Last Fall of Light over the Arched Bridge Over Mangartski Potok, Triglav National Park, Slovenia

Back to the stunning country of Slovenia for today's post and a wander through my many, many thousands of images taken during my three months over there last October, November and December. This particular day in early November had me decide to drive up the 6500ft mountain road of the awesome (and to some the terrifyingly high) Mangart Pass.

This pass has some truly outstanding views from up high but this one of the gorgeous arched bridge caught my attention as I descended down to the base of the pass. The scale of the mountains is beautifully shown here when compared to the gorge below. The way the light falls on the mountains themselves has them look three dimensional as the crags and cracks are either bathe in light or hidden in shadows.

Isn't it just stunning? I cannot wait to return in October to show my six workshop clients the views that I so enjoyed for months late last year. They will be astounded and left in awe, of that, there will be no doubt.

Kayla yanked Adrienne behind a dumpster a few yards from the door, pressing her back against the cold metal as she scanned the alley. It was the same narrow passage they’d jumped to upon arriving at the restaurant.

ā€œWhat was that about?ā€ Adrienne murmured, her voice slightly unsteady. ā€œI was just starting to feel the wine.ā€

Kayla held up a finger to her lips, a quiet shhh escaping her.

Just then, the side door flew open, and two men stepped into the alley. Their eyes swept up and down the dimly lit corridor.

ā€œThey’re not out here. Check the restroom, search the place!ā€ one ordered.

A second voice murmured, ā€œThey may have jumped.ā€

The man in the gray suit slipped back inside, but the one in black remained, his gaze fixed on the shadows.

Kayla and Adrienne were on high alert. He was one of them. Without hesitation, they shifted between dimensions, peering at him through the haze of the veil.

ā€œI saw our waiter speaking to the man in gray,ā€ Kayla whispered. ā€œThey were watching us. I knew something was off.ā€

Adrienne frowned. ā€œHow did the waiter know who we were?ā€

ā€œHe’s human, so I’m not sure. But if the reptiles in this timeline have started mixing their DNA with humans, it’s possible he was controlled—maybe even able to sense us. If that’s the case, we didn’t detect him at all. That’s what worries me.ā€

The man in the black suit prowled the alley, nostrils flaring.

Then, in a deep, guttural voice thick with mucus, he snarled, ā€œI smell you. You are here.ā€

In a blink, his form twisted, shifting into something monstrous. Scales rippled across his skin, his mouth stretching wide to reveal rows of jagged teeth dripping with spittle. A primal scream erupted from his throat, reverberating through the alley. He slashed the air with his talons ripping long claw marks in the steel dumpster.

Adrienne stiffened in horror. Even with the dimensional barrier protecting them, he felt terrifyingly close. She fought to suppress her own scream.

Kayla had seen this transformation before. She knew the effect it would have on Adrienne and instinctively wrapped her arm around her.

Then, as suddenly as he had changed, the reptile snapped back to his human disguise and vanished inside.

Coquihalla Canyon (Othello Tunnels) Provincial Park, BC.

There's an old saying that where there's a will, there's a way. I don't think I could ever be mistaken for being an optimist, but when I put my mind to something, when I really want it, there's nothing that I'll let stand in my way. Fortunately on this day it was only a 5' high fence.

The enduring impression from this trip follows the same line of thought. When everyone else said it couldn't be done, one man with the determination to get it done, built a series of tressels and tunnels above and through a terrifyingly intimidating canyon, that still stand as a testament to his will. It is a shining example of the indomitable spirit of man.

I have been to many airshows over many years and seen many aircraft perform many manoeuvres, and the Red Arrows synchro pair routine, where two aircraft fly towards each other with a closing speed of around 800mph, stands out as the single most exciting thing I have ever seen. Coloured smoke making pretty patterns in the sky is all very well, but this is ALWAYS terrifyingly thrilling. I first saw the Arrows in 1974 flying Folland Gnats over Torbay - one of those experiences that got me hooked on airshows. If you haven't seen them do this, if the opportunity arises, make an effort to see it just once in your life. They perform all around the world.

An evening at the Fair with my 11 year-old who, terrifyingly, has developed a taste for REALLY scary rides. Not me, Gov; I'd rather stay on the ground and take pictures of the lights or try and capture some motion blur (though those didn't go quite so well...).

Safely back home: playing with what I hope is a slightly retro, vibrant look. I came to photography too late to truly appreciate the impact of the choice of film on a resulting image. This postprocessing alternative was created using a ColourEfex Film Efex #Kodachrome 64 filter, which i liked for the strong contrast and bright colours. Then, given a slight tweak in Topaz to make it feel a bit more vintagey. Possibly.

