FLUFFY . . the name given to me
I cannot think why
but someone was kind
and looked into my eyes
I looked into theirs
and what a surprise
they saw a softness
deep inside . . .
but, that comes
as no surprise :-)
my feathers are soft
fine cushions would make
but oh my for goodness sake
I'm an OWL oh yes I am
soft for a moment and
oh dear then !
if I'm hungry as often I am
I will catch you and eat you
as quick as I can !!!
Poem from my dear friend Bev www.flickr.com/photos/beverleyplaya/
Can't wait to see Alabama 3 tonight in Bristol, and this is a favourite of theirs.. This title has little connection with the photo, apart from the oncoming storm, and I needed cover ( a cave in this instance ). There's always somewhere to shelter if you look hard enough.
A lovely evening spent at Cwm Nash, watching the tide drop and the sun set slowly, with beautiful shore platforms all around. We're off to see Toots and the Maytals tonight, which should be great , so it has to be a track of theirs, and Pressure Drop, always gives good photography so that's fine.
Just into the edge of twilight, serenity descends to those waiting still for it. I had attempted to race the sun, to capture the last fleeting moments of the day, the gorgeous sunset over the smokies, but it was not to be this day. Instead I arrived on scene late, as I knew I likely would. So I stubbornly setup my camera as the other photographers laughed, breaking theirs down and driving off. I was a fool on the roadside, looking for what was already gone. Yet, there amongst the evening light, the fall air chilling my hands fast, the mountains gave me a small gift. Twilight can be grand indeed, for those who are willing to stop and look.

Family isn’t always blood. It’s the people in your life who want you in theirs; the ones who accept you for who you are. The ones who would do anything to see you smile and who Love You no matter what.
A little reflection of family. My biological family lives hundreds of miles away and I don’t see or hear much from them. On the outside things always appeared to be family one could dream of. But when you are the black sheep of the family, you are often made to feel like you don’t belong or aren’t good enough. You find yourself struggling through childhood and adulthood fighting to make those people proud, but repeatedly unable to only to be reminded of all the ways you have messed up your life.
Logging onto Second Life is everyone’s escape. What their escape from will vary from one person to the next. Whether is just a mental escape from normal day-to-day life or an escape from a world where your body is unable to function in society’s called normalcy to a way to reach out to make new friends new connections. Second Life has been my escape in different ways over the years.
One of my greatest treasures of SL is the one person who has become my very best friend and my baby sister, Avery. I laugh a great deal because realistically she is old enough to be my daughter. But regardless, this blondie is my sister. We meet by chance through a guy I was seeing, she was his sister. Chance happenings caused her to come live on our land. It was during this time our bond grew, and grew, and grew. Before long we were glued at the hip. So much so that when the relationship didn’t work out, she disowned him as a brother and adopted me as her sister.
Though I’m in an amazing relationship now with two people who I consider my best friend and who I do absolutely anything for, my relationship with my sister will last and forever be stronger. It has been 3 years since she came into my life. And up until just a few months ago, that temporary living arrangement turned into a permanent one and one I will always cherish. We have seen each other through some major highs and major lows and everything in between. We know each other at times better than we know ourselves. No matter what we do, how bad we may mess up in this thing called life I know I can count on her to be there.

The title is taken from the wonderful Thomas Hardy [1840-1928] novel which was set in Dorset, where Hardy came from. It was made into a very successful film but my favourite was the 1967 version with Julie Christie and Alan Bates. Is it any wonder that Hardy was inspired to write such amazing classics, being surrounded by the stunning Dorset countryside.
Here is a link to some information about him which is very interesting.

Assateague's wild horses are well known, even to many people who have never been to the island. The "wild" horses on Assateague are actually feral animals, meaning that they are descendants of domestic animals that have reverted to a wild state. Horses tough enough to survive the scorching heat, abundant mosquitoes, stormy weather and poor quality food found on this remote, windswept barrier island have formed a unique wild horse society. Enjoy their beauty from a distance, and you can help make sure these extraordinary wild horses will continue to thrive on Assateague Island.
Local folklore describes the Assateague horses as survivors of a shipwreck off the Virginia coast. While this dramatic tale of struggle and survival is popular, there are no records yet that confirm it. The most plausible explanation is that they are the descendants of horses that were brought to barrier islands like Assateague in the late 17th century by mainland owners to avoid fencing laws and taxation of livestock.
The horses are split into two main herds, one on the Virginia side and one on the Maryland side of Assateague. They are separated by a fence at the Virginia/Maryland State line. These herds have divided themselves into bands of two to twelve animals and each band occupies a home range. The National Park Service manages the Maryland herd. The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company owns and manages the Virginia herd, which is allowed to graze on Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, through a special use permit issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The permit restricts the size of the herd to approximately 150 adult animals in order to protect the other natural resources of the wildlife refuge. It is the Virginia herd which is often referred to as the "Chincoteague" ponies.
Assateague's horses are beautiful, tough, and wild. They have learned to survive in a harsh environment. Feeding and/or petting them is detrimental to both visitors and horses. Horses can get sick from human food. Those that learn to come up to the road to beg for food are often hit and killed by cars. Visitors are kicked, bitten and knocked down every year as a direct result of getting too close to the wild horses. Treating wild horses like tame animals takes away the wildness that makes them special. Protect your family by respecting theirs. Give the horses the space they need to be wild.
There are few places in the United States where you can view wild horses. Due to their complex social structure the Assateague horses display a wide range of unique behaviors. Take advantage of the opportunity to view these horses in a natural habitat. With careful management, the wild horses will continue to thrive on Assateague Island and provide enjoyment to thousands of nature enthusiasts, photographers, and people who just love horses!

Dear Flickr friends: First, and foremost, thank you for all the kind words of support and encouragement on my last post. They meant a lot to me.
Update: Although I’m still struggling w/severe back, shoulder, & neck pain, I try to keep my spirits up. The last few days have helped with beautiful, warm and sunny days. I think Spring may have arrived earlier than anticipated.
And hot off the presses, it seems that I've found a solution to my camera problem. I’ve been in contact w/a couple of people trying to sell theirs & allowed me to shoot w/them for a few days. One of them even offered me the option to pay him in installments... which I've accepted. So, without further ado... It seems that I am BACK! 😊🎉

Once again, they have made their way across the Sahara Desert to return to their European breeding grounds. Soon that familiar sound of theirs will be echoing in our ears.
This of course is Colin who, much to the delight of photographers, makes his way to Thursley Common, Surrey each year. Rather than be phased by lens at the ready, in typical cuckoo-like manner he willingly takes up the offer of mealworms. Much like Albert the albatross, who for his third summer has returned to Bempton Cliffs, Colin has become something of celebrity.
Wishing you a great week.
Serenity is maintaining a sense of inner peace even in difficult situations. We gain serenity by accepting the things we cannot change and focusing our energy where we can make a difference.
Fear, anger or desire can create a sense of urgency that triggers us to react impulsively. When this happens, we risk undermining our goals, damaging relationships--even violating our deepest values. By contrast, when we cultivate serenity, we don’t fear our emotions, but we do keep them in balance. We govern ourselves rather than being ruled by external circumstances and our feelings about them.
Meditative practices, contemplation, physical exercise and self-regulation skills all can help us to maintain a serene, peaceful state of mind. This mental state in turn frees us to live thoughtfully and intentionally. When we hold onto our own sense of serenity, we help others to keep theirs.

List of Bands

The Animals are an English rhythm and blues and rock band, formed in Newcastle upon Tyne in the early 1960s. The band moved to London upon finding fame in 1964. They were dubbed "animals" reportedly because of their wild stage act, and the name stuck.
The Animals band — formed originally as the Alan Price Combo — were one of several British rhythms and blues bands touring the United States in the early 1960s, distinguished mainly by their authenticity and the scarifying, Deltaesque lead vocals of Eric Burdon.
The same year the Beatles invaded America, the Animals were not far behind — but this five-piece of blues-rock upstarts delivered a more authentic, cerebral, white R&B than anything the Merseybeat bands were capable of. Indeed, it was a cover of a Leadbelly standard "House of the Rising Sun" that gave them their first transatlantic smash.
Formed in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, England in 1962 when lead singer Burdon joined the Alan Price Rhythm and Blues Combo with John Steel on drums, Bryan "Chas" Chandler on bass, and Hilton Valentine on guitar. Burdon contributes the renaming to the Animals to a group of friends the band used to hang out with, notably in honor of one of those friends, "Animal" Hogg.
Due in part to Beatlemania at the time, the band relocated to London in 1964 to join in the beat-boom takeover of the music scene there. This movement became known as the British Invasion, and the Animals landed right at the forefront of that wave of new British artists invading American culture.
"House of the Rising Sun" is by far their most popular and therefore heard most in TV and movies, whether in a cover version by a character in "Mad Men" or during karaoke in the series "Girls" or as the soundtrack to Sharon Stone's final descent into drug madness in the classic Scorsese film Casino. The track became known as one of the first folk-rock hit in the states.
My two favorite songs of theirs:

Toying a little with the grid , the pixels since I feel at times that SL has at times an urge to crawl out that screen of mine.
I hear it a lot that people say how SL is SL and rl is rl... However I find such a thing very hard to say. We make friends , we care , we share , we laugh and feel sad..those things can't really be separated and so the feelings we have behind our avatar is very very real.
I also would like to add to this picture that I support all the photographers and artist on Flickr. I see at times how people take your work , use it as theirs and steal..It's sad to see because we all put our heart and love in each picture we make and people should respect that..not abuse.
Still , it's nice to see how we stand up for each other , sooth one another and making it us all a little connected somehow.
We all share our fantasy , our work , inspiration and admiration..
Screw those who make abuse of our skills and work but hugs and cheers for our lovely followers , our friends and muses.

Yellow Crowned Night Heron
Along the Atlantic Ocean
Explored
There were actually a pair with a juvenile - I'll post a full body photo below in the comments - you can see the ocean in the background in that photo.
From 'Birdist Rule #115: Learn to Identify and Differentiate Night-Herons' by Nicholas Lund -
Their name makes them sound like a team of minor-league Marvel superheroes: The Night-Herons! They sit motionless in the shadows, not making a sound. They wait for unsuspecting criminals to come close, and then they . . . STRIKE!
I dunno. Maybe waiting around for criminals to walk by isn’t the most impressive super power. It is a great way to catch fish, though, and it’s a technique employed by these very cool birds you might have seen around but weren’t sure how to identify.
Our two species of night-heron, the Black-crowned Night-Heron and the Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, belong to a family of large wading birds that also includes the familiar Great Blue Heron and the cryptic bitterns. Each of these birds feeds in about the same way: hanging around in shallow waters looking to snap up little fish and other goodies. But our birds differ slightly from their cousins. How? Here’s a hint: The people who name birds aren’t always that creative. That’s right: Night-herons are primarily active at night.
And it’s for this reason that you might not be familiar with them, though one could easily live nearby. Black-crowned Night-Herons are the more widespread of the two species, living full-time on both coasts and spending the breeding season throughout the lower 48 states. The Yellow-crowned Night-Heron is more restricted, found year-round only in Florida and in parts of the Southeast while breeding.
Luckily, adult birds of the two species are very easy to tell apart. The stature of both looks pretty much the same—shorter and stockier than other herons—but the coloring on the bodies and the head (especially the head) is where the ID is made. Black-crowned Night-Herons have a white body and face, gray wings, and a blueish-black crown and back. Yellow-crowned Night-Herons have gray bodies, black cheeks, and—you guessed it—a yellow crown on their head. Remember what I said about people not always being creative with names?
Back to your photographer - and now we know there is a night heron in Australia - theirs is called the Nankeen Night-heron because its main colour is ... yep, that tan/cinnamon shade called nankeen. (They have a Nankeen Kestrel too.)
"A record-setting polar vortex, which brought intense cold to a majority of the American heartland, has led to massive blackouts in Texas as significant amounts of generating capacity have been knocked offline."
It was an emotional roller-coaster for a lot of us since Monday. Instead of a planned 15-45 minutes rolling blackouts, only a fixed number of locations were picked for prolonged (days) blackouts during the coldest days throughout TX. Some homes had no power nor water, some had power but no water, but many never had an outage. Was it fair?
We don't mind helping out by enduring some inconveniences, but we don't want to be the only ones who bore the pain, for days!
On top of no power, our area also experienced a sewer plant outage and a brief period of natural gas outage.
The roads were icy in parts, numerous road closures, traffic lights out, businesses/gas stations closed, water and food shortage for many, the frigid temperature, the freezing rain, some burned furniture to stay warm, etc. etc.. The past 3 days was one big nightmare, one thing piled on top of another.
However, we were "lucky" considering our lowest temperature was only at ~18F (-7C). Dallas/Fort Worth area saw a low temperature of 1F (-17C). When we got our power back, our inside temperature registered at 49F (9C). What would theirs be?
There were many houses damaged by frozen water pipes, at least one burned down probably from using the fireplace to get warm, a family died from carbon monoxide poisoning by running the car inside their garage.
The list goes on and on...
So, what's the "beauty" of a blackout? Perhaps just a clearer view of the night sky!
A very sad experience that I wish no one on earth will ever have to go through, but I'm not holding my breath.
Happy to report that by late last night some of us here in Houston got our power restored for good, and our internet connection was restored a short while ago.
Temperature is gradually climbing back up to normal for the state of TX.
However, the Northeast is having a snow storm right now.
Thanks for reading my vent; may you have a wonderful day, stay warm and be safe!

