A great figure-ground reversal can be seen in the red 'herring bone' pattern. However, the colors are a little much (Professor Waldman says he's a bit ashamed of this particular textile for that very reason)

Most people are familiar with the Peace Center, and perhaps even notice the "old buildings" behind the Peace Center. Those old buildings are the restored remains of the Huguenot Mill. This mill was built in 1881 for weaving plaid and gingham. Although it was next to the Reedy river, it was powered by steam instead of water.
This building restoration was made possible by a donation during the building of the Peace Center, and now serves as office and conference room space.
This is the first post of a series on the textile mills around Greenville. The posts are based on the highly regarded Textile Crescent Tour conducted by historian Don Koonce. The tour is hosted by the Upcountry History Museum, and usually sells out early. The series will cover just a small part of the overall tour. Although the local economy no longer depends on textiles, the Greenville of today has been heavily influenced by the textile mills and their owners.