A small, narrow fjord a little more than 2km long and hardly wide enough for our big ship to turn around in there: The mystic Trollfjorden.

From the net:

It may be only three kilometers long and 70 meters wide at the mouth, and Norway may have bigger, broader and deeper fjords than Trollfjorden, but if you measure the drama here per meter, there are few fjords that can compete! This is a channel that penetrates deep into the 1000 meter high Trolltindan, and finishes in a dead end in the dark and dramatic Raftsundet. The scenery here is terrifyingly imposing.

The Battle of Trollfjorden

In 1890, a clash broke out on Trollfjorden between tradition and modern times.

On the 6th March, in the middle of the fishing season, the fjord was full of cod. Steamboats were attempting to take all the fish for themselves, shutting out the old sail-driven fishing vessels.

However, the fishermen took matters into their own hands in order to put an end to the blockade, and fighting broke out.

Although the fishermen were doused with steaming hot water from the boilers, they eventually succeeded in breaking the blockade.

As I wandered along Climping beach, I found myself wondering how long it might take for those huge, cubic concrete blocks to be worn to sand? And that made me imagine, just for a moment, that I had been somehow reduced to a microscopic size and that the blocks actually were grains of sand. A little like sugar cubes might look to an ant perhaps.

But then I noticed that the remnants of those groynes looked a little like they might be the ancient skeletal remains of a terrifyingly enormous ichthyosaur; maybe the spine, or, worse, the teeth! Something like that.

After pondering on that for a while, I moved on to the thought that they were actually the teeth of an absent-minded giant’s comb, dislodged from a pocket as he retrieved his handkerchief in order to blow his nose, which made me consider the definition of the term ā€˜beachcombing’.

And then, it occurred to me that…

šŸŽ¶ Vaughan Williams - A Sea Symphony - Oramo

The relationship between men and ocean waves is as ancient and complex as the sea itself. At times, the ocean's might presents an awe-inspiring challenge, while at others, its waves are a source of primal exhilaration. This duality mirrors the human experience—we are both vulnerable amidst nature's forces and remarkably capable in harnessing them.

For seafarers aboard powerful ships, the vast force held within a single wave can be terrifyingly real. In a perfect storm, relentless waves become monstrous leviathans from the deep. They toss even the largest vessels like mere toys, threatening to capsize them or shatter them against hidden reefs. Stories of sailors battling the elements are woven into our maritime history, tales of courage and despair echoing against the relentless crash of the sea.

These very same waves hold an irresistible allure for the most daring among us. Surfers embody the other side of the men-versus-ocean story – not one of fear, but of thrilling defiance. Where the ship captain sees a wall of destruction, the surfer sees a fleeting opportunity. They dance with nature's fury, riding the crests of waves on fragile boards. In this act, they embrace the chaos of the ocean's power, finding a strange harmony amid the maelstrom.

The ocean reminds us that humanity, despite its technology and ambition, remains subject to the raw forces of nature. The captain and the surfer, though inhabiting seemingly opposite ends of the spectrum, are both engaged with the ocean's majesty. In their respective ways, men find both challenge and exhilarating freedom in the dynamic energy of the waves. There's a humbling power in witnessing – or even attempting to conquer – the sheer, untamable wildness of the sea.

Fey or Fay

In the English Language fey means otherworldly, able to see the future, or touched in the head. In popular culture the fey, if recognized at all, have been reduced to small, winged, humanoid, female creatures who are frequently portrayed in the nude.

Much to the common knowledge, the Fay are not; though akin to pixies and other winged creatures of the mystic realm, the classical beings of mischief and malice. They are capable of that, no doubt, but they are what you call the "nobler race" of all their kin. Mostly human, they have wonderful talents of magic, scribes, and metalwork (etc.), though contrary to human activities of 'overdoing' their craft to reducing forests for profit, Fay are one with nature. Described as one of the wisest and fairest beings, they possess longevity, yet can die of common causes like wounds, but invulnerable to poison and can heal wounds more easily than mortals. They have strange vulnerabilities, though, which can lead to death for them but not for us, like, sadly enough... a broken heart. They have a very playful nature, and more Fae die every Millennia thanks to them falling in love with a mortal they only set out to mess around with. You can tell they have died through a broken heart because the spot where the heart is placed under the skin and muscle turns black and as do their veins. They die with the look of love in their eyes and tears on their cheeks. The sight is terrifyingly sad and beautiful. Only very few Mortals have seen their mythical loves like this and most afterwards are left in such a mental state that they adopt the idea that they are not worthy of living, as they have hurt someone enough to death. They usual die the cruel death of suicide. This cannot be helped, because unless it was the Last Wish of the faerie to save this particular mortal, the rest of the fae cannot interrupt the natural cycle of the mortals life, even though it has already been touched by the magic of the Fay.

