Parc Natural del Desert de les Palmes.

Benicàssim (Castelló/ Spain)

The Desert de les Palmes it has unique and magnificent natural characteristics, which inspired the ancient Barefoot Carmelites to choose it as a location for their monastery.

The word desert, in terms of the Carmelites and their practices, can also be considered to refer to solitary places that are away from population. They believed that the Desert de les Palmes is like a spiritual refuge for them.

The Desert de les Palmes Natural Park was declared to be a protected area on the 16th October 1989. It occupies a space of 3200 hectares.

The Sanskrit terms sādhu ("good man") and sādhvī ("good woman") refer to renouncers who have chosen to live a life apart from or on the edges of society to focus on their own spiritual practice.

The words come from the root sādh, which means "reach one's goal", "make straight", or "gain power over". The same root is used in the word sādhanā, which means "spiritual practice

Making a person and watching it grow up provides all of the good feelings and lots of the bad ones. Makes me wonder if all parents feel like pioneers. I'll just be over here, somewhere between coming to terms with it and feeling grateful.

Adelpha butterflies are colloquially known as 'Sisters'. In terms of appearance they are reminiscent of the White Admirals ( Limenitis ) of Eurasia, and share with them a fondness for flitting gracefully around the lower branches of trees in the dappled sunlight of the forest.

There are 85 known species of Adelpha, all except two of which are confined to Central and South America. The butterflies are characterised by having a distinctive blackish marbled pattern overlaid on a brown ground colour; and by the presence of a broad orange or white band on the forewings. The hindwings of most species have a white median band.

Adelpha lycorias occurs from Mexico to Paraguay, and also in the Atlantic cloudforests of Brazil.

Adelpha lycorias is commonest in cloudforest habitats between about 500-1500m but can be found from sea level up to at least 2400m.

The enormous Langjökull Glacier coming to terms with the ground. It forms a lake, which is by definition a body of water surrounded by land. On the other hand, this is an island (Iceland), and an island is land completely surrounded by water.

So the water wins, because it's both all around the island, and on it, everywhere. :)

Slight variation in terms of framing and composition than the previous image.

Night shot, taken from Colle Nivolet (2.612 m), Gran Paradiso National Park, Italy, looking in direction of the Grande Aiguille Rouge (3.482 m), taking advantage of the play of artificial light coming from two dams below: lake Serrù and Agnel.

In addition, to the east (left of the photo), the rising Moon began to provide some extra soft lighting.

The large rock in the foreground seemed really proper to symbolize the idea of a creature of the night.

Spot reached after several hours hiking, because the road was still blocked down below in the valley, due to the snow.

Some to these birds don’t come out to play in the early morning hours and therefore the lighting is not always the most favorable. A Roseate Spoonbill keeps a watchful eye on that pesky paddler as it rests on an old tree limb stuck in the mud on Horsepen Bayou. The other thing is that we hardly ever see mature adults and see most younger Spoonbills such as this one. This one is not yet wearing those crimson highlights on the wings.

… and now it is December and officially, in meteorological terms, it is winter.

But for me winter began firmly in mid November when the snow together with a week of bitingly cold sub-zero days and nights stamped themselves on our world.

The trees are bare, the autumn leaves have gone, and the days get shorter. So sunlight and sunshine are the most valued events ... and indoor shooting is more than ever the norm.

Did I really manage 27 uploads this November? That equals October. The month seemed to be dominated by the demands of the snow and ice, but my monthly collage suggests I did. 😊

As ever - many thanks to everyone who has visited my photostream and for the comments and faves.

All my collages are collected here: At a Glance

Yesterday was my first almost full day of photography in many months.... Unfortunately, the migration is extremely slow and not too many interesting birds were at the rendez-vous... I think this Sapsucker is the bird that gave me the best photo opportunities ... Today, despite the heat and the sun shining for a good portion of the day, was even more limited in terms of photography... oh well... there is still a bit of tonight and hopefully there will be a tomorrow! :)

Miami is a seaport city at the southeastern corner of the U.S. state of Florida and its Atlantic coast. As the seat of Miami-Dade County, the municipality is the principal, central, and the most populous city of the Miami metropolitan area and part of the second-most populous metropolis in the southeastern United States.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Miami's metro area is the eighth-most populous and fourth-largest urban area in the U.S., with a population of around 5.5 million.

Miami is a major center, and a leader in finance, commerce, culture, media, entertainment, the arts, and international trade. In 2012, Miami was classified as an Alpha−World City in the World Cities Study Group's inventory. In 2010, Miami ranked seventh in the United States in terms of finance, commerce, culture, entertainment, fashion, education, and other sectors. It ranked 33rd among global cities. In 2008, Forbes magazine ranked Miami "America's Cleanest City", for its year-round good air quality, vast green spaces, clean drinking water, clean streets, and citywide recycling programs.

