This is a traverse board, ca 1800-1825. The traverse board (called rekenaar in Dutch, and renard in French) was used in northern European countries from at least the early 16th century until the 19th. By inserting pegs for the ship's direction and speed (as determined by ship's compass and the log and log glass), each half-hour (or hour) of the watch, the mean course and distance sailed could be determined [Tesseract, Catalogue 67, Summer 2000, item 25]. This is in the collection at The Mariners' Museum in Newport News, VA (accession # 2000.32.01)

A gigantic igloo, thought to be the world’s biggest and spanning the equivalent of 3.5 double decker buses near Yllas village, Finland, was transformed into an ice stage for the world’s first gig on an igloo.
The show saw UK progressive rock band, TesseracT perform on top of the immense snow structure for the Jägermeister Ice Cold Gig, which puts artists to the test as they perform in unconventional, ice cold conditions.

Designed and folded by me out of copy paper.
4 Fold Axis View
This design was 432 units. This design is a fractal of 36 cubes based off of Francecso Mancini's 6 cubes. The paper proportions were modeled by the original 6 interlocking cubes by Francesco Mancini (link below). They came out perfectly accurate to his original design. However, his original design was made loose for an easier assembly and thus my design is a bit loose. If I were to refold this, I would make it slightly tighter. It is definitely doable with the way I assembled it.
I call this design "Tesseract" since I believe it has a 4 dimensional feel to it and a tesseract is a 4 dimensional cube. The connection is purely artistic though. The color scheme is experimental here but I believe it came out very well in these photos for my artistic intentions here. I am not aware of any geometrical relation this design has to an actual tesseract unfortunately.
As for future variation on this design, I think replacing the macros with arrays instead of Francesco's 6 cubes could yield a beautiful design as well. I don't think I will do this anytime soon so I leave it up to whoever wants to do it. If I ever get time to do a variation on this design, I will probably try to interweave the cubes outside their macro sets for additional visual complexity instead of an array.
