Dollar Double Books 950, 1962

Cover Artist: Robert Bonfils

The term tête-bêche is used to refer to a single volume in which two texts are bound together, with one text rotated 180° relative to the other, such that when one text runs head-to-tail, the other runs tail-to-head. Etymology: from French meaning "head-to-toe", literally referring to a type of bed.

Books bound in this way have no back cover, but instead have two front covers and a single spine with two titles. When a reader reaches the end of the text of one of the works, the next page is the (upside-down) last page of the other work.

The format became widely known in the 1950s, when Ace Books began to publish its Ace Doubles. This was a line of tête-bêche format paperbacks that ran from 1952 until the early 1970s. The Ace Doubles binding was considered innovative, if somewhat gimmicky, at the time; the 18 October 1952 issue of Publishers Weekly describes it as a "trick format".

The tête-bêche format has been used for devotional books since the nineteenth century, and possibly earlier.

Perhaps that's why Dollar Double sarcastically chose that format for its first sleazy publication.

".. into a liquid sort of joyless laughter as I watched fate fall to its knees in a horrific and bloody defeat at the treacherous hands of a man who never believed in love. You are approaching me, bearing perfect coffee-stained teeth, extending cigarette-holding fingers like the claws of a beak caught in angry traps set in the forest of stolen hearts. Why can't I free myself from you? My dreams are interrupted by your voice, the things you used to say while I was sleeping next to you in January. I can still feel your fingers laced in between mine, locked in place by lies. I have been abandoned in the cold. I now belong to the winter."

Claire is so beautiful, proud to call her my best friend. This photo kind of makes it seem like she died or something, but I just liked the graffiti on the left and these photos together for some reason. Very haunting, but subtly because of the warm tones in the photo? Idk mann

Scanned this page because the girl was so cute. Love the old text too! Hope you can use it!

All sizes to see it in slightly better detail.

Used MS paint for the text and putting it all together.

I designed this »stencilled lettering« based on a beautiful Anglo–Saxon »stencil plate« from the ninth century, which I found in an old book written by Lewis F. Day, called »Lettering in Ornament«.

Typefaces in use:

Thomas Gabriels (Typejockeys) excellent, wedge serif book face »Premiéra«

Premiéra is a book typeface specifically designed to work in small sizes. It is available in three weights: the ‘Book’ for main text demands and two styles (Bold and Italic) to create different kind of emphasis.

A strong x-height and short ascender/descender make this very legible and elegant typeface very suitable for use in books and newspapers.

Beta is a test preview of the change that is getting ready to be implemented soon. It can be for a limited group of flickr members, intended to seek feedback and correct faults ( if any), before it is made public.

Change is good and public has always welcomed good changes. The preference for Windows XP by most people even after the introduction of Vista is a classic example of public acceptance. The public liked and preferred the predecessor ( Windows XP ) and the follower ( Windows 7 and Windows 8 ) versions of Vista. A change is good and often gladly welcomed by public, if it provides more utilities and user friendliness, without depriving even a single advantage of the predecessor.

The Beta version is unacceptable to the majority of Flickr users* ( who happened to experience it ) , because it's not user friendly and has only disadvantages to mention. *Please check the Beta feedback : Completed / Top ideas / Hot ideas

The layout itself is a disaster. Please check : Try our new photo experience beta / Comment box

However they try, it's quite evident that it's impossible to provide more space for descriptions, comment box, and comments; not to mention comments with pictures , group invites / awards. The more they try to fix it, the more cumbersome it becomes. The buddy icons now appear as dots making the page more unaesthetic than what you see in the earlier pictures of beta . They are desperately trying to make it appealing and user friendly, which is literally impossible with the proposed layout .

It's a big challenge for the programmers to try find means to provide more space in a vertical column which is already cramped.

Is it possible to make a rugby stadium inside a 100 square feet ground ?

Like the Manhattan's new Moma, this particular design is connected to a previous one, my Gallery Ying that was actually constructed last year.

People usually notice only the outside of cameras, and usually expect sleek, elegant features for new products. Very few will notice the elegance of some camera interiors, as well as moments of architecture In these unseen spaces. These moments vary significantly in quality from camera to camera. From my own modified vintage camera collection, I find that some of the most beautiful interior work is found in the Polaroid Swinger Model 20. If you own one of these, open it up and enjoy some subtle architectural moments.

Inspired by the experience of this, I've tried to design a New Wing to my previous gallery inside a camera. This New Wing will allow the gallery to exhibit a total of up to 29 photographs in addition to two possible lighted projections.

One of the main themes in architecture: to represent an outdoor space as an interior, and an interior space to suggest the outdoors is readily apparent inside this camera. Inside the quasi-bellows of this camera I can imagine a staircase in Venice extending down to the water on a moonlit night. In essence, that triggered in my mind the thought to fabricate a typical analog camera filmwinder to create additional space to exhibit the inside of this gallery. In the notes above there are barn doors which swing open to create a strong support for the structure but also allow play with the light in the exhibition space. 29 photographs would probably justify an increase in ticket prices.

If you haven't viewed my Gallery Ying, please please see the photo below or go to my link below. There is more text with explanations there about this project.

A fine example of the standards London Transport set for their signs in the 1930s - this of course built upon the work the previously privately owned Underground Group had developed followed the 1916 introduction of the typeface they commissioned from Edward Johnston and his later work on both typeface and logos. I suspect this may be from the post-1933 formation of LT - although it shows some evidence of the 1938 'Standard Signs Manual' LT developed. It shows not only the design and text to be used but also the strict admonition as to the requirements for proportionality in reproduction. One unusual later use of an early version of the typeface seen here is the "double V" for W.

It also shows one slight oddity for LT signs - they were under the responsibility of the Signals Engineer and Chief Engineer. This was due to the fact that the many illuminated signs, lit by electricity, were considered to be better managed by the Signals Dept (many signals also being at height and illuminated) and so ....

I was dreaming of Van Eyck fountains but ended up with Hogarth's Figures in a Tavern (ca. 1720-50) as an inspiration for a design of this vertical man-cave for the chess champion Magnus Carlsen.

A combination of so many things.

The entrance is that of a Japanese tea house but ends up on top more like a Dutch windmill.

The tavern interior has the directive of having no decorative reminders of Chess, except a perfectly square 2-foot entrance and square windows. Also the interior is luxuriously lined with rosewood and boxwood, the standard for common chess pieces.

The rear corner of the tavern ground floor has a collection of identical square wooden seats for Carlsen's friends to hang out. The windows seem to suggest an interior view of the world through the mind of a chess master.