According to a 2009 UBS study of 73 world cities, Miami was ranked as the richest city in the United States, and the world's fifth-richest city in terms of purchasing power. Miami is nicknamed the "Capital of Latin America" and is the largest city with a Cuban-American plurality.

Miami has the third tallest skyline in the U.S. with over 300 high-rises. Downtown Miami is home to the largest concentration of international banks in the United States, and many large national and international companies. The Civic Center is a major center for hospitals, research institutes, medical centers, and biotechnology industries.

For more than two decades, the Port of Miami, known as the "Cruise Capital of the World", has been the number one cruise passenger port in the world. It accommodates some of the world's largest cruise ships and operations and is the busiest port in both passenger traffic and cruise lines.

Metropolitan Miami is the major tourism hub in the American South, number two in the U.S. after New York City and number 13 in the world, including the popular destination of Miami Beach.

We have a major issue in terms of the way beauty is identified in America. Often, people who are white are seen as more beautiful when this is a very damaging and harmful concept. Beauty is also attached to body image issues in terms of weight which is unattainable for many. In addition, ageism is often a huge part of why some people are excluded from being thought of as attractive or beautiful.

I think as photographers, we are constantly trying to find meaning and beauty if real life. We also, in my opinion, as artists, must examine current stereotypes and challenge them.

I was feeling a little bipolar when I saw this couple. I had left the Mitski stage early to run over to see George Clinton only to be told with all of us photographers actually in the photopit that, as a last minute decision, George Clinton had decided not to allow photographers to photograph him. Now, this is a problem from the immediate perspective of wanting to photograph him but it's also the sudden blow and message this sends loud and clear" "I'm an artist and you aren't!" This also assumes that the photographers are not music fans, themselves. After clearing the photopit last minute, George Clinton went on late and ran into The Feelies set (The Feelies very rarely tour and haven't been to Chicago in a few years).

But, after I photographed The Feelies, I found myself watching this older couple who were probably in their 50s or even 60s dancing as if they were in their 20s and I was actually moved to tears with the beauty of it all. They moved effortlessly and gracefully and it made me feel the depth of their beauty and love for the music.

See the beauty in these moments...life has many moments of tragedy but we can learn that the realm of human experience is a vast and wondrous thing for each day we ourselves are lucky to be alive.

What’s next after the Sony alpha 1 since it appears that Sony has a few more cameras (FF or otherwise) to announce over the next 2 months?

In terms of cameras;

1) A74 with a rumored 30-32mp sensor. We should see faster sensor readout and with the new Bionz XR processor, better AF and fps. Hopefully Nikon will use this sensor for their next Z6iii.

2) A7R5 is not due till the end of 2021. Highly likely the same 61mp sensor will be retained. The A1 or α1 has only 9% more linear resolution than the A7R3 and the A7R4 in turn has only 10% more linear resolution than the A1. Perhaps Sony will use a higher mp sensor with the new more capable Bionz XR processor since Canon has been rumored to be working on a very high resolution (90mp?) mirrorless body. 61mp to 102mp is just around 30% more linear resolution, roughly similar to going from 24mp to 42mp. Sony will need better IBIS but there’s no improvement in IBIS with the latest A1. Meanwhile Nikon is rumored to be using a 61mp sensor on their next pro specced Z8 camera, the Z6 and Z7 series are not considered pro-spec by Nikon.

3) If A7R5 does get a significant boost in resolution, Sony might finally do a high end sports oriented APS-C body with 30+mp? 90mp FF sensor translates to a 39mp APS-C sensor. Canon’s existing APS-C (1.6 crop) EOS M6 is already at 32.5mp.

4) Curved sensor RX1. The RX1Rii successor is 1 year behind schedule and Sony has finally just released the FE 35mm f1.4 GM, a lens that many speculated was held back to protect sales of the RX1 series in the past. A curved sensor RX1 camera is possible although there is no economies of scale for such a sensor which is most suited for fixed lens cameras currently. There are only that many fixed lens large sensor compacts. Perhaps Ricoh GR (Leica Q?) and Fuji X100 will get a curved sensor in their next iteration? Would be great if Ricoh can leverage on a curve sensor for a more compact lens and do away with their failure prone retractable lens barrel in the Ricoh GR series.

5) Canon EOS-R1 flagship!

In terms of lenses;

1) The Voigtlander 35mm f2.0 APO Lanthar is really happening! I talked about Voigtlander making APO Lanthars here previously; flic.kr/p/2cqYQa4 The 50mm f2.0 APO is already out and now the 35mm, next 28mm perhaps?

