There are a few distinct signs that nature sends to herald the month of August. Almost on the very first day, I heard crickets singing in my garden while sipping an early morning coffee on our front porch. Then there are my tall Tree Lilies that bloom with a burst of fresh white at my back deck. These Lilies were given to me by my sister a few years ago. So when they bloom they trigger memories of that wonderful visit we had. Since I have captured these blooms many times, I decided to try a different approach. I used in camera multiple exposures to capture this with 3 images. Then I turned the image a quarter turn to get this composition.
There is a lot to see in the friendly Belgian Lier in the province of Antwerp. The city park is definitely worth a visit. In May of this year I enjoyed a long walk through Lier and the nature in the park is very colorful. This bridge is a work of art in itself and many people stop to look at the beautiful landscape where the colors of nature make the white bridge even more beautiful.
There is so much to say
With complicated reasons
And the varieties of way
In new and yearly seasons
We have but a little while
To say our thoughts and mind
To walk the distant mile
Before those hours are behind
Blessed are the interrelations
Of every village and tree
There is so much graduation
In there thoroughly to see
Where brook is flowing freely
Breezing whispering leaves
Water streams colors steely
The greenery fields and sleeve.

There will always be brighter days ahead. Sometimes I get too focused on the now, and see only the darkness. Today for instance, the stock market is down; the Omicron variant is causing another winter Covid scare; the politics in Washington is rancorous; rumors of wars, rumors of this, rumors of that. And yet, brighter days will surely come again. Back in August of 2015, the sun was shining brightly on the Bean in Chicago. It may be dark outside now, but the sun will surely shine again.

Yesterday dawned very foggy so I grabbed my camera for a quick walk around the wetlands before starting work. The phrase pea soup described the gritty polluted air in London during the winters. Our air is not quite so polluted but there is a fair number of wood burning stoves with particulate matter. (We have one too). But there was much beauty walking in the quiet fog at Frog Hollow.
There is nothing better than having a camera at a boring party :-)

It was a foggy morning here today and I couldn’t resist trying to capture some of the mood. This shot was looking down my driveway where a glimpse of the first rays of dawn were attempting to break the gloom.

"in pitch dark i go walking in your landscape.
broken branches trip me as i speak.
just because you feel it doesnt mean it's there.
just because you feel it doesnt mean it's there.
there's always a siren
singing you to shipwreck.
(don't reach out, don't reach out)
steer away from these rocks
we'd be a walking disaster.
(don't reach out, don't reach out)
just because you feel it doesn't mean it's there.
(there's someone on your shoulder)
just because you feel it doesn't mean it's there.
(there's someone on your shoulder)
there there
why so green and lonely?
heaven sent you to me.
we are accidents
waiting waiting to happen.
we are accidents
waiting waiting to happen."

backstory.
my mom died 37 years ago. when my dad decided to allow her things to be cleared out before he remarried, my sister went through mama's things and decided who should get what. she took all the diamond jewelry and sent me some garnets which I had never seen. I already had an old rocking chair. after my dad died I would get his desk.
at the first of this year, I read a story in the New Yorker about a company in NYC that takes old heirloom jewelry which has been lying in jewelry boxes unused and makes pieces more relevant to the times. [spurjewelry.com/pages/faqs-1] I thought of all those garnets. so I emailed the company and scheduled a phone conference. it took over a month just to get the phone appointment. once I talked with the jewelry designer and sent her photos of what I had, I was sent a prepaid insured box in which to send the jewelry. meanwhile the designers were drawing up choices for me. I sent the box off to NYC after I chose which design I wanted.
[picture of my jewelry in comments below. the circle pin is mine, the gold band was my wedding ring from my first marriage. the rest was my mom's. any and all gold could be melted down to put into my ring and I would receive a credit]
that was 3 months ago.
today a package came in the mail with my new ring and the leftover stones. lots of leftovers.
btw, the only reason I could afford this ring was a gift of $$ from my elder son and his partner. If I had more money I would use up those stones in another ring, but not for now.
I have the ring on tonight and it's beautiful. my mom gave me her diamond earrings before she died. they weren't diamonds, but who cares. the ring has her earrings on the top and is encircled with the garnets.
the designer was wonderful to work with and it was an exciting experience.
happy things.
pardon my wrinkly arthritic hands, they are old working hands, just like my grandma's.

➤ Build your image around a common household object that is small enough to fit in a microwave (spoon, light bulb, vase, towel, salt shaker, TV remote, bar of soap, mug, flashlight, etc., etc., etc.).
➤ Let this object be the inspiration for the whole image, which must have either a comedic, dramatic, tragic or melodramatic overtone.
➤ Place your object in or on a background that’s unexpected. In other words, don’t depict a pillow on a chair in a living room. The background could be as diverse as a simple texture or an urban night scene.

There always seems to be seven to ten of these around with the Mallards and Wood Duck this year. They are very photogenic but they also seem to sense when we are in the observation blinds and motor to the middle of the pond. Not this afternoon... landing mallards seem to drive them down to the east blind where I am sitting quietly… when they are close, I jump up and ambush them! Ha! Thanks Mallards! This one is a very comely female, next I need to capture a handsome male!
