The first bank to open in the city was the Exeter Bank on the 9th July 1769, in premises adjoining the Royal Clarence Hotel in Cathedral Yard. Partners in the bank were John Duntze, William Mackworth Praed, Joseph Sanders and Daniel Hamilton. The hotel and the bank buildings were designed and built by Praed, who also had banking interests in London. Sir John Duntze was already a wealthy wool merchant and was MP for Tiverton. Like John Baring he was a German migrant.

The earliest note issued by the Exeter Bank was in 1791. Most private banks issued notes in £5 and £10 denominations and, after 1828, they were prohibited from issuing one pound notes.

In July 1810, 500 prominent Exeter citizens gave a vote of confidence in the bank after a local bank collapsed.

A case of forgery in 1818, involved Exeter Bank notes. Samuel Holmyard was found guilty of printing forged notes in his workshop in Sun Lane, off South Street. He was hanged at the Exeter temporary gallows at Magdalen Road—fifty years later James Cossins wrote of the execution:

"Homeyard was taken to be hung at Magdalen temporary drop for forgery, Nov. 13th 1818, he being the first hanged by the city authorities for thirty-two years. A large crowd accompanied him. He was sitting in a cart, with a book in his hand, his coffin beside him, the clergyman walking by the side."

The Exeter Bank was involved in another case of forgery in 1829, when a five pound note was received by the bank from Mr Medland's shop near the Half Moon Inn. The bank took the note to the Bank of England in Southernhay a few days later, where upon inspection it was found to be a forgery. An investigation took place which traced the note to a William Notley who had tried to purchase from Mr Medland's shop two pairs of stockings, worth five shillings and sixpence. Notley was found guilty of passing a forged note and was sentenced to hang.

In 1896 a second branch of the bank was opened in Exmouth, followed by a branch in Budleigh Salterton. By this time the bank was known as the Exeter Bank of Sanders and Co. In February 1901, the Exeter Bank and the City Bank which was situated on the corner of Broadgate, amalgamated. They were the last two private banks in the city. In October 1905, the old bank premises were put up for sale, and the staff moved to the City Bank. It was purchased by Deller's of Paignton, and became the first Deller's Cafe in the city. Through a series of mergers the Exeter Bank became part of the National Provincial Bank in 1918, which eventually became the National Westminster Bank. www.exetermemories.co.uk/em/banks.php

I'm afraid this is as exciting as it got for traction at Stroud today after the RHTT Skips had gone through!

When you clear the brush in an abandoned cemetery, it asks you if you'd like to stay. Hung around for a while, temporary resident in the land of the living dead. You've spent a few hours, why not a few years? But I've got kilometers to go before I sleep. This time of the year, Saunders Cemetery catches the last of the aching light, every desperate fading ray of it across the neighboring fields. Bright and golden, winding around like water down the drain. Dripping off the autumn leaves, pooling in letters carved centuries ago. Stone-faced history, come and call me, I answer every time. Now that I've adopted this one, it'll be hard to let it go. When you know that you might be the only one who cares, it's hard to walk away.

The door of the truck says "IRON", so I'd guess that the MTA's Elevated Iron Fabrication team is doing some work here on the elevated structure of the Jamaica Line (J and Z trains).

This section of the Jamaica Line between the Alabama Avenue and Cypress Hills stations was originally used by the old Lexington Avenue and Broadway Els, and is said to be the oldest elevated structure in the subway system. The part that runs between Alabama and Schenck Avenues opened in 1885, and the rest of it, including what you see above, opened in 1893.

According to Forgotten New York, a little diagonal beam found on the elevated structure here (mostly obscured from view above, but clearly visible here) is the last remnant of an old connection to the Atlantic Branch of the Long Island Rail Road that was in service from about 1898 to 1917, cutting through the block now occupied by the old Blue Ridge Farms processing plant.

British postcard in the Picturegoer Series, London, no. 94.

American actress Mildred Davis (1901-1969) appeared in fifteen of Harold Lloyd's classic silent comedies and eventually married him.

Mildred Hillary Davis was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1901. She was the daughter of Howard Beckett Davis and she was the sister of actor Jack Davis. Mildred was educated at the Friends School in Philadelphia. After spending several years studying, she travelled to Los Angeles hoping for a role in a film. After appearing in several small roles, she caught the attention of Hal Roach, who pointed her out to comedian Harold Lloyd. Lloyd was looking for a leading lady to replace Bebe Daniels. He cast Davis as 'the girl' in his comedy short From Hand to Mouth (Alfred J. Goulding, Hal Roach, 1919). It would be the first of fifteen films they would star in together. These included His Royal Slyness (Hal Roach, 1920) with Snub Pollard, A Sailor-Made Man (Fred Newmeyer, 1921). the box-office hit Dr. Jack (Fred Newmeyer, 1922) and the popular family comedy Grandma's Boy (Fred Newmeyer, 1922) with Anna Townsend.

Mildred Davis also co-starred with Harold Lloyd in the classic Safety Last! (Sam Taylor, Fred Newmeyer, 1923). Safety Last! includes one of the most famous images from the silent film era: Lloyd clutching the hands of a large clock as he dangles from the outside of a skyscraper above moving traffic. The film was highly successful and critically hailed, and it cemented Lloyd's status as a major figure in silent films. In 1923, Davis and Lloyd married. After marrying, Lloyd announced that Davis would not appear in any more motion pictures. Her last films were the drama Temporary Marriage (Lambert Hillyer, 1923) starring Kenneth Harlan, Mildred Davis, and Myrtle Stedman, and the comedy Condemned (Arthur Rosson, 1923) starring Davis and Carl Miller. After much persuasion by Davis (and much grief) she received Lloyd's consent to return to the screen in the comedy Too Many Crooks (Fred C. Newmeyer, 1927) with Lloyd Hughes and George Bancroft. Lloyd produced the film through his production company. It was the only acting role she undertook after becoming married. Throughout her married life, a close friend (and Harold's secretary) Roy Brooks lived with the Lloyds at Greenacres and kept Mildred company when Harold was not at home. In her later life, she suffered from depression and serious (though short-lived) drinking spells. Mildred Davis died in 1969 in St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica, California. Mildred Davis and Lloyd remained married until her death and had three children: Harold Lloyd Jr. (1931-1971), Gloria Lloyd Roberts (1924-2012) and their adopted daughter Marjorie Elisabeth Lloyd (1925-1986).

Some of Holloway's 900 series TEs have been pinched recently as buses were needed to kick off the route 34 tender win at Potters Bar. As a result, some former First examples were plucked out of storage and sent to HT to make up the shortfall, being route bound to the 91, expected to be for around eight weeks. George and I had this one, TE1746, to Caledonian Road two Saturdays running, it evaded getting photographed last week but I managed a snap shot today, 6/12/14. This one spent it's first 5 years or so at Greenford, where it began life as First DN33606. Following the loss of route E1 and E3 many of this batch have been parked up pending being found new work, though this one did actually get some use at Greenford (and seemingly Hayes) during July and August.

The wasp was in the house so I used our go to method of capture and release: a plastic cup with a piece of cardboard covering the top. After it posed for a few pictures I took it outside and released it.

I'm still working on my new pedalboard so I had to throw a makeshift rig together for last nights show.

The orange pedal is the Dr. Balls custom booster, my current fave.... dirty and nasty, perfect! The blue box is a Dr. Balls Klon Centaur clone, Fulltone OCD v1.4, Dr. Balls Aqua Puss clone. On top we have the Burriss Vib+ which powers the whole pedalboard as well as switches on and off the on board tremolo in the amp. Next to that is the Korg Pitchblack tuner.
