Non-destructive testing of the new lamp posts they installed a few days before in our street.
Presumably the attachment on the JCB clamps onto the lamp post, this then applies controlled vibrations to it. A device is attached lower down and records the vibrations, or lack of. Presumably the results indicate if the post is pooped, or the foundations.

Got a new toy today - the Canon IXUS 970.
I spent half of yesterday looking at camera reviews online only to find out that I hate every point & shoot camera out there. They tempt you with an exciting feature like 10x zoom only to disappoint you in another area like image quality. And I really can't stand those dumb-it-down-so-much cameras with "intelligent scene recognition and face detection and intelligent ISO and you don't even have to press the shutter because this camera will spot when you've framed a great shot and snap the picture for you!!". After a good 5+ hours of searching I realised I'd never be happy with anything, so today I just walked into a store and got the camera that seemed least crap.
That's what you get for being used to the quality and control of a DSLR.
Buy testing chambers for pharmaceuticals and electronic and electrical industry.
