Description: Excerpt from the Annual Report on the Kindergarten for the Blind for the Annual Reception at the Kindergarten, pertaining to the transcript of a speech by Julia Ward Howe. Page 2 of 3.
Full Text: ...we not sometime hear the music out of this blinded life of ours,- as today we have heard the music and the harmony and the joy of the winds and the birds, and God's free sky, which not yet our eyes have seen but which are real to us, and are the joy of every active heart?
I thank you for the privilege of these few words, and most heartily do I congratulate everyone who has contributed to the excellence of the work shown here today; and I congratulate not merely upon the present, but upon the widening out of the present into the larger vision of needs outgrown in a less defective society.
At the close of this eloquent address, all were gratified when in response to General Appleton's invitation, Mrs. Julia Ward Howe who had been the centre of respectful attention in her seat upon the platform, rose and uttered these touching words: -
I am going to take a text for my brief address, and to say that my opinion differs from it. This text was left to us by one of the greatest of men, Shakespeare, who puts into the mouth of one of his characters these words:-
The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is oft interred with their bones.
It would not be wonderful if Shakespeare himself had sometimes held this view in the days in which he wrote, with Henry VIII. fresh in his memory, and James Stuart appearing in the near future. We are now in a happier age of the world, and are able to see that the good that men do lives after them, that it does not die, but is immortal as the human soul. Following this thought, let us turn back for a moment to the beginning of the education of the blind, to the time of that French philanthropist, Valentin Hauy, who being in Paris, chanced one evening to enter a cap in which a few blind musicians were playing on their instruments. Visitors who came and went derided them at will, flinging them a few sous now and then. The good Hauy felt sensibly the degraded condition of these helpless people, and at once began the labors which resulted in an establishment for the instruction and employment of the blind.

Biographical note: Julia Ward Howe (1819-1910) was an author, lecturer, poet, activist, abolitionist and leader in the Women's suffrage movement. Born in New York City to affluent parents, Ward Howe was well educated but expected to be a wife. In 1843 Ward Howe married Samuel Gridley Howe the founding director of Perkins after meeting him at a tour of the school. Despite conventional expectations that she not live a public life she initially published work anonymously before becoming a social activist that wrote, spoke, and worked for many social causes. She is commonly known for writing the words to “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and in 1908, she became the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts. In 1988 she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame.

I think this is from a printed 1500s copy in the University of Texas Law Library, but the online catalog only shows a mircrofilm copy of the 1480 Lyon edition.
I worked as the Latin expert on a case involving oil royalties from the Laguna Madre, which hung upon whether that body of water was included in a land patent granted by the Spanish crown when it owned Texas.
The Renaissance Latin commentary, which surrounds the medieval Spanish text of Alfonzo el Sabio's Siete Partidas was considered legally binding, and cites a bunch of Roman and medieval Latin law concerning the boundaries of bodies of water and their ownership, including Johannes Faber.
