Less than 10 minutes up the path from the more well known Russell Falls in Tasmania is Horseshoe Falls, which is a much smaller waterfall with two drops and the ability to get very close to the action.

I visited on a near freezing morning in late October and was amazed by the colour and composition of both the waterfall and the rainforest itself.

Dock in Chincoteage... There's more to this story than meets the eye. Later in the day, fifty feet further down this dock, I was setting up my camera on a tripod when boom, it became detached, fell, rolled along the dock, and splashed into the water, salt water mind you. I watched it slowly settle to the bottom, emitting a few bubbles as water displaced the air inside the camera. I found an older gentlemen who helped me by going home and getting a net that I used to 'rescue' the camera from the denizens of the deep. I immediately removed the battery and placed it in fresh water and changed it dozens of times each day for several days. And in the end I have a few salvaged parts and my two media cards. I placed the cards in rice and let them dry for several days. And when done, the cards performed flawlessly to this day. Thus the above image was once under salt water before being rescued. Those rescued images were set aside and forgotten, only to be rediscovered a few days ago. What a surprise, but yet also a reminder of the loss of a Canon 5D MIV + lens. I never trusted that cheap old tripod again. It was "repurposed" and replaced with a most sturdy and reliable Manfrotto carbon fiber tripod. One of the lessons learned that day was to always buy good gear and don't trust a good camera to a marginal tripod. Even at that, I've equipped all my cameras with a 'tether' that attaches to a tripod, so that I'll never again be able to have a camera become completely detached from a tripod. If so, it falls at most 10 or 12 inches. They say that the best lessons in life are those that cost you something...

No matter how large or how small a given space may be there’s always room for colors to share that space. A tree has so much space to share with lots of vivid colors. Look at the colors or shades that Autumn provides us at its peak. A Maple tree is a good example. On a smaller scale look at the most colorful fish in an aquarium. One fish can house several colors within its body. Though many flowers appear to represent basically one color such as a Red Rose, a Yellow Rose etc., this rose caught my attention in that there are no less than two beautiful “Colors Sharing Space” Nature continues to amaze and impress us with miracles (plants, animals and people) that come in many colors yet sharing small spaces. Thanks for viewing my work.

The katana belongs to the nihontō family of swords, and is distinguished by a blade length (nagasa) of more than 2 shaku, approximately 60 cm (24 in).Katana can also be known as dai or daitō among Western sword enthusiasts, although daitō is a generic name for any Japanese long sword, literally meaning "big sword".[ As Japanese does not have separate plural and singular forms, both katanas and katana are considered acceptable forms in English.

Pronounced [katana], the kun'yomi (Japanese reading) of the kanji 刀, originally meaning dao or knife/saber in Chinese, the word has been adopted as a loanword by the Portuguese. In Portuguese the designation (spelled catana) means "large knife" or machete.

About less than an hour's drive east of Phoenix Arizona lies the Superstition Mountains which is the alleged location of the lost Dutchman mine. The story starts with a man named Jacob Waltz who come out these mountains with gold he said he got from a mine he found but died not long afterwards taking the secret of it's location to his grave. One must remember that less than ten miles away the town of Goldfield had an operating goldmine that extracted enough gold to be worth hundreds of millions in todays dollars. So that there was another nearby motherload of gold was nearby was quite believable. Some men over years have come out with some gold claiming they found the lost mine but these turned out not to be true. With gold now worth $1300 an ounce today the allure of lost treasure will still excite people today. The legend of the mine faded from public view until 1931 when the amateur explorer and treasure hunter Adolph Ruth disappeared until months later a skull was found with two bullet holes in it and dental records provided a positive match. You would think someone getting murdered would deter people instead it had the opposite effect with area being flooded with wannabe treasure hunters and less than savory types heavily armed going into the mountains reported. The state designated the area a state park with anyone caught trying prospecting subject to swift arrest. Considering Arizona's penal system known for it's alleged inhumane prison system where many inmates live in unairconditioned cells or tents in the brutal summer heat which is a long discussion in itself is enough to discourage 99% would be treasure hunters.

** Tree sparrows are smaller than the more common House Sparrows and are harder to come across . There numbers have been in decline for some time and they are on the RSPB red list. The only place I ever see them is at Bempton not on the cliffs with the sea birds but on bushes and trees a few hundred yards from the sea . With their Chestnut heads they are bonny little birds

It took a lot longer than expected to get to my hotel close to Zilina, Slovakia. The road was narrow, full of curves and rather busy. I did enjoy, though, and I enjoyed the warm dish and the spacious room at the hotel even more. The next day, I had planned a day on the non-electrified railway lines around Horna Stubna, hoping to see some of the 754-series locomotives in action. And who knows, maybe even a "Bardotka" with a freight train.

Not knowing what to expect, I just went to the station of Klastor Pod Znievom where I was lucky enough to catch 754 020 hauling a train to Horna Stubna. A very good start of the day!

BIG BIRD in a small body.

These little guys are smaller than your thumb, but seem to have NO FEAR! Huge birds like Herons and Egrets run for their lives, if they happen to notice you can see them, a half mile away.

Yet when I spot these tiny little birds almost anywhere they couldn't care less if you see them or not. In fact sometimes they become so curious about what you're up too, the will come land on a branch right next to your head so close there's no way your camera can even focus on them. Some times even Hummingbirds will do that, almost willing to land on your nose to get a good look.

While even flocks of thousands of geese or ducks will scramble for their lives if you merely drive by in a truck a quarter mile away. What's up with that?

7 Therefore Jesus said again, "I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me WILL BE SAVED. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to STEAL and KILL and DESTROY; I have come that they may have LIFE, and have it to the FULL. (John 10:7-10)

Frost's bolete is a widely distributed mushroom in the eastern and southwestern US. Boletes are classified as a groupd of mushrooms that produce their spores in tubular structures under the cap, rather than gills. Found growing in association with hardwood trees, especially oak. The network pattern of the stipe (the stalk) and the amber droplets produced along the cap in young fruiting bodies.

This highly social and intelligent species is well adapted to a semi-aquatic life-style. Male and female California sea lions differ significantly in appearance. Males are substantially bigger than females and have an enlarged sagittal crest, which is usually topped with white fur.

Happy Caturday!

The lion (Panthera leo) is a species in the family Felidae; it is a muscular, deep-chested cat with a short, rounded head, a reduced neck and round ears, and a hairy tuft at the end of its tail. The lion is sexually dimorphic; males are larger than females with a typical weight range of 150 to 250 kg (330 to 550 lb) for males and 120 to 182 kg (265 to 400 lb) for females. Male lions have a prominent mane, which is the most recognizable feature of the species.

A lion pride consists of a few adult males, related females and cubs. Groups of female lions typically hunt together, preying mostly on large ungulates. The species is an apex and keystone predator, although they scavenge when opportunities occur.

Typically, the lion inhabits grasslands and savannas but is absent in dense forests. It is usually more diurnal than other big cats, but when persecuted it adapts to being active at night and at twilight.

It has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 1996 because populations in African countries have declined by about 43% since the early 1990s. Lion populations are untenable outside designated protected areas. Although the cause of the decline is not fully understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are the greatest causes for concern. - Wikipedia

Running about 22 hours behind schedule, Amtrak’s California Zephyr train No. 5 rockets through the Salt Lake Valley at Riverton, Utah the evening of June 20, 1998. The reason for the extreme tardiness is lost to history.

Summer in Melbourne was milder than predicted this year, and it seems like it is bleeding into autumn, for the weather is warming up and everywhere gardens are bursting forth with beautiful coloured blooms in a profusion of colours.

I took an afternoon stroll in the late summer sunshine the other day, and I walked past this beautiful "Julia's Rose" which is thriving in the well maintained garden of a stylish 1930s Art Deco clinker brick villa. This coffee coloured rose bush is a favourite of mine, as I love the shape of the flowers as they expand into full bloom.

Introduced in 1976 by Wisbech Plant Farm in the United Kingdom, "Julia's Rose" is an unusual colour blend of coffee, lavender and pink blushes on long smooth stems. A tall open bush, this rose repeat flowers often in clusters from October to May and in cooler weather can become completely coffee-coloured.

from our neighbour's tree, and this year their skin is very bitter, so to use them I had to blanche them in hot water, then in ice water and peel off the skins, labour intensive and very messy.

I decided to mix some of the juicy red flesh with apricots and made a gorgeous rosy hued jam.

CSXT L004 (old B724) has been on duty more than four hours and is just now starting north. They are technically still inside the Framingham Yard limits as they trundle northbound on the Fitchburg Branch at about MP QBU35.6. The entirety of the branch is designated as Other Than Main Track with this local operating at Restricted Speed but not exceeding 10 MPH the whole way making for an agonizingly long round trip. The two GP40-2s are snaking through the weedy trackage on the causeway over the Foss Reservoir/Sudbury River with a big train of nearly 30 cars.

This trackage dates from 1855 when the Agricultural Branch Railroad opened between Framingham and Northborough. In July 1866, the railroad opened a 14-mile extension to a connection with the Fitchburg and Worcester Railroad at Pratts Junction in Sterling. The next dozen years were rather convoluted as many small independent lines began to congeal into larger systems and by 1879 the route was part of the Old Colony Railroad, then ultimately the New York, New Haven, & Hartford in 1893.

This line, like its sister route to Lowell was one of only three incursions of the NH north of the defacto "Mason Dixon Line" of New England Railroading into Boston and Maine territory. For virtually a century, with few exceptions, the NH ruled CT and RI and everything in MA south of New York Central's Boston & Albany subsidiary that ran in a virtual straight line between its namesake cities bifurcating New England.

Today this 30 mile route meandering northwest is the last CSXT owned branchline in Massachusetts, with all the rest of any length that they still operate having been sold to MassDOT. The branch seems to have a solid future thanks to the addition of a busy new demolition debris customer near the end of the line in Leominster supplementing stalwarts like Ken's Foods, Nucor, and Bestway Lumber.

wow, this was way tougher than i thought it would be . .

first up, trying to find a spoon that wasn't too scratched up was an impossible quest, so then, getting the reflection to look decent also was challenging, i eventually had to bend the spoon to make it work out, then had to wait for some 'lighting' (the sun to shine on cloudy days), my cat wasn't any help during setup either, however, it was all fun in the end!

it's great to be challenged! HaPpY CrAzy TuEsDaY

Clouds are more than just intrinsically beautiful; they also serve as a canvas for light and color.

They are born, they grow, travel vast distances across the sky and then disappear into nothingness. They are in a constant state of changing shape, size and in some cases color and brightness

I was sitting at my desk last Friday when I got a call from the boss telling me to get my bum out the door and get a picture of the moon. I had no idea what he was talking about so I wandered around my building until I saw it. It was gorgeous!! Like a good employee I rounded everyone up for a look and while all were nicely distracted, I slipped out the backdoor. :-)

Totally uncomfortable with night photography, there I was in the freezing cold and wondering how to do this. There is a line in a song I like, "It is better to feel pain, than nothing at all," and let me tell you, it was painful. :-) Literally, my hands hurt, I could't feel my face, also no tripod. So I propped the camera up on a bollard and gave it a try. I lasted ten minutes max before I thought I would freeze to the earth.

Anyhow...here is the wolf moon. I wasn't sure if I was doing it justice but regardless, I loved being out there. Me and night photography.....a stubborn love.

I'm snowed in today but cozy, happy, and hopped up on coffee. Wishing you all the same good Friday feels!
