“Fashion is a language. Some know it, some learn it, some never will – like an instinct.” - Edith Head

The theme for “Looking Close on Friday” for the 14th of May is “textile texture”. Luckily for me, I have lots of beautiful fabrics to choose from for this theme.

My partner says I have a very theatrical wardrobe because it is full of beautiful evening wear made from silks, satins, velvets and brocades. This pale cream satin brocade with magenta roses, which I bought from France just before Coronavirus hit the world, has yet to be made into something. I have a wedding to attend in November, so it might end up being a nice jacket for the occasion, or a new theatre coat. I haven’t quite made up my mind yet, and like good wine, I am happy to let this fabric sit and mature until the moment inspiration strikes.

My friend wove this for me, I love it to bits.

Brocade (Ital. broccato, to broccare "to work through") is today generally understood to be a heavy, firm and patterned textile fabric made of silk or rayon (viscose filament yarn) into which gold or silver threads are woven (gold or silver brocade).

I had a nice jumper from Debenhams and I saw they had some in their sale so I bought a couple more.

Kyrgyz traditional handcrafted Shyrdak felt rug covers the doorway. The patterns used in shyrdak are characteristic of those used in other Kyrgyz arts and crafts. Some designs are very old, before Islamic times. Each pattern has a name, some of which indicate a connection with the old shamanism past.

Well known is the Sheep’s horn motif, mostly used in the centre field of the shyrdak in a variety of combinations. It represents wealth. The sheep will bring wool, milk and flesh to the tribe or family. If the sheep are OK, the family is OK.

Hi there! I used Derwent Inktense watercolor pencils to color in the Garden Roses image. I distressed just the edge of the textured piece of green cardstock with Peeled Paint Distress Ink. Then I applied a lighter shade of green (Bamboo Leaves) with sponge daubers to create a vignette around the focal image and matte.

Materials used:

* Bazzill Basics 8.5" x 11" cardstock: Pear Crush (pale green)

* BoBunny Double Dot double-sided cardstock: Sea Foam (dark green)

* cardstock: white, textured white

* Derwent Inktense watercolor pencils

* EK Success Cutter Bee scissors

* Hero Arts K5056 Garden Roses

* paint brush

* Plaid All Night Media Pop Dots

* Provo Craft Cuttlebug and embossing folder 37-1153 Textile Texture

* Ranger Archival Ink (waterproof): jet black

* Ranger Distress Ink: Peeled Paint (green)

The flag of Belgium displays its rich colors of black, yellow, and red in a silky texture, capturing the essence of national pride and heritage.

A parade of villagers and loyal hounds winds joyously through a patchwork paradise. Bold houses with terracotta roofs gleam under twin suns, while trees bloom like exclamation marks against rolling stitched hills. This is a world of song and sun, where community and color walk hand in hand.
