This shot was actually something of an accident. See, I had a rim light and a key light set up, but my key light batteries were dying, so it failed to fire several times (not fault of the Cactus V4s, mind you). With just the rim light, though, this background was much more dynamic and the entire shot was far more interesting. That's what these kinds of projects are about, right? Happy mistakes and fun discoveries.

This started many weeks ago and just ended yesterday. I shot a particularly dramatic and varied formation of well-lit clouds one afternoon and just kept that shot around for several months. Just yesterday I shot this door, and realized it these clouds would be the perfect complement. The biggest challenge of this piece was deciding on something... more for the window area. I choose here to explore the metaphor of a door not just as a literal threshold, but also in this context, a threshold for an entry into my thinking on process and perception — hence, the text being lifted directly from the "about" section of my site.

Threshold, designed by Spanish sculptor Robert Llimos, was installed at Underground Atlanta's Fountains Plaza in 1996. The sculpture, an expressionist human figure swabbed with colored strips stepping and looking through a rectangular frame, was commissioned by the Cultural Legacy Initiative, which brought major permanent works of art to Atlanta from Barcelona--the 1992 Summer Olympic City--as an Olympic cultural exchange.

Threshold; De Bosuil;

My daily morning view. Blackie waiting impatiently till I open that door for him. The garden is his playground. #elevatetheeveryday #picturebpc #apeknapie #acatslife #focusingonlife #ourcollectiveplayground #shuttersister #mortalmuses

Threshold; De Bosuil;

“This body is not me, I am not caught in this body.

I am life without boundaries.

I have never been born, and I shall never die.

Look at the ocean and the sky filled with stars,

manifestations of my wondrous true mind.

Since before time, I have been free.

Birth and death are only doors through which we pass,

sacred thresholds on our journey.

Birth and death are just a game of hide and seek.

So laugh with me,

hold my hand,

let us say goodbye,

say goodbye, to meet again soon.

We meet today.

We will meet again tomorrow.

We will meet at the source at every moment.

We meet each other in all forms of life.”
