This large heron was perched on a pier support post behind the beautiful Fisherman's Village in Punta Gorda, Florida over the Christmas holiday. A dramatic sunset was taking place over the harbor and so I slowly worked my way around to be in a position to capture the heron's silhouette against the backdrop of light and color. Meanwhile, the bird kept a wary eye on me... ready to fly at any moment. In this shot, it is crowching before springing into flight. It landed upon the roof of the mall.
In processing this image, I used Photoshop's Dehaze tool to further define the clouds.

A macro view of a tight knot in a mini bungee cord with complex light. The frame represents a span of ⅝ -of-an-inch across.
I spent an inordinate amount of time getting the composition right for this image. As it turns out, that was the easy part. Correctly illuminating the scene was exponentially more challenging; see below for details.
Strobist/technical info:
The scene was illuminated by two Nikon SB900 speedlights, a steady LED light, and the blue LED of a Coast TX10 Quad Color flashlight.
The SB900s were positioned at 9- and 4-o'clock, one-foot above and two feet away from the bungee knot. They were fired in Manual Mode @ ¼ power through Neewer 24" x 24" soft boxes. A steady LED light was placed at 11-o'clock and aimed hard-right behind the subject. The blue LED of the TX 10 was aimed from 4-o'clock and slightly below the subject. The LEDs were exposed for ⅛ s.
The SB900s were triggered by three PocketWizard Plus X flash triggers.
Lens: Vega 11U f2.8 50mm attached to a bellows extended 44mm.
Walking directly towards the photographer as this photo was taken, the musk ox calf was on a mission. The cow musk ox was on the other side of a branch of the Sag River and the calf was looking for a safe place to cross. After this photo was taken, the calf walked another 100 yards before finally crossing the river to its waiting mother.
This experience was both exhilerating and frightening. The chance to have a musk ox calf walk by so close was an amazing experience, however, with the calf's mother only 50 feet away, made it a tense situation. As the camera shutter was clicking, my peripheral vision was looking for any sudden movement from across the river. Thankfully, the cow musk ox saw no threat from the photographer.

After a three hour or so wait between the north bound and south bound Canyon trains, Watco's Agawa Canyon passenger trains returns south rolling across possibly the most well known spot on the entire former Algoma Central railroad. Unlike last year's trip to the bridge it wasn't a complete cloud screwing, only 1/2. 30 seconds makes a lot of difference and boy I am glad they weren't 30 seconds later. The southbound Canyon train and a northbound cloud met perfectly in the middle of the famed bridge making for a rather tense moment hoping the train would at least turn enough before the cloud took over the scene. Also unlike last year's fall, colors on the north side of Lake Superior were very non uniform and spotty with spots being a mix of yet to turn, half turned, peak and past all in one spot just like here. Closer to the Soo it was a lot more noticeable with lots of greens and then a great peak patch mixed in.
With a "chapeau" to Sam Nimitz who recently reminded me of the possibilities of these wondrous little dandelion heads. Merci, mon ami !!

The performance of the Frecce Tricolori had two components. The first was like poetry, with the aircraft engaging in well-choreographed loops and fly-passes. The second component included heart-stopping, adrenaline-pumping moments like this. I am glad that I was able to nail this one to perfection.

Thunderstorm passing through the Sierra. This whole scene was surreal to me as there was a thunderstorm passing, lightning everywhere, and dead trouts in the water, felt like the end of times, if it was this beautiful!

Conveniently enough, I had to make a short visit to the doctor yesterday, and could make this photo of Larios street.
Larios street is one of the main streets in Málaga, and is usually really busy and thriving. Now, it is very calm, but it is a tense calm, hoping that the situation improves quickly and it can restore its usual life