Slieve League Cliffs (or Sliabh Liag in Gaelic), situated on the south west coast of County Donegal, are said to be the one of the highest and finest marine cliffs in Europe. .

There are terrific views of the Atlantic Ocean, the Sligo Mountains and Donegal Bay as you walk towards the terrifyingly high top of Sliabh League, where the cliff face of Bunglas rises over 600m above the raging ocean. Experienced walkers only should venture beyond the viewing point onto One Man's Pass which loops around onto the Pilgrim's Path.

This is a sacred mountain, for over a thousand years there was a Christian pilgrimage, no doubt Sliabh League was a sacred mountain before the Christians arrived here

I love the dramatic Art Nouveau style entrances to the Metro stations designed by Hector Guimard for the Compagnie du MƩtropolitain de Paris. These beautiful works of art are the epitome of Parisian style.

Just finished this brilliant and deeply disturbing book by Irish author Paul Lynch, which deservedly won the Booker Prize in 2023.

If you ever wondered how a country can slide into authoritarianism, how law and order can break down, how people are 'disappeared', how a government turns on its own citizens, how families struggle to survive as a city comes under siege, how refugees flee across borders and into boats, this book will tell you how it happens. Beautifully written and terrifyingly prescient for the times we're living in, it's a book that will live with me for a long time.

Once small, high powered thruster technology became common, tuners started looking for ways to integrate them into racing. Highly illegal, and terrifyingly dangerous, the Dust Devil style of motorbike conversion quickly became the ride of choice for insatiable adrenaline junkies. The side to side instability of the bikes, combined with their tremendous speed makes them unsuitable for circuit racing. Drag racing however is another thing. Desert races are popular, despite the losers often left decorating the sand.

Located close to the Chao Phraya riverfront on Bangkok's west bank,

Wat Arun (the Temple of Dawn) is one of the city's most prominent landmarks; it's towering steeple-like stupa, surrounded by four smaller spires known as prangs, forms a unique shilouette, at first as reminiscent of a gothic cathedral as a normal Thai temple.

The temple itself is located behind the stupa/pagoda and is a fairly extensive complex founded in the late 18th century, but it is generally the giant spire-stupa, built in the first half of the 19th century, that visitors focus on.

The monument is almost entirely encrusted with porcelain mosaic decoration which extends to much of the figure sculpture (rows of crouching demons, monkey warriors and apsaras can be seen propping up the tower at various levels). Two terraces, one and two thirds up respectively, afford spectacular views over the temple complex and across the Chao Phraya and city centre beyond. The upper level however is only accessible via a terrifyingly steep staircase!

A while ago I heard from an old friend of mine. Jenna told me how much she loved my photography, something we all love to hear of course, whether it's from a fellow landscape obsessive or someone who does selfies with their iPhone and puts them on Instagram. She then went on to mention she was getting married next year and wondered whether I'd like to be her official wedding photographer. I was very flattered. Who wouldn't be thrilled to be entrusted with the responsibility of capturing those memories from one of outstanding days of another person's life? And presumably she was expecting to pay me for my services while I was doing it. I don't know how much wedding photographers generally charge, but they always seem to have an impressive armoury of equipment.

It didn't take me long to consider my response. Yes, I have two very nice cameras, either of which would be more than capable of the task on offer. I also seem to have amassed a collection of no less than six lenses. I'm not sure exactly how this has happened, although none of them came into my life as the free gift inside a box of Coco Pops - it's fair to say my bank balance would be considerably higher if my bids had been unsuccessful. They are all very nice lenses and I'm lucky to have been able to gradually add them to the inventory. But then none of them are the fabled "nifty fifty" or the 85mm F2 that I'm led to believe are standard tools of the trade. Nor do I have flashguns, lightboxes or any of the other mysterious looking gizmos that the professionals keep in their bags. I also thought of the photos I'd seen from a family wedding I'd attended a couple of years ago. As we gathered in the living room of the newlyweds to be presented with an endless loop of more than two thousand special moments from the big day, I could see there was a skill to it that clearly comes with a greater experience and thicker skin than mine. The shot of a mirror with the bride to be's eyes reflected in it stood out. A standard trick of the trade no doubt, but no less striking an image for it. It was all beyond me.

But more importantly than any of these potential shortcomings, the notion of having to move among a large number of people frightened the living daylights out of me. The very idea of all of that cajoling, chivvying and manhandling perfect strangers into position in order to grin vacantly in my direction as they wonder how much longer they'll have to wait before they can get to their free glass of bubbly and the canapes left me in a state of soft alarm. I would only know one person present, and as she would be the bride, it might be difficult to pass time with her in those idle moments of small talk that such occasions terrifyingly present. So while expressing my gratitude at being offered the job, I politely declined, explaining that it wasn't something I had the right tools for. All of the time I was thinking of Cape Cornwall in fact. One of the most appealing aspects of photography is the prospect of being totally alone in a remote location with only the gulls for company and the sound of the sea in my ears. It's my happy place.

I remembered a recent conversation with Lee. We'd been talking about the rise and rise of Andrew, a man who takes a very nice photograph indeed. We were worried that while our own photography was in danger of stagnation we'd noticed that Andrew's work seemed to be going from strength to strength. Lee mentioned that Andrew had "done" a wedding not long ago. He'd even acquired a nifty fifty and a flashgun apparently. I told Jenna I knew someone who might be interested and got in touch with him. Andrew was also very grateful to have been asked. He confirmed that yes indeed, he had done a wedding recently - as a favour to the bride, who happened to be his own sister. He confided that he hadn't really enjoyed the experience and wasn't planning on repeating it anytime soon. Like me, Andrew is happiest in his own company in places like this. He was at least in contact with two other people who are brave enough to do weddings, so I was at least able to send their details to my soon to be married friend.

So there you go. You knew it already of course, but we don't do weddings. What we do love doing is fiddling about with focus stacks at long abandoned oratories by the Edge of Eternity. After all, places like this were made for people like us. We don't need to be within reach of a fast food outlet or a coffee bar, because we brought our own along with us. Here we can lose ourselves in daydreams and not worry about whether we've included Great Auntie Nellie in quite as many photographs as we should have done, or if Uncle Derek's grin in the direction of the bridesmaids comes over as just a bit too lascivious. It's been a long few weeks since I last saw the sea, but maybe - just maybe it won't be too long again now.

I should stress that Great Auntie Nellie and Uncle Derek are products of my imagination. They are not your Great Auntie Nellie and/or your Uncle Derek, who I'm sure are upstanding and respectable members of the community. Have a good weekend everyone.

Peter Lorre starred in

Here is some history on the 1946 movie, The Beast with Five Fingers:

šŸŽ¬ Production & Source Material

* Original Story: The film is based on a 1919 short story of the same name by English author W. F. Harvey.

* Screenplay: The script was written by Curt Siodmak, a key figure in classic horror, also known for writing The Wolf Man (1941).

* Director: It was directed by Robert Florey, a French-American director who had roots in German Expressionism, a style that clearly influenced the film's eerie atmosphere and visuals.

* Studio Rarity: It was Warner Bros.'s only foray into the horror genre in the 1940s.

* Lorre's Last for Warner Bros.: This film marked Peter Lorre's final film with Warner Bros. He plays Hilary Cummins, the eccentric, book-obsessed secretary.

* Casting Note: The role Lorre took was originally intended for actor Paul Henreid, who reportedly turned it down, saying he wasn't "wild to play against a dead hand."

šŸ“œ Plot and Themes

* Setting: The story is set in a gloomy, secluded Renaissance mansion in a turn-of-the-century Italian village.

* The Setup: The plot centers on the death of Francis Ingram (Victor Francen), a wealthy, partially paralyzed concert pianist. His death immediately leads to acrimony among the people gathered for the reading of his will, including his nurse, his nephew, and Lorre's character, Hilary Cummins.

* The Menace: The bizarre events begin when a severed, reanimated human hand—presumably Ingram's left, non-paralyzed hand—is discovered missing from his coffin. This disembodied hand then begins to haunt and apparently commit murder within the villa.

* Psychological Thriller: The film masterfully balances the supernatural element (the killer hand) with a psychological one, heavily suggesting that Peter Lorre's character is suffering from a mental breakdown and hallucinating the hand, a common ambiguity in horror of the era. The famous ending shifts heavily toward the psychological explanation.

✨ Legacy and Influence

* Special Effects: The movie is noted for its special effects, which used various techniques, including wires and reverse-motion photography, to make the crawling hand look terrifyingly real.

* The "Thing": This film's iconic disembodied hand is widely cited as the direct inspiration for the character "Thing" from The Addams Family, which was later popularized by cartoonist Charles Addams.

The unique combination of classic gothic mystery, murder, and the chilling presence of the independent hand made it a memorable and influential horror film.

Besides falling asleep, falling for something or someone is the next most similar thing to feeling as if we inhabit a dream.

