Threads I'm using on a project right now.

Old Watermen's Walk, City of London

The threads that connect us to the world are our survival strategy. They are created and destroyed by us and by others. Fragile like the threads that the spider weaves, they are the measure of vulnerability, persistence, the entanglement of life. And in the poetic reflection on the self, the will, and the world, we will find this fragility in another perfect poem by Carlos Queiroz (1907-1949) Aranha, a masterpiece of Portuguese poetry.

Macro Mondays - Needle and Thread - 3/16/20

Pastel for Macro Mondays

Puffins were on the ledge directly below one of the viewing stations - close enough for shots but difficult to get an angle. I leaned out and over, trying not to give in to vertigo and waiting for gusts to blow vegetation out of my shot!

... used in the making of both Yubinuki (small rings) and Temari balls. Some of the threads that were used in their making!

There's more about the rings, and Laurie, who made them for me by clicking through to the image in the first comment field.

This was a little bonus. During the latter part of our descent from Wild Boar Fell the whine of a pair of 158 units could be heard making their way uphill towards the nearby summit of His Gill. 158 870 and 158 794 form the 2H93 Carlisle to Leeds service.

Week 10 of 52 weeks challenge

In the Tulsa Botanic Garden...

Yes, as you can see, "Bedford Drab" really was the name of a Dewhurst Sylko Cotton thread. Only the British could make drab sound so elegant!

When it was my birthday a few months ago, a very dear friend who enjoys photography as much as I do, and knows that I collect beautiful and vintage pieces, gave me a wonderful selection of antique ribbons, buttons, buckles, lace and other fine notions. She also gave me three follow up tins of similar delightful gifts for Christmas.

Those wonderful gifts are what has inspired me to create this series of "Embroider my World" images featuring my vintage bobbin collection. In this case, the wonderfully delicate vintage laces from the 1930s comes from my own collection of antique notions. I have accessorised them on a 1930s embroidered tablecloth with a Dewhurst's Sylko Sand reel of cotton and a Bedford Drab reel of cotton which date from between 1938 and 1954.

Belle Vue Mill, commonly known as Dewhurst’s, was built by Thomas Dewhurst in 1828. It opened in 1829 as John Dewhurst & Sons and was one of Skipton’s largest spinning and weaving mills. The mill’s position next to the Leeds Liverpool Canal meant that raw cotton could be shipped in by boats from Liverpool. Finished goods would then be sent back the same way ready for distribution. Coal to power the machine’s steam engines was also delivered by barge. In 1897 Dewhurst’s was bought by the English Sewing Cotton Co. It continued to produce Sylko, one of the mill’s most famous products. It was produced in over 500 colours and sold throughout the world. Sylko cottons are still available at haberdashers today.

Humankind has not woven the web of life.

We are but one thread within in.

Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves.

All things are bound together. All things connect.

For 'Macro Mondays' theme of 'Complementary Colours'.

A very obvious subject for this weeks theme.

No trouble in finding the the reels of thread - too much choice really when I looked one of M's collections.

The 'orange' is one of Dewhurst's TRYLCO terylene threads and is described as 'Flame' coloured.

The 'blue-green' is a Coats' DRIMA polyester thread of no specified colour.

The needle - the bigest I could find cos I had to thread it, has obviously seen better days.

And I have put everything back where I think I found it - there will be trouble if I haven't. !!