2) The Canon RF roadmap has more unique lenses to be released;

a) AF tilt-shift TSR 14mm f4L & TSR 24mm f3.5L (all

tilt-shift lenses thus far are manual focus only).

b) RF 10-24mm f4L, widest hyper-wide zoom.

c) RF 135mm f1.4L will be huge but should be way

smaller than a 200mm f2.0.

d) RF 1,200mm f8L

The terms "red pill" and "blue pill" refer to a choice between the willingness to learn a potentially unsettling or life-changing truth by taking the red pill or remaining in contented ignorance with the blue pill. The terms refer to a scene in the 1999 film The Matrix.

Meet the "mad hatter"; "You take the blue pill... the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill... you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes."

Interesting...

update: I think the original terms of service also included this wording. In any case, looks like I'll be watermarking like crazy :( I hate watermarks. & back to low res images :(

Tested this thing out today. The photo mode is quite an improvement, but camera inertion (and other minor stuff, too) really gives me a headache when trying to fine-tune here and there. I'd say that Forza's solution still pretty much owns pCars2's in terms of careful & accurate camera positioning, which is much more important at times than image filters and Saturation sliders. Just sayin'.

===Project C.A.R.S. 2, PC

-No Photoshop or any other post-process editing, just in-game tools & filters;

-No ReShade and stuff, because why even bother when the game has lots of post-proc sliders to practice with;

-I also forgot to re-set MSI Afterburner's screencap feature to grab a lossless .png shot, and took a standard .jpg instead. But hey, it adds a bit to the atmosphere (according to filter I chose there, I think) :D

CTN on Overshadowed

I've always been conflicted as to my feelings about Chinatowns, the hybrid nature of the environment throws me off in terms of how I want to capture it. Visually the space is very much like what I shoot when I'm back home in Hong Kong, it is dense, bright and textured. Yet the nature of the environment acts very much like the western city it is in, isolated, detached and common. It is exactly what it is, a recreation of one's natural habitat in a foreign land, a cultural theme park within a few city blocks.

Like a theme park, I find the familiar endearing and the differences absolutely annoying. Unable to accept the space for what it is, I complain about the things they aren't doing 'right', how it's done better back home, how this is just a mask of signs and lights thrown on to create an illusion of familiarity. I feel like a parent projecting their failures on to their children, how this space disappoints me as it doesn't live up to the standards I wish it can achieve.

When in fact, it is the fusion of the familiar with the odd that reminds me of the confused nature of my own identity. The ever difficult balancing act of assimilation into the culture of my adopted hometown, while desperately trying to hold onto whatever is left of my own. A visit to Chinatown reminds me of how futile my attempts are to remain Chinese while becoming American.

As I'm about to leave New York for another city, I've decided to confront this space, to stop trying to make it something it's not. To finally see it for what it is before trying to figure out another one. And in the process of understanding this hybrid space, maybe it'll allow myself to accept the fact that I've become what musically would be equivalent to a Canto Pop/Hip hop mashup. A set of opposing beats jammed together to form something that's confusing and fucked up, but has the potential to be quite interesting with some finessing.

This self portrait took much longer to realize than anticipated.

- 1, create slide in Keynote with jumbled camera terms.

- 2, take a photo of the slide with a film camera on B&W film so it will project nicely.

- 3, develop, dry, trim, and mount frame into slide carrier for the projector.

- 4, set up the old Argus projector, using a lampshade as a temporary replacement for my head (ya, I'm THAT guy at the party).

- 5, shoot, shoot, and shoot some more until you think you have a shot that somewhat aligns with the vision in your head. Speaking of vision... I still see spots out of my right eye from that darned projector ;)

- 6, post to flickr!

Puerto Ayora, the largest in terms of population and size in the Galápagos, is a surprise to most visitors, who don’t expect to find anything but plants and animals on the islands. Puerto Ayora looks and feels like a fairly prosperous mainland Ecuadorian coastal town, despite the sea lions and pelicans hanging around the waterfront. Most of the hotels, restaurants and tourist facilities line Avenida Charles Darwin, and the airport is on Isla Baltra, around an hour away to the north.

Pastel on newsprint

I made this shortly after I started doing art at age 56. There was no preconceived idea. I just picked up a piece of pastel and started moving my hand and arm on the paper. This is the image that resulted. When I showed it to the teacher of an art class I had just started, he said "What were you on when you did THAT?", lol! The answer: nothing. I was just following the impulses as they popped up within. I made this in the horizontal orientation. It was only after it was done and I turned it to this vertical orientation that I saw that it resembled a serpent.

