We're human. We make mistakes and we do good things, but we're incredibly flawed creatures. We're also unbelievably blessed, in some things.
Photography helps us (helps me, at least) to escape from that human side and to become something more. With the help of a few tools, we can fly, or run with a cheetah, or illuminate a jar. But as soon as the lights are off and the photo is posted, we go back to being humans, to being the flawed creatures we were meant to be. And sometimes, being human means you hurt, and you ache, and that you spend a day knowing that the only thing you want to do is send someone a message saying you miss them. And you know you shouldn't. You know they probably don't even miss you back. But you do, and you need them to know that.
And then comes the self-control, and the ability to keep ourselves from doing things that we think will cause us pain. So we don't hit send on that message, we tuck our phones back into our pockets and we keep on walking, keep on talking to someone else or start the car to get out of that spot. We take a deep breath and try to forget everything. But we're flawed. And while most times we can forget, sometimes we just can't.

My last seagull pic prompted a few questions about textures and which ones I'm using, so I thought I'd post another shot of my "kitchen."
You can see that I'm actually using three textures, and two to three layers of each, which I've blended in and out using masks and various overlay modes.
The post processing on this one got pretty extensive - about 24 layers (including 8 texture layers, 3 high-pass layers, and 9 adjustment layers). Fun!! :)

We found this cluster of fungi on a day of botanizing at the Medicine River Wildlife Centre, near Raven, Alberta (a long drive north of Calgary). Loved their textured caps with the dainty frill around the edges. Taken on 27 July 2012.

.....as darkness falls on the last day of the year, I feel (as I usually do) strangely low of spirit. The night ahead will be one of gathering freinds, laughter, tall tales and reminicences, eating 'a plenty and eventually for me there will be sadness. I will remember the year gone by, but thoughts will always return to the fact that for every year passing then one less remains to be lived. Why is it such that the older you get the faster the years go by? ........Happy New Year to you all!
