail to the foreground subjects, like the tidepool rock.

Somewhere along the Mendocino Sonoma County coast. All the beauty of Big Sur without all the tourists.

After a wave, water drains off the rocks leaving small tidepools.

Rocks, shells, hermit crabs, mussels, snails, seaweed. They all add up to the adventures of investigating tidepools at Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, just north of Half Moon Bay, California.

From The Washington Trails Association:

There’s nothing like a lazy beach stroll — and nothing quite like wandering on the spectacularly scenic Olympic Coast.

This hike begins at the Rialto Beach parking area. Your trail is the beach itself and the two mile walk to Hole-in-the-Wall is filled with attractions. Look south to the forested James and Little James islands, while waves crash over Gunsight Rock and numerous offshore sea stacks. Heading north on the beach, walk over sand, rock and driftwood.

Along the way, watch for all manner of wildlife: spy whales, sea lions and otters offshore, while a variety of seabirds drift overhead, and eagles perch in the forest upslope. After a mile, cross Ellen Creek; there may be a log crossing, or you may have to get your feet wet. Continue northward, with Hole-in-the-Wall soon coming into view.

If the tide is out, scramble through the rocky arch and explore the adjacent tide pools, teeming with small oceanic critters. If the tide is in, use the overland trail above the arch and take in panoramic views southward over this picturesque scene.

Kinda hard to tell because the water is so clear, but this really is a tidepool.

One of the attractions about Seaside is the tide pools. Once a year, in winter, we have very low tides that expose pools that are created by the tidal flux. People come from all around to see creatures stranded in pools, waiting for the tide to rise again and wash them away. So each year I add to my series "Exploring the Tide Pools" where I capture a small slice of life with people interacting with this natural wonder.

A minus 3.2 tide just before noon today at the Titlow Park lagoon outflow. Young and old were enjoying the hunt. This is the lowest I have ever seen it.

Cruisin' down the Mendocino County coastline, I found this large tidepool near the Point Arena Lighthouse, the ocean still a bit restless after a passing storm.

One of the things I like most about this part of the California coast is, it has all the beauty of the Big Sur coast without all the tourists and RVs in the way.

Weston Beach, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve

Monterey, CA

Millions of years of tides and wave action have eroded the rock at Weston Beach in Point Lobos State Natural Reserve into beautiful shapes and tiny channels and miniature tidepools. This was scanned from a slide dated 1989.
