#2142 - 2013 Day 315: Paying homage to a hero of mine, Philip Lynott. His statue in Dublin was hidden behind a range rover parked up on the pedestrian street, a tow-away offence if ever there was one. So my photographs of Phil were necessarily close ...

When a genius dies young it is as if all that greatness is bottled up in a moment, preserved for ever but always with sadness and a feeling that we will never know how much more wonderful music never emerged. Still miss you Philo ...

I came across two ‘paint-a-box’ tributes to Phil Lynott last weekend. This is one of them and unfortunately I do not know the name of the artist responsible for this one.

“Dublin Canvas uses traffic light control boxes as platforms to showcase artwork. These boxes, previously designed to go unnoticed now become canvases for artists to exhibit their artwork to the public.”

I scanned these from the original negatives which I recently found, so much better than the pictures I got at the time most of which had a red cast to them. This was the 4th and last time I saw the band

From Thin Lizzy museum

Thin Lizzy, led by the charismatic Phil Lynott, delivered electrifying performances at two iconic Irish venues: the RDS in Dublin and Slane Castle. At the RDS, they captivated fans with their raw energy and signature blend of hard rock and soulful ballads, showcasing hits like "The Boys Are Back in Town." In Slane, amidst the historic castle setting, Thin Lizzy played to a massive crowd, creating an unforgettable rock spectacle that solidified their legendary status in Ireland's music history. Both venues remain etched in rock lore as pivotal moments in the band's live legacy.

If you ever need to see a human put 110% into his job, find out where Tommy Aldridge is playing and go. This is from Columbus Percussion's Drum Daze 2009.

Anyone who ever went to rock club in the 1970's (or later) will recognise this sort of scene, I was sitting on top of the band's equipment flight cases at the time not too far from the RH PA stack. Things got quite loud in those days :- ) When you saw a row of Marshall heads stacked on multiple speaker cabs you knew you were in for ear bashing (even if some of them were spares.....).

This is JB's Club, King Street Dudley, the band "Wild Horses" the date 16/12/78.

The line up at the time was Brian Robertson (Guitar) Jimmy Bain (Bass) and Dixie Lea(Drums), Neil Carter(Guitar), Thanks to Lee Jones for clarifying the line up :-)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Group Art Show

Matt Furie, Le Merde, and Johnny Ryan at GRSF, April 17, 2010 - May 12, 2010

Reception: Saturday, April 17, 6:30 pm - 10:00 pm

Giant Robot is proud to present The Boys Are Back in Town, a group art show featuring new works by Matt Furie, Le Merde, and Johnny Ryan.

Matt Furie creates richly detailed and hyper colored illustrations and paintings that reflect the creative cross breeding of The Neverending Story and the unrestrained imagination of The Muppet Show. For this show, he is leaning less on the eye-straining detail of Bernie Wrightson and more on the simplicity and tweaked humor of the ALF Saturday morning cartoon series. For this show, he is contributing 50 pieces (including minis, floating heads, and POGs) related to his self-published Boy's Club comic, as well as "riffs on the characters of Johnny and Le Merde."

Le Merde has gained a rabid following in the limited-edition figure scene with his molten and oozing but cute style. Often lost in the shadows of his sculptural work are the Portland artist’s equally colorful paintings, which also reference a loving appreciation of underground comix, Japanese horror manga, and rock ‘n’ roll. He is preparing 50 pieces of cel and ink on watercolor paper, focusing on the "three Gs": ghosts, ghouls, and gods.

Johnny Ryan is best known for his self-published title Angry Youth Comix, which was picked up by Fantagraphics Books in 2000. His crude yet totally polished and undeniably funny illustrations reveal both a ruthless-but-loving knowledge of the topics that he slays (superhero comics, science fiction, Ernie Bushmiller, the Holocaust) and a seemingly effortless mastery of linework and energy. He promises 50 pieces of "awesome shit."

Giant Robot was born as a Los Angeles-based magazine about Asian, Asian-American, and new hybrid culture in 1994, but has evolved into a full-service pop culture provider with shops and galleries in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York City, as well as an online equivalent.

A reception featuring many of the artists will be held from 6:30 - 10:00 on Saturday, April 17. For more information about the artists, GRSF, or Giant Robot magazine, please contact:
