Norbury Woods Staffordshire UK 22nd April 2019.

We went to explore the streets of Cloverdale yesterday. I had not been there for years but it was very familiar to me when I was young. My uncle ran a successful auto supply store there and we visited often. It is now full of - pizza places, public houses, hair salons, tchotchke stores, and Indian eateries. It was quite astounding, and worst of all, the theater is now a ...

In July 1885, three teenage Hawaiian princes took a break from their boarding school, St. Mathew's Hall in San Mateo, and came to cool off in Santa Cruz, California. There, David Kawānanakoa, Edward Keliʻiahonui and Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole surfed the mouth of the San Lorenzo River on custom-shaped redwood boards, according to surf historians Kim Stoner and Geoff Dunn. In 1890, the pioneer in agricultural education John Wrightson reputedly became the first British surfer when instructed by two Hawaiian students at his college.

George Freeth (1883–1919) is often credited as being the "Father of Modern Surfing". He is thought to have been the first modern surfer.

In 1907, the eclectic interests of the land baron Henry E. Huntington brought surfing to the California coast. While on vacation, Huntington had seen Hawaiian boys surfing the island waves. Looking for a way to entice visitors to the area of Redondo Beach, where he had heavily invested in real estate, he hired a young Hawaiian to ride surfboards. George Freeth decided to revive the art of surfing, but had little success with the huge 500 cm (16 ft) hardwood boards that were popular at that time. When he cut them in half to make them more manageable, he created the original "Long board", which made him the talk of the islands. To the delight of visitors, Freeth exhibited his surfing skills twice a day in front of the Hotel Redondo. Another native Hawaiian, Duke Kahanamoku, spread surfing to both the U.S. and Australia, riding the waves after displaying the swimming prowess that won him Olympic gold medals in 1912 and 1920.

In 1975, a professional tour started. That year Margo Oberg became the first female professional surfer.

From the balmy shores of San Diego to the chilly waters of Northern California, the Golden State’s coastline offers the allure of perfect waves for every type of surfer. In August 2018, the state assembly voted overwhelmingly to enshrine surfing as California’s official sport. A new holiday was even created to commemorate the cowabunga-inspired moment—September 20 is California Surfing Day.

I think even more shocked to see me than I was to see them? WHOOOO ARE YOU? What are you doing here, their thinking?

While I'm being eaten alive by mosquitoes that's what. But their worth it, I keep telling myself?

----------------------------- JESUS ✝️ SAVES-------------------------------

SALVATION THROUGH FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST - ALONE!

12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."

❤️❤️ IT'S ALL JESUS AND NONE OF OURSELVES! ❤️❤️

16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the SALVATION of everyone WHO BELIEVES: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel a RIGHTEOUSNESS FROM GOD IS REVEALED, a righteousness that is by FAITH FROM FIRST TO LAST, just as it is written: "THE RIGHTEOUS WILL LIVE BY FAITH." (Romans 1:16-17)

16 KNOW that a man is NOT justified by observing the law, but by FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be JUSTIFIED BY FAITH in CHRIST and NOT by observing the law, BECAUSE BY OBSERVING THE LAW NO ONE WILL BE JUSTIFIED. (Galatians 2:16)

1. Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2. BY THIS GOSPEL YOU ARE SAVED, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.

3. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4. that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5. and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. 6. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8. and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.

9. For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them--yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. 11. Whether, then, it was I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed. (1 Corinthians 15:1-11)

7. Therefore Jesus said again, "I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. 8. All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9. I am the gate; whoever enters through me WILL BE SAVED. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10. The thief comes only to STEAL and KILL and DESTROY; I have come that they may have LIFE, and have it to the FULL. (John 10:7-10)

1 Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. 2 For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. 3 Since they did not know the righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. 4 Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.

5 Moses describes in this way the righteousness that is by the law: "The man who does these things will live by them." 6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'" (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 "or 'Who will descend into the deep?'" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: 9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. 11 As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame." 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." (Romans 10:1-13)

Jesus came to bring spiritual LIFE to the spiritually dead and set the captives FREE! FREE from RELIGION, ERROR and outright LIES, so WE might serve THE LIVING GOD! In SPIRIT and in TRUTH!

So you'll KNOW, and not think you're to bad for God to love. The Christian LIFE isn't about how good WE are, because NONE of us are! It's about how GOOD JESUS IS! Because JESUS LOVES US, so much he died in our place and took the punishment for all of our sins on himself. The wages of sin is DEATH, and Jesus took the death WE so richly deserved for us and died in our place. The good news is, there's no more punishment for sin left. WE, you and I were all born forgive as a result of the crucifixion of God himself on the cross that took away the sins of the whole world. All we have to do is believe it, and put your Faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ. That my friends is REAL UNCONDITIONAL LOVE! YOU ARE LOVED. ❤️ ✝️ ❤️

After their journey from Mexico through the Gulf ....all they can think of is how to replenish themselves after a cool bath from the drip.. They need all the nourishment to complete their journey up North. Quintana is a place that welcomes them.

To survive the elements, and dodge their predators, and multiply is a feat for these little creatures.

Their caterpillars are not popular, as they love fresh cabbage. I don't grow cabbage, so when one lands in my garden, I just enjoy the poetry of its presence.

Seeing these four very young cheetahs with their mom was the highlight of our several game drives in Serengeti National Park and we felt *extremely* fortunate to see and photograph them.

==========================

From Wikipedia: The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is a large cat of the subfamily Felinae that occurs in Southern, North and East Africa and and a few localities in Iran. The species is IUCN Red Listed as vulnerable, as it suffered a substantial decline in its historic range in the 20th century due to habitat loss, poaching, illegal pet trade, and conflict with humans. By 2016, the global cheetah population has been estimated at approximately 7,100 individuals in the wild. Several African countries have taken steps to improve cheetah conservation measures.

It is the fastest land animal. The only extant member of the genus Acinonyx, the cheetah was formally described by Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber in 1775. The cheetah is characterised by a slender body, deep chest, spotted coat, small rounded head, black tear-like streaks on the face, long thin legs and long spotted tail. Its lightly built, slender form is in sharp contrast with the robust build of the big cats, making it more similar to the cougar. The cheetah reaches nearly 70 to 90 cm (28 to 35 in) at the shoulder, and weighs 21–72 kg (46–159 lb). Though taller than the leopard, it is notably smaller than the lion. Typically yellowish tan or rufous to greyish white, the coat is uniformly covered with nearly 2,000 solid black spots.

Cheetahs are active mainly during the day, with hunting their major activity. Adult males are sociable despite their territoriality, forming groups called coalitions. Females are not territorial; they may be solitary or live with their offspring in home ranges. Carnivores, cheetah mainly prey upon antelopes and gazelles. They will stalk their prey to within 100–300 m (330–980 ft), charge towards it and kill it by tripping it during the chase and biting its throat to suffocate it to death. Cheetahs can reach speeds of 112 km/h (70 mph) in short bursts, but this is disputed by more recent measurements. The average speed of cheetahs is about 64 km/h (40 mph). Cheetahs are induced ovulators, breeding throughout the year. Gestation is nearly three months long, resulting in a litter of typically three to five cubs (the number can vary from one to eight). Weaning occurs at six months; siblings tend to stay together for some time. Cheetah cubs face higher mortality than most other mammals, especially in the Serengeti region. Cheetahs inhabit a variety of habitats – dry forests, scrub forests and savannahs.

Because of its prowess at hunting, the cheetah was tamed and used to kill game at hunts in the past. The animal has been widely depicted in art, literature, advertising and animation.

The cheetah's closest relatives are the cougar (Puma concolor) and the jaguarundi (Herpailurus yagouaroundi).[These three species together form the Puma lineage, one of the eight lineages of Felidae. The sister group of the Puma lineage is a clade of smaller Old World cats that includes the genera Felis, Otocolobus and Prionailurus.

Although the cheetah is an African cat, molecular evidence indicates that the three species of the Puma lineage evolved in North America two to three million years ago, where they possibly had a common ancestor during the Miocene. They possibly diverged from this ancestor 8.25 million years ago. The cheetah diverged from the puma and the jaguarundi around 6.7 million years ago. A genome study suggests that cheetahs experienced two genetic bottlenecks in their history, the first about 100,000 years ago and the second about 12,000 years ago, greatly lowering their genetic variability. These bottlenecks may have been associated with migrations across Asia and into Africa (with the current African population founded about 12,000 years ago), and/or with a depletion of prey species at the end of the Pleistocene.

CSXT has been wasting no time going to work on their former Pan Am property with active work happening from Worcester to Mattawamkeag including major improvements to Rigby Yard and countless trains of new continuous welded rail (cwr). In fact at one point recently there were three different rail trains on the property.

While much of the work is wholly CSXT funded to support their freight operations and simply to pull the PAR property liberally out of the mud this project is different. This train is laying out welded rail for six miles of new (well rebuilt anyway!) double track that will stretch from CPF228 in Wells to just east of the Elm St. crossing in North Berwick. This nearly $33 million project is funded 73% by the Federal Government, 20% by the state, and about 7% by CSXT (ex Pan Am). To read about this project and follow along for updates check out the website of the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority (NNEPRA) that is the state of Maine's public transportation agency overseeing and funding the Downeaster service. The project link is here: www.nnepra.com/project/wells-area-improvement-project-2/

This view is from behind the little historic cemetary just east of the Wells St. / Maine Route 9 overpass at about MP 232.7 on CSXT's ex Pan Am District 2 mainline, the former Boston and Maine Railroad's Portland Division that was formerly all double tracked until being cut back during the early Guilford years. The train belongs to A&K railroad Materials and carries the VSR reporting marks of one of their subsidiaries. The contractors are operating the train and are handling the unloading process in conjunction with CSXT engineering department employees and the CSXT crew aboard CSXT 2548, a GP38-2 blt. Nov. 1973 as SCL 548 and delivered in black and yellow.

This painting is one of the series "Their secret..."

The series "Their secret...", is dedicated to the flowers, their soul... Specifically, this picture is my impression from looking at one of Lilies.

Another king penguin picture from Grytviken, South Georgia. A number of these birds were clustered together in the shallow water that was flowing out over the stone beach from a small creek. They seem to like doing that sort of thing. I've seen photos where there are thousands lining a river of snow and glacier melt. Birds have a system of countercurrent heat exchange in their legs that helps keep them warm in cold weather. I wonder if it works in reverse to help the penguins cool off. It cool for the humans, but perhaps that was not the case for the blubber rich kings. I was not able to find out if it does indeed work both ways, but it seems possible.

The tall trees, their branches reaching towards the heavens, stand as silent sentinels, guarding this tranquil scene. Beneath their canopy, the bridge, a symbol of connection and passage, stands as a testament to the enduring power of nature's beauty. It is a place where people pause, drawn by the serenity of their surroundings, to find solace and peace. Here, one may purchase pellets and feed the happy Koi swimming in the water below, The bridge, the water, the trees, and the figures upon it form a harmonious portrait of nature's artistry, a scene that captures the essence of tranquility.

Making their second and final trip back to Eagle Mills with another 60 ore loads, the 3 Yard job grinds through the cut at Palmer Line Jct. Even with the stout wind that was blowing through the trees, that familiar chug chug that the boats make when they are working was clear as day and so much cooler cutting through the darkness.

Their coffee is artfully brewed.

After CN transferred their countrywide passenger services into the new VIA system, they still remained in the passenger business. Like here in Montreal, where they operated an electrified commuter system since it was built in 1918 until 1982, when it too was transferred out of the CN system. It was a unique and pretty cool operation if you ask me, and for unknown reasons, I was wise enough to pay it a visit. One of the neatest stations on the line was Val Royal, where we see a MU train making it's station stop. I sure wish I could still go out and shoot some spotless, good looking, MU trains like this one these days.

I had a feeling I was being watched.

The girls remained in Adrienne’s living room, but everything felt eerily altered.

“They can’t see us, but we can see them,” Kayla whispered. “I moved us between dimensions.”

Through the thick fog that now separated them from their previous reality, Adrienne clung tightly to Kayla’s hand, watching the two men enter the room. Their movements were sharp, calculated, as they began combing the house.

“No one’s here. Check the device,” one commanded.

The other rushed to the closet, his fingers trailing the empty space on the shelf where the device had been only moments ago. “It was here. Now it’s gone. They were here… and they have it.

A deep, guttural growl rumbled from the bald man as he surveyed the room.

Then, abruptly, he turned—his stare locking onto Adrienne and Kayla, as if he could see beyond the veil. His nostrils flared as he inhaled deeply… Adrienne held her breath.

“The stench is strong. They were here. Not long ago. Maybe they still are.” His voice was rough, primal, as his gaze scoured the space. “We will return. We’ll track their signal.”

Again, he took in the air, then slashed a hand through the space where the girls stood. It passed through harmlessly, though he swung again. And again.

Frustration boiled beneath his skin, erupting into another low growl. “I will have you both.” With that final promise, the two men turned and left.

My entry for the Monthly Scavenger Hunt category "Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings".

Marbled Godwits breed in three distinct areas with their own unique route. The vast majority occur in mid-continental North America, followed by Eastern Canada and the Alaska Peninsula, USA. In addition, the largest winter ranges are the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf coasts of the US and Mexico. I personally have seen them on the coast in Humboldt County in California and generally they are found on the coasts of North America. Godwits breeding in the Western USA and Canada follow a route through the Utah stopover site, with a final arrival in the winter sites of Mexico. Species breeding in Eastern Canada migrate across the US and stopover at sites along the Gulf of California and Mexico. Furthermore, those breeding in North and South Dakota winter in Coastal Georgia. These particular birds (10-20) do not appear to be migrating at the moment and have been at the preserve for over a month.

Sharing space on their perch.

In 2016 Czech operator LEO Express ordered net EMU's. The interior of their FLIRT units were in dire need of a renovation and the operator was planning the expand operations to new services, stretching their excisting fleet even more. Eventually the acceptance tests of these new CRRC Sirius units took slightly longer (officially due to the covid-crisis) and by that time LEO Express was bought by Renfe. Renfe cancelled the order and the CRRC Sirius units were left without owner. In 2024 the other large private operator in Czechia, RegioJet, acquired the units. Gradually the units were put into service on the Ústí nad Labem - Kolín route. Since the summer of 2025 all 3 units were active.

As a passenger I got to say the units are okay-ish. Somehow they remind me of the danish IC4 units. They looked great as well, but on the inside you could see signs of a different quality. I've been a couple of times on unit 665 001 and I wasn't all they impressed with the quality of the ride and with the sturdiness of some interor parts. However from the outside I'd say they look amazing. The RegioJet livery onto LEO Express' dark colours really fit well. Even better then their normal bright yellow trains. During the summer of 2025 I managed to get unit 665 001 on photo as it made its way to Ústí nad Labem. The city has already been reached, but due to turning around in one of the stations, it would take another 15 minutes until it would reach it final destination.

After finishing up their work at Tri City and leaving the two classic GP18s behind there New Hampshire Northcoast Railroad train D8 from Ossipee to Dover is highballing south behind GP38-2s NHN 3825 (blt. Sept. 1978 as CR 8244), leased FURX 5509 (blt. Mar. 1970 as high nosed straight GP38 SOU 2801) and NHN 3823 (blt. Sept. 1978 as CR 8242). They are approaching the Old Milton Road crossing as they roll thru the colorful the marshland surrounding Heath Brook near MP 81.8 on the former Boston and Maine Railroad's Conway Branch.

For those who are less familiar with this route here is a concise history excerpted from a June 2004 report to the NH State Legislature by the state DOT's Bureau of Rail and Transit on the feasibility of reopening the line to service all the way to Conway.

'Several railroad histories describe the formation and construction of the Conway Branch rail line, most recently The Rail Lines of Northern New England (Robert M. Lindsell, Branch Line Press, 2000). After several attempts to form railroad companies and construct the southern segments of this line, the Portsmouth, Great Falls, and Conway Railroad was chartered in 1865. Construction of the line was completed to West Ossipee in 1871 and to North Conway in 1872.

Initially, the line initiated at Jewett in Maine, through Salmon Falls to Somersworth. This

alignment was replaced by the current line from Rollinsford to Somersworth. Passenger service from Boston to the new North Conway station began in 1872. A connection with the Portland & Ogdensburg Railroad (later Maine Central’s Mountain Division) at Intervale was made in 1875.

The Portsmouth, Great Falls and Conway was part of the Eastern Railroad, which merged with the Boston and Maine Railroad in 1890. The railroad served manufacturing plants in several communities and lumber mills and sand and gravel operations in the Conway area. Freight service north of Ossipee ended in 1972. During the 1980s, the Boston Sand & Gravel Co. initiated service on the line for its subsidiary, Ossipee Aggregates by a new railroad, the New Hampshire Northcoast. This included the purchase of the line from Rochester to Ossipee and a major rehabilitation project that was partly funded by the state of New Hampshire through capital budget appropriations, federal Local Rail Freight Assistance funds, and the state’s revolving loan program for short line railroads. In 1994, the New Hampshire Northcoast purchased the balance of the line from Rollinsford to Rochester from the B&M.

The rehabilitation of the Conway Branch to Ossipee was a major undertaking, involving a large investment by the New Hampshire Northcoast and expenditure of $989,000 in state capital budget funds, $656,000 in LRFA funds (with railroad matching funds), and $606,000 in revolving loan funds now being repaid by the railroad. The railroad’s ability to handle heavy loads of sand and gravel has removed approximately 30,000 trucks per year from the highway system between Ossipee and Boston.

The Boston and Maine and its predecessors operated passenger service on the Conway Branch from 1872 to 1961. The Interstate Commerce Commission approved abandonment of the line from Mt. Whittier (West Ossipee) to Intervale in 1972. Abandonment, a process now handled by the federal Surface Transportation Board, the successor to the ICC, relieves a railroad of its obligation to provide freight service to a shipper. In 1974, the railroad corridor within the town of Conway was sold to the Conway Scenic Railroad.

Efforts to preserve the Conway Branch as a railroad corridor have included the purchase of most of the line within the town of Madison by the town in 1987, and its subsequent sale to the state in 1995. The state of New Hampshire purchased the balance of the line owned by the Boston & Maine in 2001. Today, the New Hampshire Northcoast owns the railroad corridor from its junction with the B&M main line in Rollinsford to Route 28 in Ossipee, the state owns it from that point to the Albany-Conway town line, and the Conway Scenic owns the balance of the corridor in the town of Conway to Intervale.'