In between nostalgia and the weight of things not meant to be, the feeling of betrayal is the one we end up kissing the hardest. We plant our throne so high up in the skies, that when it remains uncomfortable no matter how often we try to flower it or if we find out that in the end that kingdom does not belong to us anymore, disappointment locks us inside a cell so terrifyingly high too, that descending into the abyss sounds more comfortable than facing the fear of falling without it ever materialising.

The silence is so strong, giving up so harsh. And here I am rising myself to the skies trying to look at the stars a bit nearer. I’m shooting for them this time, carrying my longing soul and broken heart towards the universe so it can heal amongst the cosmos and let me rest a bit easier tonight. 🌟

The Archer unit within the Skrall Military is a highly trained warrior in multiple forms of weapons combat, but primarily trained in the use of the traditional heavy bow. The archers, while not as prominent on the battle field as the infantry, are considered an elite unit due to their high level of training and are a feared opponent. The archer, like all units of the Skrall military under the command of Matu, are highly loyal to Matu and consider the battlefield as a place to obtain honor and glory. Win or lose, the lust for battle resides within every Skrall warrior.

The day we were there it was hard to see any view without people. I guess I could have tried a long exposure but most of these were not moving much. Also the rough sea would have looked flat. So there we have the waiting people but the giant will not come because he is afraid of a baby. Or so the legend says

"Finn the Irish giant is having trouble with someone across the water. The Scottish giant Benandonner is threatening Ireland. An enraged Finn grabs chunks of the Antrim coast and throws them into the sea. The rock forms a path for Finn to follow and teach Benandonner a lesson.

Bad idea – Benandonner is terrifyingly massive. Finn beats a hasty retreat, followed by the giant, only to be saved by Finn’s quick-thinking wife who disguised him as a baby. The angry Scot saw the baby and decided if the child was that big, the daddy must be really huge. :) Aren't wives clever?

The Archer unit within the Skrall Military is a highly trained warrior in multiple forms of weapons combat, but primarily trained in the use of the traditional heavy bow. The archers, while not as prominent on the battle field as the infantry, are considered an elite unit due to their high level of training and are a feared opponent. Although the infantry are feared and terrifyingly strong warriors, the archers are typically stronger and are nearly as devastating at close quarters as they are at a distance. The archer, like all units of the Skrall military under the command of Matu, are highly loyal to Matu and consider the battlefield as a place to obtain honor and glory. Win or lose, the lust for battle resides within every Skrall warrior.

One of those nameless terrifyingly toothy wild things from Maurice Sendak's 'Where the Wild Things Are."

A mean, agile, and utterly ridiculous high-speed drift trike, the Chunkeh Munkeh is Gnasher Jack’s pride and joy, built for high-speed ambushes, hard-hitting firepower, and absolutely no subtlety. Jack stole the core power system from a Bastion during a particularly daring heist, and ever since, he’s been tearing through the Shattersea, cackling like a lunatic.

Key Features:

Dual 15mm Heavy Machine Guns – Mounted symmetrically on either side of the cockpit, these heavy hitters spit lead like a firehose, perfect for tearing up convoys, punching through armour, and sending a proper message. "Oi! You lot ever danced with a storm o’ bullets? ā€˜Cause now’s your chance!"

Lightweight G.A.S. Launcher (Dorsal Mounted) – A small but efficient Grav-Anchor System mounted directly to the frame, allowing Jack to hook onto gravity wells and slingshot himself into (or out of) trouble. He’s not the best at using it (ā€Ahh, just wing it, yeah?ā€), but it gets the job done.

Off-Road Long Travel Tricycle Suspension – The Chunkeh Munkeh’s absurdly long front fork absorbs the worst of the Shattersea’s terrain, while the rear wheel provide just the right amount of instability for those insane high-speed chases. It rides rough, unstable, and terrifyingly fast—just how Jack likes it.

Stolen Micro-Arc Reactor (Primary Power Source) – The real crown jewel—a compact, high-efficiency reactor Jack boosted from a Bastion vault. This rare piece of tech gives Chunkeh Munkeh near-limitless energy, allowing long-range raids, sustained combat, and an unhealthy amount of reckless stunts.

"Ohhh, don’t look so glum, mate! You’ve just been had by Gnasher Jack ā€˜imself! That’s a story worth tellin’, innit?"

A whole day with nothing to remind me I’m a 21st century man. Gorgeous tea dress, wonderful retro makeup job, sensible heels and tights, an authentic handbag with my Chanel perfume. It was…..surreal and intimately delightful ā¤ļøšŸ‘—ļøā€āš§ļø