At the time, and for years prior, I spent many hours each day in mantra meditation, pranayama breathing, and yoga asanas, and had experienced many moments of expanded awareness and bliss. But I knew almost nothing about kundalini or its awakening.

I now know that the Sanskrit word "kundalini" means "coiled one". In the Dharma religions, it is a primal energy, or shakti, located at the base of the spine. Different spiritual traditions teach methods of "awakening" kundalini for the purpose of reaching spiritual enlightenment. Kundalini is described as lying "coiled" at the base of the spine, represented as either a goddess or sleeping serpent waiting to be awakened. ... To me, this image reflects the creative phase of the creation/maintenance/destruction cycle.

Kundalini awakening is said to result in deep meditation, enlightenment and bliss. This awakening involves the Kundalini physically moving up the central channel to reach within the Sahasrara Chakra at the top of the head. Many systems of yoga focus on the awakening of Kundalini through meditation, pranayama breathing, the practice of asana and chanting of mantras. In physical terms, many report the Kundalini experience to be a feeling of electric current running along the spine.

—Adapted from Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kundalini

Also, " ... The Supreme Brahman is described as the swallower, devourer (attā = soul) of the universe; for just as he creates and maintains it, he destroys it also. But where does it go when it is destroyed? One answer may be that it simply vanishes. But the Upanishads are opposed to such an idea of destruction. Only the forms and shapes of the world are gone, but not the being of the world, which is the Being of the Brahman. Then what happens to the world? It is absorbed, assimilated to the Brahman. The Brahman swallows, absorbs, assimilates the world to itself."

when i say troop ...i am not perchance thinking in military terms ,but more as in a Cirque , performance or traveling comraderie - troop.

Foraging troops often form for the fall and winter season.Three species on the Island are quite usual to be in the mix,.Of these "our chickadee' would be most often the "basis" of these troops,- as they move and flit through the trees, bush and within forest canopy.

Bushtits,juncos, as well as sparrow,woodpecker ,warbler and kinglet species can often be other common participants - joining in these merry groups during the months.of the non breeding season

Often the largest type elements on 19th century gravestone inscriptions was the word "died." As if to dispel any lingering doubts. It really hits you as you walk through the older cemeteries seeing the word repeated over and over on literally every stone. It really adds a sense of grimness to these already sad places, compounded by the weathered and distressed nature of the stones. Use of the word "died" gradually faded away over the years. Generally it is now represented by a hyphen between the birth and death years. No one needs to be reminded. You can read between the lines.

In terms of photography, these are weird days for me. I am not totally happy with anything I come up with. When I look at my photos, my mind always finds something to nag and criticize. And yet, somehow, on a more emotional level, I like the images. So I am more or less torn between the head and the heart when I jude my own shots. This is all true for this image, too. There are many things to criticize (sharpness, the composition with all its distracting elements) and yet I am touched by this image and I feel that it is wonderful.

This inner conflict is why I often say that a shot of mine is not perfect or that it has several flaws when at the same time many of your totally love it. It is not false modesty but in all honesty serious uncertainty.

I don't know if all this blabbering makes any sense to you, so I'll just shut up now.

Enjoy!

I keep going through phases of what I am after in terms of style... One day I'm into tons of colors and effects, the next I'm into really limited colors with a stripped-down style. At the moment I am in a "less is more" mindset. I always like pieces best when they are sketches before all the glitter, smoke and mirrors. This chrome & black was supposed to be even simpler than it is, and more graphic looking than it ended up. I never intended to use any other colors besides chrome, black, and white, but the green in my bag kept nagging me. Only had a couple hours, so it doesn't have all the effects and tricks a "piece" normally does, but like I said, that's kind of the point.

And here, in strictly musical terms, the journey begins. It does so with Burning Spear (Winston Rodney), the Jamaican roots reggae singer par excellence “and who everyone wants to see once in their life”, nourishing a promising roots-tinged stage with his long-awaited return to the stage. Because yes, the line-up goes on (big) with the most mystical roots reggae represented by Spear himself, along with other key figures of the genre such as Luciano, Black Uhuru, The Abyssinians, Max Romeo, Clinton Fearon or Sly Dunbar and The Revolutionaries; but it also branches out towards the contemporary reggae of the Marley’s (Damian ‘Jr. Gong‘ and Julian), Morgan Heritage or Alborosie; including afrobeats led by Davido and a diverse range of music, like the festival itself, where there is no shortage of ska (The Skatalites), dub (O.B.F), dancehall (Sean Paul), hip hop (Mala Rodríguez) or cumbia (La Dame Blanche). There will also be tributes to reggae legends that lost their voices during the pandemic.