The Elf-King's Daughter
-Sir William Watson-
The Kingdom of Elfland, proud and free,
With only the Law of Delight to bind it,
Where is it truly famed to be?
'Tis wheresoever we list to find it.
O'erwatched by all its peaks of gold,
There dwelt beside the Magic Water,
In forests drowsy with silence old,
That wild white Bliss, the Elf-King's Daughter.
And the elfin world was all she knew,
Till at last, on rash and luckless pinions,
Out of her father's realm she flew,
And sped across Night to Man's dominions.
She flew through calms, she flew through storms,
She alighted here and mocked at danger;
But soon she beheld two darksome forms —
Pain the Unknown, and Death the Stranger.
Aghast she gazed upon both these twain:
She had seen no shapes that theirs resembled.
No word had she heard of Death or Pain,
And they looked in her face and she quailed and trembled.
She strove to flee, upon mistlike wings,
But the mistlike wings, with foiled endeavour,
Drooped aTher sides as useless things,
Palsied in this our air for ever.
So here she remains, a wandering sprite,
And guards her secret and veils her story;
And sometimes, far in the heart of night,
She hath a glimpse of her vanished glory.
For then this region in dreams she spurns,
Revisits the verge of the Magic Water,
In dreams to her father's court returns,
And is — till the dawn — the Elf-King's Daughter.

A while ago a paper written by a colleague of mine sparked a discussion at work. The theme was on the concept of "Sin" but from a biblical standpoint in reference to the "original sin". It was a fascinating discussion, one that went on for days, but it has been a thought that has stayed with me since.
In all ancient religions, as well as newer ones, there is a belief that no man is free from sin. It is a common acceptance among people of all faiths, and those of no faith, that we all sin, one way or another. Whether they are sins governed by our ethics and morals or if they are sins committed towards others. Big or small, we share this bond in this sisterhood/brotherhood that is mankind. But why then, if we all sin, are we so quick to judge others for theirs? Why does one frown upon others' struggles, but expect understanding and forgiveness when it comes to ourselves? Why is it so hard for us to believe that maybe, just maybe, it is not our job to pass judgment upon others but to see each others' struggles and lend a helping hand instead?

With all of this said, this is where the idea of a picture series grew, and slowly, with the help of some incredible people around me, I was able to portray each sin. I wanted to keep the pictures simple, focusing on each model. The whole process was so much fun, meeting old friends, making new ones, and spending time with these talented and fascinating women. I am forever grateful for their friendship and support.
Thank you so much for taking the time and helping me with ideas, teaching me new things and being so generous with not only your time but also knowledge; Catalina, Aidy, Lya, Sophia, Ren, Missa, Lil Pea and Izzie
Also a huge thank you to my dear friend Mr G for helping me make the tattoo for this photo.
Usually gulls can be found in great numbers anywhere along England's south coast but here I managed to capture a single gull as it soared on the wind over the waters off the Sussex coast near Beachy Head. I know they are chip stealing, squawking, messy birds but it's difficult not to admire their fantastic aerial skills.
(Stay away from my chips!)
I've been away for a week and have hardly looked at flickr in that time apart from on my phone. Hopefully I can pick up some of the pieces over the next few days as I get back into it. I'm leaving comments off on this one as I always think it's unfair to expect people to comment on my images when I haven't been doing the same on theirs.
Any other T. Rex fans out there? Ride a White Swan by T. Rex is one of my fave songs of theirs.
I have a very wide and varied taste in music, but I do have a bit of a penchant for 60's/70's British bands. Think Yardbirds, Who, Cream, The Animals, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Kinks, T. Rex, Queen, Pink Floyd, Bowie, Slade, The Sweet etc.
Fun fact #1
Swan was T. Rex's first significant hit single all the way back in 1970 & helped shape the glam rock era. From 1970 to 1973, T. Rex were extremely popular in the UK, with a run of eleven top ten singles, four of which reached number one.
Fun fact #2
Google says "Ride a White Swan” is a song that encourages individuality, self-expression, and the pursuit of personal freedom. With its enchanting lyrics and dreamlike imagery, it invites the listener to embark on a journey of self-discovery and exploration. It is a timeless reminder to embrace our uniqueness, let go of societal expectations, and ride the waves of life with grace and courage. And here I was thinking it was just a catchy, breezy little number!
Have a great week everyone!
I dare you to try not bopping along to Ride a White Swan here:
“Don't let the expectations and opinions of other people affect your decisions. It's your life, not theirs. Do what matters most to you; do what makes you feel alive and happy. Don't let the expectations and ideas of others limit who you are. If you let others tell you who you are, you are living their reality — not yours. There is more to life than pleasing people. There is much more to life than following others' prescribed path. There is so much more to life than what you experience right now. You need to decide who you are for yourself. Become a whole being. Adventure.”

Often when you are observing the skimmers at nesting time you will see altercations in the sky. They are protecting what they feel is theirs and do not want anyone in their space. Beautiful and very unique birds !!
Wishing you all a very pleasant and blessed day !!!!!
At the Flensburg Fjord, Northern Germany
There were a lot more swans, that evening the beach was theirs.
Back from my holidays in England and had a wonderful time - though at the time of writing our suitcases are still enjoying theirs (last seen Frankfurt airport). Even if it wasn't a photographic holiday I still got time to get out and take the odd snap here and there. Also got to meet Dom who kindly drove me to St Just and the old tin mines of Botallack one evening. A very pleasant time was had, and quite possibly one of the best ciders I've ever drunk as well.
Even if I survived the ledge of doom to get over to take this picture, walking across it didn't cure me of my fear of heights. I worryingly think it's made it worse somewhat lol! After crossing back to the "mainland" it took a good 15-20 minutes just to calm my racing heart. I really enjoyed my time with Dom but next time we meet up I'll insist on somewhere a little less higher up and not staring down into an abyss!

IF you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream – and not make dreams your master;
If you can think – and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
‘ Or walk with Kings – nor lose the common touch,
if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And – which is more – you’ll be a Man, my son!

Cyclamen
Our wonderful neighbours, Ron and Elaine, bought us this wonderful Cyclamen plant yesterday. (They know that I have long admired theirs).
So before I decided where it would be placed among the other potted plants I took this shot.
Took this at the end of April, some of the Fallow deer have lost their antlers but these two still have theirs. Always amazes me how fast their new ones grow over the summer months, apparently as much as half an inch a day.
